Take the "Swamp" Out of Swamp Cooler
Posted on Jun 19, 2008 at 06:47 AM by Sam Streubel
| Comments (0)
Two stage evaporative coolers are a high tech version of the conventional, single stage swamp cooler. The
advantage a two stage cooler has over the conventional swamp cooler is the production of cool air with 10%-30% less humidity - depending on your climate.
A conventional swamp cooler, by its nature, adds moisture to the air it cools. To reduce the moisture, a pre-cooling, first stage was added.
In the first stage, warm, dry air is pre-cooled by passing through a heat exchanger cooled by evaporation on the outside. Because the air supply to the second stage conventional evaporator is pre-cooled, the end result is cool air with 50%-70% relative humidity compared to 80% humidity from a traditional swamp cooler.
An additional benefit of first stage pre-cooling and reduced humidity is extending the product's usefulness into hotter and more humid conditions.
The largest units have a cooling capacity of 3 tons, a supply air flow of 1,400+ cubic feet per minute and consume around 3 gallons of water per hour. This is sufficient cooling capacity for up to 1,700 square feet of living space.
According to the American Society of Heating and Engineers (ASHRAE), two-stage evaporative coolers can reduce energy consumption by 60 to 75 percent over conventional air conditioning systems.
Coincidently, I found a study by the Department of Energy simulating the annual power consumption of different cooling systems in a prototype house in Borrego Springs, California. The two systems I chose for comparison from the study are a 13 SEER, 3 ton, DX (Direct Expansion) air conditioner and a variable speed, 3 ton Oasys brand two stage evaporative cooler.
According to the study, the air conditioner consumed 3248 kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity during the cooling season. Using the average California retail electric rate (2007) of $0.1435 per kWh, the resulting cost is $466. By comparison, the two stage evaporative cooler consumed 667 kWh of electricity for a seasonal cooling bill of $96, or 79% less than the air conditioner.
The new two stage evaporative coolers have successfully taken the "swamp" out of swamp cooler, but may face some resistance to the $3,000 price tag until the next wave of electric rate increases hits home.

Pellet Stoves: Get'm While It's Hot
Posted on Jun 17, 2008 at 05:28 PM by Sam Streubel
| Comments (0)
The last thing you want to think about while sipping margaritas in your backyard is next years heating bill. And who could blame you?
But this is absolutely the best time to shop for a pellet stove. As much as shopping for a pellet stove during the hot summer months goes against human nature, you'll be one of the savvy shoppers taking advantage of favorable prices resulting from lower summertime demand.
Before you start shopping, you have to figure out which type of alternative fuel you're going to burn. Although many of the new pellet stoves are classified as "Multifuel" and can burn corn or wood pellets, there's a big difference in the price of corn and wood pellets depending on how close you live to the source. In other words, the closer to the source, the cheaper the fuel becomes.
For instance, if you can't name the location of the nearest grain elevator or cornfield off the top of your head, wood pellets will probably be easier (and cheaper) to get a hold of. On the other hand, if you can't drive more than a couple of miles in any direction without passing a corn field, corn would be the obvious choice. For those of you living in the North Central region of the U.S., you have the luxury of choosing between an ample supply of wood pellets or corn depending on which is cheaper.
Once you've found a reliable source of cheap fuel, the next step is to pick out an appliance designed to burn the fuel you've chosen.
For $2,000 or less, you can choose from a wide variety of stoves and fireplace inserts fueled by wood pellets, corn, or both. A typical 45,000 Btu stove or insert will heat 1,200 square feet of living space. This is sufficient to comfortably heat a ranch style home, modular home, or the main floor of a two story house.
With heating oil prices hovering around $4.00 a gallon, a pellet stove should pay for itself in two heating seasons or less.
If you're excited at the prospect of saving 30%-50% on next years heating bill, please visit Wood Pellet and Corn Stoves at Alternative-Heating-Info.com

Helpful Information On How to Install a Hardwood Floor
Posted on Jun 11, 2008 at 11:38 AM by Christopher Smith
| Comments (0)
In order to lay a perfect hardwood floor, you need to start with sub-flooring. Sub-flooring will provide a smoother surface to lay the hardwood on, plus it will add a layer of insulation under the hardwood. After choosing your hardwood, look at the instructions to find out what kind of sub-flooring the manufacturer recommends you use with that particular floor. The hardwood flooring will also provide you with a list of tools you will need to lay the floor as well as instructions on how to lay the floor.
You will need to cut the sub-flooring so that it will fit the space, and then nail it down securely on the floor. It needs to be at least ½" to ¾" thick in order to properly support the hardwood floor. It will keep the floor from moving around and keep the room warmer by adding that extra layer of insulation. If you're unable to make the sub-flooring lie flat because of problems with the original floor, you may need to smooth the floor with an application of joint compound and then let it dry before you go on with the project.

