Christmas isn't Christmas unless you have some cookies baking in the oven. Some of my favorite Christmas cookies are the ones you decorate just prior to putting in the oven.

Following are some tips for the kinds of things you can add to your Christmas cookies before you bake them.

The key is to find decorative touches that withstand the heat of baking. For good results every time try:

*Colored sugars

*Natural sugars like pearl sugar

*Sprinkles like Jimmies, non-pareils, silver and gold dragées.

*Dried fruits like cranberries and raisins

*Nuts

All of the above items can be placed on top of almost any cookie to dress them up a bit and give it a more festive look.

You may even what to paint yourself a dozen or so one-of-kind Christmas cookies.

The technique of painting cookies is also done before baking.

An edible food paint is easily made out of an egg yolk mixed with a few drops of food coloring. Paint your cookies using a clean paintbrush. The paint will dry during the baking process and will result in colorful, glazed Christmas cookies. This is an awesome holiday baking activity to do with kids!
