Most of the concrete areas in your home will benefit from waterproofing. By treating a concrete deck, porch, patio, or driveway, you can make them last longer and stay looking nicer. Leaky, wet basements are another problem for many homeowners. Even if you've had a professional in to find leaky spots in your walls, you may still want to waterproof the floor yourself. Any concrete area that experiences a lot of exposure to water can be preserved using waterproofing. Without it, you may eventually face some good-sized repair bills.

Most new homes today are waterproofed during construction. Contractors realize that taking this preventive measure early on will save the homeowner a lot of money and hassle later. Any area of concrete that isn't treated can develop cracks and leaks as the house settles. If your cracks go untreated, you can end up with a whole lot of water damage. Don't ever let a contractor tell you that you don't need waterproofing!

While lower-priced cleaners don't have the power and temperatures that can generate very dry steam, the vapor cleaner is hot enough to dry the steam so that only about 5% of the water remains in it. Dryer steam means that whatever you clean won't end up wet and need to be dried for an extended period.

Laundry Room Storage Ideas

Posted on May 16, 2008 at 08:24 PM by Rob Bernabe | Comments (0)

Often garages, empty spaces or basements have been used as laundry areas; however in order to make this washing chore more pleasant and efficient, you need to have a laundry room storage by making the best use of your floor space. Many homeowners now prefer having their laundry rooms located near the kitchen or near the bedrooms. By smart planning, the laundry room can be easily be transformed from a cluttered utility space to an attractive spot. For those homes that have space constraints, people can opt for stacked washer or dryer that can be easily placed anywhere, for instance, it can be placed in the bathroom or a closet, or even a pantry.

The storage of items which are functional, like the washing machine, ironing station, clothing dryer, and the sink area needs to be planned efficiently. Both, the washing machine and the clothes dryers require venting. A laundry tub will make clothes soaking easier even though it requires plumbing. The laundry room storage should have adequate lighting. Another way of enhancing the outlook of laundry room is installing shelves near the dryer or washer for storing detergent and other materials required for washing so that these materials are easily accessible.

No Fire, But Why Is The Smoke Alarm Beeping?

Posted on May 14, 2008 at 06:43 PM by Christopher Smith | Comments (0)

We'd always heard how great it was having a new house, so when we finally got ours, we expected big things. Unfortunately we had no choice but to move in even though there was a lot of work not done. We had no air conditioning in the August heat, no running water, and our only potty was at the gas station down the road. We were hot, exhausted, and grouchy.

So what does this story have to do with a beeping smoke alarm? Everything, as you will soon see. We worked through the days only to throw our sweaty bodies in bed each night. The only bed we'd been able to dig from the pile in our garage was full-sized and nothing like the king we were used to, but at least we had a bed.

In recent years, ventless gas fireplaces have emerged as a popular choice among many when it comes to providing heat to a room. Unfortunately, though these units are productive when it comes to heating a room, there is some controversy regarding the units. This controversy mostly stems from the fact that these are viewed by many as a safety hazard.

These ventless gas fireplaces do not require the standard chimney or any other type of duct that is external for venting. These units use natural gas to operate, and some may use propane. The air contained within the room is what it is used to burn off the gas or propone in order to provide heat to the room. Due to this fact, they are often referred to as "ventless gas heaters". Ventless gas fireplaces are typically much less expensive than standard fireplaces when it comes to installation. Continue reading "Introducing Ventless Gas Fireplaces"

Are Dry Carpet Cleaners Really Effective?

Posted on Apr 14, 2008 at 02:14 PM by Christopher Smith | Comments (0)

There are a lot of ways to clean a carpet, but how do you choose the best method to use? Historically there were several options available such as hiring a professional cleaning service, renting a carpet cleaner and doing yourself, or actually buying your own carpet cleaning machine. A relatively new method that is now on the market is dry carpet cleaning.

