Lose weight, lose weight, lose weight. It's all you hear about now. If you want to avoid heart disease, lose weight. If you want to avoid type 2 diabetes, lose weight. If you want to avoid alzheimers, lose weight. And the list goes on.

Okay, I'm getting the picture. Pretty much we all need to lose weight. This is the land of plenty, where 2nd servings and huge meals abound.

But what if you are having trouble losing weight? I was recently reading a magazine while doing the elliptical trainer at the gym. The cover caught my eye--drop 10 pounds and look 10 years younger. Okay, I'll bite. Exactly how do I lose ten pounds? I have been trying to do just that for quite awhile.

The plan for losing 10 lbs made me raise my eyebrows a little bit.

As I am reading this article, struggling to finish at least 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer, I realize the focus on the weight loss starts with exercise. I try to make it to the gym 2-3 times a week. Sometimes it is a struggle to not only get there, but also to get motivated to do at least 30 minutes of exercise and add a few weight-lifting exercises as well.

My son has always told me that if I can exercise and read a magazine, then I am probably not exercising hard enough to make any sort of major change. Well, after reading this article, I realize he is probably right. The plan calls for 40-60 minutes of hard exercise every day. It said to alternate between cardio, weight-lifting and yoga.

The truth of the matter is that you probably need to step up your exercise if you really want to lose weight, especially if you are over 40 years old. Since our metabolism is slowing down by the minute at this age, you need to offset it with exercise.

I'm not sure if I really have the time to go to the gym every day for an hour. It seems like I have a hard time making it just a few times a week. But, if I really want to lose weight, I will need to work up the desire and then the motivation to go. Until that time has come, I still plan to cut calories and do what I can to lose weight.
