Diabetes is a devastating disease, especially for children. It involves a complete change of lifestyle. Gone are the days of your child eating or drinking whatever they want whenever they want.

With diabetes, there must be constant monitoring of your blood sugar levels as well as a complete re-look at diet and especially snacking.

With all the worries of diabetes, should you let your child sleepover at a friends house?

Sleepovers for children with diabetes

Sleepovers may be out of the question for your child with diabetes, especially if your child has not quite developed any managing skills for his or her diabetes.

If you do decide to let your child sleepover at a friends house, there are some things that you can do to be prepared. Here are a few:

1. Make sure that your child has plenty of supplies. Keep them organized in a small bag.

2. Instruct your child to check his or her blood sugar level more frequently than normal, since he or she may be in a different environment. Maybe the kids will be jumping around or maybe they will be sitting in front of the TV. Either way, more frequent checks will keep things under control.

3. Bring plenty of snacks. Always have appropriate snacks available in your supply bag, maybe an extra bottle of juice or glucose tablets. This is important for situations where you are unsure what type of snacks might be available at the friends house.

4. Bring a pencil box to put all your used supplies and throw them away when you get home.
