What Exactly Is A Ghost?

Posted on Jun 30, 2008 at 03:10 PM by Nigel Nix | Comments (0)

It doesn't matter what part of the world you come from or what religious faith you belong to, people all over the world are fascinated with death and the possibility of an afterlife. Most live in hope of "something" after this life. Some claim to have seen such entities or have photographic proof of their existence. More often than not these specters have evil inclinations and create fear at a primeval level. But what exactly is a ghost?

Is it the residual energy left in a certain location or a recurring echo doomed to rerun its own show for eternity? Is it a hellish demon masquerading as a mortal casualty? Or is it simply a lost soul abruptly taken and trying to find an exit without realizing its own tragic fate? Whatever ghosts are they remain a fascination and continue to captivate us in our everyday life, in books, through orally related tales and on the silver screen.

So when exactly did the deceased take on such a macabre persona? In order to evade further rhetoric we must look into our ancient past. Imagine being one of the first people in existence. Frolicking in nature and never taking notice of lifelessness even when killing other beasts to feed your hungry body. Taking your continuing existence for granted. Breeding, loving and raising your own offspring. Suddenly something unthinkable happens. One of your favorite offspring is killed by one of the beasts you regularly dine upon. Dystopian heart tearing sadness fills your being. A dark empty void is left where an integral warm piece used to reside. Unwilling to let go, you continue to speak with the memories to your cherished one. Continue to wish that they would return and that things could be as they were before this constant sorrow. You want it so strong that you start to believe it possible and eventually you make it a reality.

Through the use of hallucinogens shamans believed they could speak with the dead and summon powers beyond this earthly realm. The common folk thirsted for such hope and these elemental sorcerers commanded both fear and respect from their simple followers. They were a necessary comfort and aided in creating a stable content society. Believing in a hereafter gives purpose to an otherwise pointless and trivial life journey. In these times our expired relatives were looked upon with tremendous awe and great respect.

During the subsequent ages ghosts have become more imaginatively sinister through the writings of great story tellers and spectacular Hollywood productions. But despite these distortions, no solid proof of an afterlife kingdom or its evil inhabitants has yet been proven. It continues to be a long and intensely studied topic but has failed to produce hardcore proof. Ectoplasm itself eludes the eager professor of parapsychology hoping to find a shred of real evidence to justify his folly. However motivated these nocturnal thrill seekers remain, it seems that nature stubbornly denies them the fruit they so badly desire. Ghosts, I'm afraid, as spooky as they have been portrayed, remain an object of our ever fascinated and overactive imaginations.

What is Twitter and How to Use Twitter

Posted on Jan 25, 2008 at 06:37 PM by Nathalie Lussier

These days the internet is taking on a life of its own with new social networking sites popping up left and right. The social networking framework that I am going to discuss today may not be new, but it is definitely spreading its wings and ready to fly. You might say it is twittering past some of its competition!

Are You Feeling Groovy?

Posted on Dec 23, 2007 at 03:25 AM by Nigel Nix | Comments (0)

Life in our modern world can be extremely stressful and soul destroying. Economic inflation makes life difficult for the average person; privatization of companies distances the employees from their invisible shareholders and the speed at which we have to process information has grown enormously in comparison to the snail passed communication forms of our forefathers. And these are only the crumbs of the giant cookie constantly pecking at the withering nerve ends of an already disillusioned populace.

The bombardment of marketing campaigns encouraging us to express our individuality through mass produced products further isolates us from each other. The friendly smile of the local grocer has been replaced by the sickening grimace of the homogenized plastic packed multinational giants. Fear has become the power tool used to inhibit social revolution. Fear of being too fat or not getting enough vitamins. Fear of being alone or fear of losing ones possessions. Decisions have to be quick if one is to avoid being swept away with yesterday's popularity.

News decays rapidly and must be constantly replaced with newer news to keep us on our toes. What was crucially important an hour ago has lost all relevance. We are not allowed to digest this meal before being force fed the latest episode of an ever changing chaotic buffet.

Advertising billboards change like a deck of shuffling playing cards further adding to the confusion. Printed media splurges out headlines at an atomic rate and our children are like obese zombified cyborgs springing from internet to mobile phone to ipod. Basic survival skills such as cooking or woodwork are no longer of interest to our youth. Teen role models take drugs, escape justice and make fortunes selling their stories to sleazy tabloids. Hardly surprising, when they see their parents slave for a minimal wage and retire as withered wrecks.

Our living planet has become a dying cancerous hollowed hole as we observe powerless against the wealthy corporate machine of destruction. Indifference protects us from hellish guilt and ego justifies our pretend wannabe lifestyles. Creating diversions can lead to a false sense of security but real hope and constructive peaceful objection on a mass scale is the only thing that will lead to change.

Hope and appreciation of what we really have can bring true inner peace. Change of perspective from achieving media manipulated desires to appreciating our loved ones is a giant step towards change. Like the humble butterfly we must flap our small wings and create a powerful tsunami of events to occur. Nothing comes of nothing. Giving up through despair is not the answer.

There is always a solution.

Nature is living proof of this.

Our misguided knowledge that we control the Earth and can buy security is naïve. Our universe has existed long before us and will continue to exist with or without us. It is NEVER too late to change and sharing something positive or trusting each other can open our lives to new hope and regeneration. Say hello to a stranger or smile at someone you don't know. We create our own barriers but maybe it's time to start breaking them down. You WILL be astounded at the responses you will receive.

People are good.

All children are LOVE.

It's society that makes some of them into monsters. Let's unlearn the bad habits used to control us and start to reverse the wave of destruction caused by the wrong turn we took as a civilization.

Of Conventional Children And Unconditional Love

I think it was meant to be one of those funny or smart-alecky emails about kids. It was entitled “Consider Yourself Lucky.” In the text, it said something like “Repeat after me, I will not complain about my kids,” repeated about half a page.

This was followed by half a dozen photographs of teens or young adults with extreme tattoos, piercings and body and face modifications. In the last picture, the kid had a face only his mother could love (assuming she could recognize him in the first place) because his head was completely covered with tattoos, piercings, face modification and hair coloring.

Humour and is your life full?

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson went on a camping trip. In the middle of the night Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.”

Watson looked up at the night’s sky, and a vista of God’s creation was spread out before him.