Dry carpet cleaning is exactly what it says. There may be no liquids used at all, which includes water. This cuts out the risks of using wet-clean methods and shortens the drying time after having the carpets cleaned. It's no wonder that people are choosing this dry method over the messy wet ones. It works especially well when cleaning delicate or expensive rugs and carpets, too.

Tips For Replacing your Bathtub Drain

Posted on Apr 8, 2008 at 08:02 AM by Christopher Smith | Comments (0)

Bathtub drains occasionally need to be replaced, and drains with the built in stoppers are the ones that usually have problems. These will with time become harder to use and will slowly allow water to leak while the tub is supposed to be plugged, as well as hold water when they are supposed to drain. These are the reasons that you cannot properly rinse off your ankles in the shower in many cases. In time your bathtub drain stopper mechanism will need to be repaired or replaced. This is actually a minor repair that most do-it-yourselfers are willing and able to tackle. You will need to have on hand some plumber's putty, channel locks (or other wrench), a Philips screwdriver, and the replacement part for the bathtub drain you are replacing as well as a few cleaning rags.

Start by removing the old bathtub drain plug mechanism. This has a face plate in the tub which has two screws attaching it to the tub. Once you remove the cover plate you will gain access to the rest of the assembly. Simply grasp it and remove through the hole it was installed in.

Home floor cleaning is probably on your mind if you've recently moved into a new home with hardwood floors, or renovated your existing home's floors. Unlike carpeting, which is simple to clean and maintain, hardwood floors do require a bit more care. Fortunately, once you learn how to properly maintain your hardwood floors you will be able to look forward to years of easy care with stunning results.

The first thing you will need to do before cleaning is to figure out what kind of floor you have. If you are lucky to have a new sealed floor, it is probably a surface sealed floor which requires relatively little care. If your floor is older, it is probably a penetrating seal treated floor. This type of floor needs more involved care with waxes and oils.

First you need to choose a design. For inspiration you can use Christmas cards, coloring books, or your memory. Once you have your design in mind you need to put it on a large piece of paper so that it is the size you want it to be when it is displayed on your window. Newspaper end rolls or butcher paper works well for this. Outline the design on the paper, you do not need to color it.

LED Exit Lights, Showing you the way out

Posted on Dec 13, 2007 at 01:22 PM by Daryl Plaza | Comments (0)

We can now find LED exit lights at ever exit sign. For a long time, regular incandescent light bulbs were used; meaning they required bulky batteries to last for enough time, and even so, they would quickly fade off with aging batteries and go out at times as these incandescent light bulbs wouldn't last as long as the LED lights will. It was very common that, whenever you needed those exit lights the most, they would be so dim - or even completely discharged - they would not help anyone. This is where the LED exit lights have become the new way to show an emergency exit and not worry about burning out and have to check on it regularly as you did before.

Top Ten Car Buying Tips

Posted on Nov 18, 2007 at 09:34 PM by Neil Teasdale | Comments (0)

The first thing that you should know when you want to buy a new car is that both you and the dealer are looking to get the better end of the deal. If you don't learn anything else from this you will learn how to walk away from your next car deal with both sides being satisfied. A good deal is a win, win situation for both parties. Most of the time, it's the buyer that leaves unsatisfied and the dealer counting their profits.

In this day and age a car is no longer a luxury, but a necessity with our fast paced life and growing families. You will likely have to purchase a new car more than once in your life, for you or a loved one so you might as well learn to do it in a way that will make buying the cars less painful.

If you are looking to buy a car you should begin with these 10 basic car buying tips.

1. You should purchase your new car at or around Christmas time because with everybody focused on their Christmas presents, there aren't many people with neither the time nor the money to worry about looking to buy a new car, and it forces dealerships to get creative with their sales strategies. Salesmen and dealerships are more willing to haggle down to your prices to close the deal when customers are few and far between.

2. You can also usually score a good deal from July to October because that is the time of year when dealerships are trying to unload most of their inventory to make way for the new models coming in.

