Breast cancer is fast becoming the number one killer among all forms of cancer in women in all parts of the world, studies reveal. As in other forms of cancer, the cause of breast cancer is not really known but researchers in a study that came out in the British medical journal were able to identify certain factors that can trigger the abnormal multiplication of cells that is associated with cancer but cautioned that these were not 100 percent conclusive.

* Excess weight and eating foods that are rich in fats are possible risk factors.

* The long-term use of hormone replacements in menopause and the use of oral contraceptives is increasing breast cancer risk.

* A woman's age ( doctors say women after the age of 45 years are at risk).

* A long span of years between the start and end of menstruation.

* Not having children or having them after the age of 35.

* History of breast cancer in the family known as family cancer syndrome. The explanation given was that the persons involved have possibly inherited a number of factors that have combined to make them the more susceptible.
