Posted on Jan 19, 2009 at 03:47 AM by Christopher Smith | Comments (0)

Business fires are very destructive not only to the facility and its owner, but also to employees, customers, and families. They cause loss of property, loss of jobs, loss of livelihood, and even loss of life. Although a building can always be rebuilt, sometimes there is too much emotional trauma and scarring to allow the owner to do so. Most of these problems could have been minimized, if only there had been an alarm system to alert the fire department sooner.

Moving Supplies On a Budget

Posted on Mar 14, 2008 at 09:32 AM by Connie Nicole | Comments (0)

One item that often gets neglected when moving is the purchase of supplies. You'll need boxes, of course, but there are plenty of other items that can make your move easier. Many people neglect to buy them. For instance, some helpful moving supplies include room labels for boxes, permanent markers, plastic bags and garbage bags, plastic wrap, packing materials and heavy duty tape. However, moving supplies can be expensive. If you're trying to make a move on the cheap, here's how to get all your moving supplies on a budget.

The first step is to plan your move in advance. You'll need to decide what your budget is and try as hard as you can to stick to it. This means tracking the cost of your new space, parking, utilities, moving truck or services, and your moving supplies. Room labels , tape, boxes and other supplies might not seem like they cost much in comparison to other items, but they add up over time, especially if you have a lot to move. Once you've made your budget, you'll have to stick with it, but you should be reasonable. Don't assume you'll be able to get everything for free.

That said, there are plenty of supplies that you can get cheaply or free. Boxes, for instance, can be found at local stores on the day they get their shipments. Produce boxes from grocery stores are popular, as are small furniture and electronics boxes from discount stores and other retailers. Ask politely, and don't be pushy if the manager turns you down or tells you to come back on another day. Different stores have different policies about giving out their boxes. Most crush and recycle cardboard, so it's actually an inconvenience to give them to you. However, if you're friendly and polite, you'll be surprised at the results.

Christmas comes but once a year, which can be a good thing if you are the one doing all the work. Despite demanding work schedules and economic pressures, many parents still feel the need to do it all. Women in particular will run ourselves ragged creating the perfect Christmas. Unfortunately though, our good intentions often just add to our stress load.

So how can you avoid festive overload yet bring alive the best part of your holiday vision? First and foremost, you need to slow down. It is only when we step back and look at all we have added to our already full plates that we can really see the path of destruction we have created for ourselves.

Throw away your many to-do lists and focus on your family. Re-connect. Lead by example; show your family how to turn the volume down and the meaning up. Easier said than done, right?

How to speed through your Christmas card list

Sending traditional Christmas cards can be a time consuming process but it doesn't have to be if you implement a few good organizing tips.

One of the best ways I've found to save time on addressing my Christmas cards has been to reduce my list. And for those few I do send out, I address the envelopes first then write the cards to go in them. I work straight through my address book from A to Z. It's much quicker than looking up each address separately.

Get organized now - 10 tips for making the most of your Christmas shopping experience

Posted on Nov 15, 2007 at 07:43 AM by Sherrie Le Masurier | Comments (0)

In a recent post, I shared with you the importance of having a plan before you hit the malls to do your Christmas shopping. Today I'm offering up 10 more tips on how to get the most out of your Christmas shopping experience.

Devise A Shopping Strategy
Consult your phone book for a directory of the mall stores so you can plan your strategy in advance. Knowing the stores ahead of time may inspire some gift ideas. You might even want to place a call to find out about services such as gift wrapping, lockers, stroller rentals (only if you can't find a sitter) and whether or not there is a coat check.

Avoid Heavy Outerwear
Coat storage is a biggie - it is vitally important not to get overheated in your pursuit to find just the right gifts. Ditch the winter jacket and wear only a sweater. No coat check? Leave your winter coat at home so you won't get overloaded carrying all your packages and your coat.

Wear Supportive Footwear
Supportive cushioned walking shoes or cross-trainers are best.

When it comes to planning for the holidays one of the best ways is to create a plan.

There is lot to be said about having a plan.

The key to enjoying your holidays is to plan ahead. Every year I use the same countdown checklist to stay on top of things.

The following checklist will count you down from now to the week before Christmas.

Four Weeks Ahead

*Get a spiral notebook and make a master list of gifts to buy, foods to bake, events to attend and errands to run.

*Draft a schedule that includes all the tasks you have to complete, how long you think each will take and when each needs to be done. Write everything on a calendar and hang it on the refrigerator door.