3. Purchasing a car online is becoming a great way to get a new car. Although some are still sKeptical, others are reaping the benefit on the deals that some dealerships are offering. Just wait for good rebates and incentives online and shop around. Print out your information from the best quotes, get two or three online quotes for free and bring it to the dealer that you are most willing to work with. Bringing in lower quotes from another company might be your best bet in getting a good deal. Most dealers will match that price or beat it by a slight percentage, either way you get what you want.

4. You should visit various online car purchase sites to find new car prices, dealer incentives, and the best rebate offers. There are a lot of options out there that can be used to your benefit.

5. It's a great idea when going into a dealership to bring a copy of your personal credit score with you. I can't express enough how much this will help, especially with all the credit scams some dealers play. A good credit score can actually lower your interest rates on your car loan. Your car dealer should not know more about you than you do.

6. Keep an ear out to avoid a common scam that dealerships pull. We often hear that they will tell customers that the financing fell through and that you have to respond by paying more money on your loan. This should give you more incentive to bring your own credit score from a trusted provider.

7. Another common scam used by dealership salesmen is for them to tell you that they have found you a lower rate, but that they want you to re-sign your loan papers. Usually, that is a downright lie. Once they pull up your financing information, they have the upper hand if you don't know the details about your credit information. Can you start to see why we encourage you to understand your personal credit information?

Get Your Equifax.com Credit Report Now! It will cost around $10-$15. It's better to pay $15 now than thousands later. You can also get your free credit score and more from FreeCreditReport.com.

8. Don't bother bringing in a car for trade in if you still owe money on it. The dealership rarely pays the rest of the loan on time which will result in you having to pay a great deal of late fees to the bank. If you do decide to bring a car in that you owe money on, get it in writing from the dealership that they will pay the balance on the car within 10 days.

9. Sometimes a dealership may not have all of your options and must order the car directly from the dealership. When this happens they will often ask you to pay $500-$1000 for a deposit on the car. They don't like ordering special options if they don't have a buyer handy. Try not to pay more than $500 and be sure to pay with a credit card because sometimes the dealership will tell you that there was a price increase on the vehicle and will want more money. If you pay with a credit card you have room to dispute the amount being taken from you. If you pay by check, you can just consider the money gone.

10. You should never buy a car when you are in desperate need for one because a dealer will see that and take advantage.

You should never wait until an old car is dead before searching for a new one because you should give yourself time to shop around for one and get the best deal possible. Desperation often clouds your judgment and will cost you more than you were willing to pay on your new car.

Knowing these tips when shopping for a new car online or offline will help you make a deal that you'll be happy with.

Car Buying Extras Can Suck You Dry

Posted on Nov 18, 2007 at 09:31 PM by Neil Teasdale | Comments (0)

It's amazing how many people get ripped off after they have already closed the deal. You have the car you want, you got the price you're happy with and then it happens. They get you on the extras and the warranties at that point and they can actually suck another $1000 to $4000 cash or another $100 to $200 a month.

The extras are things like rust proofing, scotch guarding etc. It seems pretty straight forward but you would be surprised at how many people get taken on these. What's really amazing is that you get scammed on a car and say, "that's not going to happen again!" Then 3 years later, Bam, what the f...... just happened???

The trickiest closing cost scam is the extended warranty because the language used is so confusing. This is not even the warranty that the factory gives you for the car. It is a warranty that covers the cost of fixing the car should it break down on you. To get around this, you have to know the dealer's language and you should really get this part down. Now although extended warranties often do cover any repairs that you require during your coverage period, there is often some information that you are not told about.

For example, the extended warranty is usually effective only up to a certain amount of mileage or term period; whichever happens first. Make sure you have all the details on the terms if you decide to take on the extra auto coverage. The warranty might also only cover certain types of problems. If your extended warranty doesn't cover every part of your car, why bother? It will cost you so make sure it's worth it for you.

Some extended warranties don't cover the larger engine problems or certain power train issues, but just cover the smaller issues. If your engine conks out, you may be left in the lurch. Don't even bother considering buying an extended warranty if you are only leasing the car for a small time period like 36 months. Perhaps it is better only for longer periods of leasing like 60 months.

