A comforter slip cover or duvet cover is an easy way to give your entire bedroom a new look. They're less expensive, and a lot simpler to clean than a brand new duvet or comforter, and they mean you don't have to deal with the hassle of getting a new bed set. However, not every comforter slip cover is the same. That means you'll need to pay careful attention to what you're buying when you go shopping. If you're wondering how to buy the right slip cover for your comforter or duvet, here's how.
The first decision you'll need to make is whether you're only getting a cover, or if you'd like to think about a duvet set. Sets consist of not just a duvet or comforter cover, buy also pillow shams and perhaps a bed skirt. They're a little more expensive, but they do make it easy to coordinate the entire bed. If you're making a major change and your old shams and other bedding don't match the new cover, it's a good idea to get a set. However, you can save a bit if you get a new cover that goes with your old bedding pieces.
Fabric is the next choice. There are a lot of options - some are good, but others aren't ideal. Natural fabrics are preferred, as they allow the duvet or comforter to breathe more easily. There are comforter slip covers available in plain weave cotton, cotton flannel, and many others. Organic cotton duvet covers are even available, for those who prefer that their bedding have a minimal influence on the environment. Not all synthetics are bad, either. Just look at each fabric on its own merit. Avoid stiff, closely woven synthetics if at all possible, since they'll also be uncomfortable against your skin. Some, like microsuede, may work for your bed.
Care for your new comforter slip cover according to the instructions on the tag. If you've purchased one made from all cotton and are concerned that it might wrinkle or shrink, wash it carefully, and don't use hot water. Or, buy a cotton duvet cover that offers a surface treatment to prevent these problems. Most duvet covers and comforter slip covers are best treated gently to prolong their life and keep them looking great.
Remember that not all comforter covers are the same, just as not all comforters are the same. There can be a big difference in the size of comforters and duvets, even if they're intended for the same size bed. Just make sure to measure yours before you go shopping, and buy a cover that has the right dimensions. Also, don't forget to take height into account. It doesn't matter as much with most comforters, but many duvets are tall and fluffy, which means you could have trouble fitting them into a narrower cover. Fortunately, it's easy to just buy a comforter cover that's a few inches wider and longer, and your duvet will fit without problems.
