Stone is becoming a much more popular material for sinks, and soapstone is in the lead, although granite and others are still common. These solid sinks feel warm and soft, and have few seams. They're easy to clean, and have a comfortable, pleasant mass to them. There are two basic types of soapstone sink: carved and assembled. The latter type are made of pieces of soapstone attached together to create a basin, and are the most traditional. They're less expensive than a carved soapstone sink, and offer plenty of space. However, if the sealant of their seams deteriorates, assembled soapstone sinks may leak, or dirt may be trapped.
A carved soapstone sink is a single piece of stone, out of which a basin has been hollowed. It has no seams, and can be made in the more common rounded shape. That means that there are no corners to trap dirt, and no seams to leak. However, you can expect to pay twice as much for a sink hollowed out of one piece of soapstone as you will for one with slab construction. Assembled sinks that are well made and maintained are unlikely to leak, and are the better choice if you're cost conscious. If looks and convenience matter more, however, you may wish to choose a solid sink.
Soapstone sinks may be used as they are, or an oil finish may be applied. Oil finishes may slightly increase the stone's resistance to staining. They'll also make the colors of your soapstone sink much richer and deeper. However, many people prefer the look of natural soapstone. While the stone may stain, it's important to remember that this is a surface problem only. Any stain, or even an oil finish, can be sanded off, returning the sink to its original finish.
Because soapstone sinks aren't produced in the same kind of quantities that stainless steel or fiberglass ones are, you'll easily be able to get a custom piece if one is needed. You can find soapstone kitchen sinks in just about every style, from one or two basin traditional sinks to rounded bowls, ovals, and even triangles. That means that sinks can be made for unusual corners or kitchens that are hard to find a good sink for. If you've been considering remodeling your kitchen, think about adding a soapstone sink. It can add a natural beauty to your kitchen that you just can't find in any other material.