If you've ever seen a solid hardwood floor that's gotten wet, you probably already know what a disastrous effect water can have on wood floors. Wood by its very nature absorbs water. If you lay hardwoods on a concrete slab or in a basement, the moisture in the air will be enough to do bad things to the floors. Not only is the finish ruined, but as moisture dries, you see gaps between the boards when the floor contracts in winter. Dampness in the summer months may cause floors to buckle or cup.
Okay, you've already learned two things about hardwood floors. You know they should never be laid in damp places, and they need room to expand and contract. There's a lot more you need to know before you'll be able to make educated decisions about using solid hardwood floors in your own home. For starters, the woods used in most hardwood floors are maple, red oak, ash, or white oak because of their durable qualities.

By taking the amount of moisture you get in your basement into account, you'll be able to find materials which are better suited to your type of problem than others would be.
The best thing you can do to make any basement drier is to have dirt built up higher around the foundation so that the water will run away from the house. The rule of thumb here is to grade the ten feet nearest the house so that it starts 10-inches above the rest of the lawn and then drops 1-inch per foot. This will help remarkably in draining the water away from your house.

What Is An Electric Shower Head?
Posted on May 14, 2008 at 11:14 PM by Kate Neville

The idea of a shower head that plugs into the wall might be surprising. However, in locations where gas water heaters are difficult to find and install, they're more common (and safer) than you might think. Electric shower heads, when properly installed, warm up the water as it passes through them, allowing people who don't have a whole house water heater to take a warm and pleasant shower. Of course, as there's water in contact with an electric device, there's some risk of shock if the shower head isn't used properly. An electric shower head is usually rated for about forty amps, and needs a separate circuit that's well grounded. The shower head also tends to be heavy, and may need to be supported with extra wires, unlike an ordinary shower head.

What's Cool in Basement Ceilings!

A long time ago a basement was nothing more than a cold, damp space for keeping vegetables, fruits, and other items people wanted to keep cool. No one ever went down there unless they absolutely had to get something. As the years passed, people bought homes with these old cellars. They might use them to store their holiday decorations or other items they no longer want on the main floors of their homes, but they're still forbidding places. Of course, newer homes are being built with finished basements that can be used as extra living space. In keeping with their functionality, the ceiling is just as important as any of the other décor.
There are so many uses for a finished basement. It can be a wonderful area in which to entertain guests. If you have teens in your house, it's an ideal place for them to entertain friends while you live your normal life above ground. Some people choose to turn all or part of their basements into recreational facilities where the family can get together to enjoy many activities. Still others use the basement area as a place for guests to stay. When choosing the right ceiling for your basement, make sure to consider the function you're going to be using the area for.

For instance, a detailed description of the tools and materials like the ceiling fan, mounting kit, cable, outlet box, switch, wire nuts, neon test light, claw hammer, etc. are all mentioned in the manual. An easy-to-install fan can make installation easier, and at a far low cost.

Prices On Pellet Stoves Will Be Dropping Soon

Today I heard a prediction for $7.00 a gallon gas from an oil analyst talking on the radio. I wasn't too surprised because I remember hearing a similar prediction for $3.00 gas in 2004. The trend is definitely up, and we all learned in grade school science that a body in motion tends to stay in motion.
Along the way, speculators in crude oil futures will liquidate profitable positions causing fuel prices to temporarily retreat. This is when complacency sets in and all those plans to do something about your heating bill quickly become a distant memory.
This is especially true during the warm summer months. Probably the last thing you want to think about when you're sitting in the back yard sipping margaritas is next year's heating bill. And who could blame you?
But this is precisely the best time to start investigating cost effective heating alternatives to supplement your current system.
The first thing on your to do list should be figuring out which type of alternative fuel you're going to burn. This will be determined by your proximity to the source. The closer you are to the source, the cheaper the fuel will be.
If you don't know the location of the nearest grain elevator or cornfield, you should probably go with wood or wood pellets. If you can't drive more than a couple of miles in any direction without passing a corn field, corn should be the least expensive fuel.
Once you've found a reliable source of cheap fuel, the next step is to pick out an appliance designed to burn the fuel you've chosen. The most popular and least expensive choice is still the wood stove. For around $1000 you can buy a clean burning, EPA certified wood stove.
For about twice the money, you can choose from a wide variety of stoves and fireplace inserts fueled by wood pellets, corn, or both. A typical 45,000 Btu stove or insert will heat 1,200 square feet of living space. This is enough to comfortably heat a ranch style home, modular home, or the main floor of a two story house.
With heating oil prices hovering around $4.00 a gallon, a pellet or wood stove will save enough money to pay for itself in two heating seasons or less.
I realize shopping for a pellet stove in 90 degree weather goes against human nature, but you'll be the only one shopping; and when demand is down, so are prices.
If you're excited at the prospect of saving 30%-50% on next years heating bill, you can learn a lot more at the Wood Pellet Stoves - Corn Stoves section of Alternative-Heating-Info.com
The Beauty of Soapstone Sinks

Stone is becoming a much more popular material for sinks, and soapstone is in the lead, although granite and others are still common. These solid sinks feel warm and soft, and have few seams. They're easy to clean, and have a comfortable, pleasant mass to them. There are two basic types of soapstone sink: carved and assembled. The latter type are made of pieces of soapstone attached together to create a basin, and are the most traditional. They're less expensive than a carved soapstone sink, and offer plenty of space. However, if the sealant of their seams deteriorates, assembled soapstone sinks may leak, or dirt may be trapped.
