Pathologically, i.e. when seen under microscope, it occurs in following types...

1. Small Cell Lung Cancer

It arises from the cells of neural origin. It is an uncommon type of lung cancer. It grows quickly & rapidly spreads to the adjoining parts of body. It forms 20% of all lung cancers.

2. Non Small Cell Lung Cancer

It arises from the lung tissues. It is the common type of lung cancer. It grows slowly & has less chances of spreading to adjoining body parts. It forms 80% of all lung cancers.

It is further divided into:

I. Squamous cell carcinoma: It generally occurs in central part of lung.
II. Adenocarcinoma: It generally occurs in the peripheral i.e. outer part of lung.
III. Large cell carcinoma: It occurs in any part of lung.

Generally, adenocarcinoma has better prognosis than any other type of cancer.
The factors on which the prognosis i.e. the final outcome depends are...

I. Stage of the cancer at diagnosis
II. General health of the person
