When people mention chandeliers, a lot of us think of elaborate, royal confections made of crystal. While there are plenty of those chandeliers around, you can also get less expensive, slightly less showy chandeliers for your own home. There are metal chandeliers, resin ones, and of course, the traditional crystal chandelier. They can not only be found in their conventional tones, but you can also get colored chandeliers. These can help give your home a feeling of class and elegance, plus a little bit of individuality. However, not all colored chandeliers are good ones, and not all chandeliers are right for every home. Here's some information about the different options available, and how they're best used.
Look For Good Crystal
If you decide to get a colored crystal chandelier (the most common type of colored chandelier), you should make sure that you get one that's made of quality crystal. There are lots of different varieties available. The category of "crystal" is a pretty broad one, so many materials get lumped under that heading. Look for crystals that are whole and smooth. If you see cracks, inconsistent color, imperfections, or even bubbles, pass on that chandelier. It won't live up to the pressures that a chandelier needs to withstand and still look attractive in the light.
Bubbles and flaws can deflect the light and destroy the sparkle. If you do decide to get a chandelier that has flaws (perhaps it's a good deal), hang it carefully. You may be able to hide the flaws by careful positioning. The crystals that have flaws are likely not to give you the same amount of dazzle that the clear ones can. That can mean a less impressive display.
Colored Crystals Look Modern
Chandeliers with colored crystal allow you to have a traditional chandelier with a little something different, too. They don't have to be cheap, novelty pieces, either. A few of the top chandelier makers have recently released new colored designs. That means you can get a great fixture, even if it's not the most traditional. However, a color chandelier isn't for everyone, or for every house. You should choose carefully to make sure that your home looks its best.
Colored chandelier designs vary between the subtle and the sensational. For a home that has a bold color scheme, a more vibrant color choice might work. However, you should remember to make sure that you match your chandelier with the existing architecture, and take changing tastes into account. You don't want to change your decorating scheme and be faced with having an out of fashion chandelier or buying a new one every time styles shift.