Many extended warranties don't cover everyday wear and tear policies, only breakdown problems. If you do insist on getting an extended warranty, get one that covers you for both occurrences. You will only really want to get a warranty on a more dependable car like a Lexus, Honda, or Toyota because extended warranties rarely cover the costs incurred in cars that are closer to the present time of purchase. You will also want to get a warranty that is effective immediately. You will also want to get a warranty with a well established finance company and not one that go belly up in a year.

Don't purchase an extended warranty directly from the dealer. Instead look at sites on www.LendingTree.com for an online warranty because being online gives you all the time to asses your warranty properly. Keep a close eye out for your deductibles because you don't want to get stuck paying for deductibles that you thought were covered by the warranty.

The following chart shows some of the extras that dealers try to get you on at closing. This can be very irritating how they try to weasel even more money out of you in the end on stuff that you really don't need at all. I mean, you already paid a chunk of hard earned cash, but they see it as, what's another $2000 or $3000?

Of course, when you hear them explain the extras, they will all sound like you need them NOW. It's bad enough that they will throw them up at you but look at this table to show how much they are really ripping you off by.

Most Common Extras at Closing

Description
Rust proofing - Your price $800 - Dealers costs $40
Extended warranty - Your price $1200 - Dealers costs $300
Scotch guard - Your price $300 - Dealers costs $5
Car alarm - Your price $400 - Dealers costs $100
Paint sealant - Your price $300 - Dealers costs $10
Credit/insurance costs - Your price $200 - Dealers costs $30
Detailing and pin striping - Your price $299 - Dealers costs $30
Total of extras - Your price $3499 - Dealers costs $515
Extra monthly payment - Your price $97 - Dealers costs $0

As you can see, these extras when buying a car will get you in the end. If you can, you should avoid them all together.

They are worth far more to the dealer than they are to you. Understand what you want and/or need and stick to your guns.

How To Avoid These 5 Car Dealership Scams

Posted on Nov 18, 2007 at 09:28 PM by Neil Teasdale | Comments (0)

When you're going in for your next car purchase keep your eyes peeled for the following scams.

1. The VIN# window etching scam - Some dealers will charge you $300-$900 for window VIN# etching and tell you that you have to pay the money to get the loan because the bank insists on it. Don't go for it.

Some dealers might tell you that the etching is free but will add on the etch money to your monthly payments to make up for it. Anytime a dealer says something is free, get it in writing and check your monthly fee. The best way to avoid this scam is to force the dealer to put it in writing if they say that the etching is free or simply etch the car yourself.

You can get an etch-it-yourself kit from http://www.CarEtch.com for $30 or just don't buy the car. Remember a lender doesn't require that you purchase any extras on a car. All the lender cares about is that you can make your regular payments on time.

2. The Financing Scam - You trade in your old car in and the finance manager signs you up at the agreed interest rate and gives you the car. After a week or two passes and he/she calls saying that you didn't qualify for the interest rates that they gave you when the deal was made.

Every new purchase has a clause in the contract that usually states that the deal is "subject to loan approval." This gives the finance manager an opening to get more money out of you. All that this clause means in the contract is that the deal is not finished yet even if you already have possession of the car and have signed the contract. The dealer can then charge you $1000 more in finance fees and up your monthly payments by $50. This scam is generally pulled on people with bad credit because it is more believable.

You can avoid this scam by not financing the car with the dealer if you know that you have bad credit. You are better off going to a credit union and financing the car yourself. When you buy a new car the deal should be made on the price of the car, not on the monthly payments.

3. The Credit Score Scam - This is desperation in action. This is when the finance manager tells you that your credit score is lower than it really is so that they can get you for higher interest rates. This scam is pulled on everyone; good or bad credit. This scam is easy to avoid. Just get your own copy of your credit report from Equifax.com, and bring it with you.

