Meditation begins with relaxation

Meditation begins with relaxation

About the Author
Chesa Keane

We all hear about meditation and how you can "go within" to find peace, joy and happiness. Well, I can't and don't disagree. However, most people jump to the concept of meditation without understanding that you have to train your mind to concentrate before you can successfully meditate. And before you can concentrate, you must learn to relax.

For help on your path to meditation, you might want to use a meditation tool that will allow you to make a positive association with your meditative experiences. A mediation tool that works very well is the TAO Totem. This beautiful tool is layered wood lathed into a shape that fits the hand. It is like a worry stone for the hand. Using this tool that you can carry in your pocket, you can create an association that will remind you of your calm, quiet and peaceful state of mind wherever you are, whenever you need it.

But, still, we need to get on that path of relaxation first. A Basic Relaxation technique that I have taught for years can be found at http://www.taototem.com and can be downloaded for free both in PDF format as well as an audio guided version in MP3 format. Use this technique to get your mind free from stress, tension and worries. Once relaxed, then you can develop your concentration skills so you can focus on your topic of meditation, whether it is the deep concept of enlightenment or something as simple as exploring peace within.

TAOTotem.com also has a free online meditation series of lessons that will guide you carefully and methodically from relaxation to concentration to meditation in steps that are easy to follow.