It's pretty hard to lie to you about your credit score if you have your own copy of it. If your paper and theirs doesn't say the same thing, you might want to shop elsewhere because that dealership is sleazy. Don't hesitate to let them know it too because it'll be nice to watch them try to back out of that one.

4. The Forced Warranty Scam - This is when the finance manager tells you that you are not eligible for the loan by the bank unless you pay an extra $2000 for a 2-3 year extended warranty. It's hard to believe they even try this. Why would the bank trust you to pay a $22,000 loan for the car, but they will not trust you to pay for a $20,000 loan?? That's just insane.

You can avoid this scam by forcing them to put it in writing that you "have" to pay the extended warranty in order to get the loan. Just let them know you'd like to check with the contract your local State's Attorney's office for validity and they'll drop the extended warranty in a heartbeat.

5. The Dealer Preparation Scam - Unfortunately, this is legal and very much common practice. I still refer to it as a scam because it is just another way to get more money from you for nothing. The dealer will tell you that you have to pay an extra $500 to cover the labor costs of the dealership's 5-point inspection.

This alleged check up that you are paying so much money for, is for the dealership to remove plastic from the seats, vacuum the car, maybe, and make sure all of the fuses and fluids are ready to go. When factories deliver the new cars to the dealerships the cost of delivery and preparation is already covered, so basically you are paying the dealership for work that they haven't really done.

You can avoid this scam by simply asking the dealership to add an extra $500 credit to the deal to make sure you do not have to pay the money. If they refuse, the choice is yours. If you think it's fine buy the car, if not; try another dealer that will remove the dealer preparation costs.

If you can avoid these 5 car dealership scams when buying your next new car, you'll be way ahead of the game.

Car Loan Tips Every Car Buyer Must Know

Posted on Nov 18, 2007 at 09:26 PM by Neil Teasdale | Comments (0)

If you really want or need a new car, but you don't have the capital up front you can consider taking out a loan especially for the purchase of your car. I've talked to many people who have always paid up front or have kept their car until it falls apart because they either didn't want to have to pay for something that would depreciate so fast or they thought they didn't qualify to get a loan. There's a good chance that paying the monthly rate might be cheaper than continually fixing up the old heap.

There are so many different financial companies that specialize in issuing loans specifically for the purchase of automobiles. Even more conveniently, they're all pretty well setup online for easy access. This is a blessing in disguise, fleeting are the days when you had to go to the nearest bank and get denied or take on a heavy payment due to the lack of options. With online loans you have the option to really shop around and be much more confident that you're not getting "taken to the cleaners" on the first stop.

Often, this type of loan for the purchase of a car is known as an "unsecured car loan" and you can search for specialist companies online that provide them. A good car loan company should be able to give you an instant free quote, and many of these companies will provide between 90% to 100% of the purchase value of the car.

Typically the car loan is repaid over a period of three to eight years - five being the most popular. What's particularly interesting is that even people with poor credit, bankruptcy or CCJ (County Court Judgment) are eligible to take out an unsecured car loan. Now going into debt is never a good thing but if you need a car and have to go the loan route then always work within your means.

Understanding what your credit situation before starting your quest for a new car loan, is very important. You should seriously get your credit check done to ensure you know going in what issues you have if any. As stated earlier an Equifax Credit Report will cost about $15 but is well worth it. You can also try FreeCreditReport.com, but either way it's a small price to pay to ensure you know where you stand, especially if you're planning on going car and loan shopping in person.

As always, it's good to visit as many car loan online websites as you can - many online websites will offer you a free quote for your car loan, and it's a good idea to get as many of these as you can prior to making a final choice. Try to get at least 3 and even 4 quotes to compare and ensure you're getting the best deal out there. Getting quotes usually only takes a few minutes to fill out a form but doesn't cost a dime, so take advantage of them. The worst thing when buying anything on impulse is seeing it cheaper right after you've paid.

Is Online Car Buying Right For You?

Posted on Nov 18, 2007 at 09:24 PM by Neil Teasdale | Comments (0)

Is it time for a new car? Depending on where you're located, it may be possible for you to save a substantial amount of time and money by researching and buying your new car online. Buying cars online is becoming just as normal as buying household items online. The internet is truly expanding to make it easier and cheaper for dealers to sell and buyers to buy.

Dealers love the concept; they get more visitors than the average walk in neighborhood dealership and don't necessarily have 8 car sales people sitting around reading the paper. Their overhead drops significantly while the sales and profits soar through the roof. Consumers are starting to get more comfortable with it because a high percentage of car shoppers hate the car dealership experience. But online they can get the answers many of us are afraid to ask when we're sitting in front of a pushy car salesman.

In some countries such as the United Kingdom, an increasing number of people are choosing to cut out shady dealerships and buy their new auto on the internet. Now you have the luxury to shop online and take your time understanding what vehicle and what price you want. As long as you choose a reputable source, it's possible to save a substantial chunk of money by purchasing your new car online.

Remember, when you buy online you cannot test out the car you're interested in..so only choose to buy online once you've driven the car (try it out at a dealership first). Even when buying online you should still do your homework and know the car you're getting and the price it's worth. Learn about the car you like before a dealer decides what they want you to buy, which is the car that makes them more commission, keep the ball in your court.

Use price guides such as Edmunds or Kelley Blue Book to find out the true value of the car you're buying. This will make sure you're not paying more then normal prices for your new or used car. A little homework will give you some confidence and most probably save you some cash.

Many online sites for car purchases work by local dealers offering you free price quotes (these can often be negotiated downwards). These sites are growing larger by the month and are being considered more and more by consumers in North America. Popular sites like Auto Trader which we took as a manual search from their catalogues at the store are now really building their online presence. Other sites like CarsDirect.com, CarMax.com and CarPrice.com are also starting to see sales rise.

Some sites will even offer a lowest price guarantee - so if you do find the car for less, they'll match the price. Additionally, some online car buying sites will even drive the car directly to your home. If you're in the market for a new car and really don't like the whole dealership experience, this just might be what you're looking for.

Serious ease and convenience not to mention you can save thousands of dollars this way. But best of all, no hard sell.

Wall Mounted Water Fountains - Bring Life to Your Place

Posted on Oct 22, 2007 at 06:42 PM by Rob Bernabe | Comments (0)

Life is much more than about food, drink, sleep, work and sex. It is about beauty, about feelings, about sensibility, about giving the proper food to your mind and soul. Art has a major role in this, and making an art from how you arrange your place, no matter if at home or work, can give us lot of satisfaction.

One good idea about arranging your place is making use of wall mounted water fountains. Is known that water brings to most of us a state of peace and relaxation, and since we cannot always be in nature, we try to bring parts of it at home. I always loved the sound of running water, its reflections.

Wall mounted water fountains can fulfill well that need, with little cost and not taking much space. Excepting the space advantage, is also the cost aspect, since they are less expensive that big ones for the center. But what I like most at them is that the visual sensation they give can be very well enhanced by light effects arranged on the same wall.

This construction method uses standard stick-framed walls, while placing a veneer layer of brick over the outside walls. This results in quicker (and cheaper) construction, while still giving the appearance of a full brick house. Thousands of Americans suffer from illnesses and injuries every year that would require them to use a wheelchair. How much impact does this have on society? If you happen to be a loved one of one of those who has to use a wheelchair, you may have to perform some wheelchair accessible construction at home to make it easier for them to move around.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires public accommodations to meet certain standards so as not to discriminate against the handicapped, including people in wheelchairs. As a result, business owners have to make their facilities accessible for handicapped persons. Not only is it required, but it's also good for business.

So what type of wheelchair accessible construction are you thinking of? Homes and businesses should have handrails, wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and of course, commercial washroom accessories. At home you will need something to sit on while taking a bath, so a folding tub seat or shower seat will be necessary.
