As we get older, our metabolism slows down naturally. There isn't much that you can do about it. If you continue eating normal, without adding any exercise, you will gain weight.
I have heard so many times from people that are on a diet or weight loss program that they eat much less and exercise and still cannot lose any weight.
So, what's up with that?

Losing weight is always a major focus of many dieters. It's all those extra pounds that are causing the trouble. What if your trouble is extra pounds and extra fat.
Losing fat is slightly different than losing weight. It involves a whole new approach that dieting alone cannot achieve.
I started an exercise program several weeks ago called P90x. After 2 1/2 weeks into the program I am noticing some changes in my body.

Yeh, right. 2 minutes a day for 4000 years. All these little marketing slogans that companies use can really get old after awhile. Recently I read one that said something like 8 minutes a day to a flat belly. I mean really.
Several weeks ago I started an exercies program called P90x. I don't normally buy stuff from infomercials, but after seeing this one, I decided it might be worth a try.
I think after doing P90x for 2 weeks, I have come to a very solid conclusion about all those marketing claims from other programs/diets that claim you can lose fat, weight, get fit in a few minutes a day.

What Dietary Plans To Choose For Quick Weight Loss
Posted on May 14, 2009 at 10:26 AM by Reuben Oyeyele
| Comments (0)
Years ago when obesity was referred to as the modern day epidemic, eyebrows were raise, and some even took it with an air of skepticism. The fact is that obesity is an epidemic because more are more people worldwide are becoming obese day by day.
In the US, weight loss and diet has since become a multi-million dollar industry, there is no single day when the topic is not discussed thus weight loss and diet plans have experienced pro and counter arguments as to which is supposed to be the best.
You can come across the 5-Factor Diet, Atkins Diet, Bob Greene's Best Life Diet, South Beach Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, Anne Collin's diet and now you have DASH diet and Fat Smash Diet and Size Zero Diet and the list goes on with no ending.
Those who advocate each diet plan make claims about the amount of the excess fat you can get rid of and how fast you can do it. Some even claim a loss of 10-12 lbs in a matter of just one week whereas experts warn that such claims are baseless and that such proportions of losing weight may be dangerous because it causes water loss and thus put the body in risk of dehydration. Another setback of such programs is that you put back weight as fast as you lose it once you stop implementing the said diet plan.
All in all, those weight loss plans come down to the basics. Fat, muscle bones and water contribute to increased weight. Excess calorie intake is responsible for increased weight. By cutting your daily calorie intake, you can cut down on the weight you gain. Increased metabolism burns the fat stored in the body. The solution is to perform easy weight loss exercises without having to starve and deprive your body of the essential nutrients.
Dietary plans may be grouped into 3 basic categories: the "fad diets", those that are based on specially processed food and those that can be called as "natural diet" plans.
Fad diet is popularly believed to be a poor weight loss diet. A fad diet generally becomes very popular very quickly and falls out of favor just as quickly. Fad diets quite often claim very quick weight loss. Their claims for efficacy are generally not confirmed by any legitimate scientific studies.
The natural diet plan is based on use of food constituents that are normally in your diet; it recommends some of the constituents as being helpful and some others as being harmful from the point of view of weight loss. For example, it may recommend certain fish such as Sardines, herrings, etc as providing beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids or may recommend use of lean meat but not others such as pork; it may recommend low-fat skimmed milk but not the normal fresh milk. Natural diet is based on very clearly understood and recognized scientific knowledge.
The third category of diet plans mentioned above are based on use of specially processed food ingredients or supplements; this category is so highly commercialized that even if it has scientific basis at times lies on the boundary of fad diet plans.
This leaves us still in dilemma as to which dietary weight loss plan could be the winner. So which plan should I employ in my quest for an effective weight loss?
Different people react to different conditions and the same goes for weight loss. A person may find solutions in herbal fat binders and appetite suppressants and others may find solutions in Hoodia gordonii based weight loss supplement. The bottom line is to find the best solution for your weight loss.
The best thing is to do a lot of researches, consult experts, visit forums and discuss your demise and maybe you can find a person with similar problems of weight loss problems as you. You may even obtain suggestions from those who have succeeded.
CITES - Little Known Facts About Hoodia Exportation
Posted on Apr 25, 2009 at 06:59 PM by Reuben Oyeyele
| Comments (0)
Very few Hoodia Gordonii based weightloss products are made from the fresh plant. These are companies which have established their integrity in the weight loss industry and one which can be relied on. Some of them are as fresh as just a month old before they are converted into the supplements you use.
The South African plant - Hoodia Gordonii won worldwide popularity for its ability to curb appetite and hunger as well as cut daily calorie intake by a fantastic figure of 2,000. These days, almost every weight loss products based on herbal extracts are based on Hoodia Gordonii. But since this plant species is peculiar to a limited region of the planet, something has to be done to protect this plant.
Human beings are known for their destructive attitude towards just anything that proves to be a source of profit. Now in order to protect and preserve Hoodia Gordonii from extinction, the international preservation organization put this plant under the CITES convention.
Definition:
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Adopted in 1973, and entered into force in 1975.
Following the CITES convention, before Hoodia Gordonii can be exported out of South Africa, exporters must get the CITES certificate. Once got, they have got up to 6 months to export it out of the country. Further, every product made from Hoodia Gordonii must carry this certificate.
Have you ever noticed or checked the CITES certification on any Hoodia based weight loss product? By checking it, you may come to find that most of them carry ages that range between 6 months and a year.
Attention:
If you have been using Hoodia Gordonii based weight loss product, take time to check whether it carries the CITES certification or not. If it does, all good and well. Some unscrupulous manufacturers produce products under the name of Hoodia supplements but by a closer look, the product has nothing to do with Hoodia.
Other things to pay attention to is the time the certificate was issued. So as you can see the date of issue on the CITES certificate is already 6 months old. Then there is the next stage of reaching the manufacturer. By the time it has reached them and has been made into the supplement you see before you, it could be a year later. We all know that with age, some valuable properties decline (with the exception of wine).
The point is as long as the certificate is up to a year old, there should be no problem concerning taking or using the Hoodia Gordonii based product.

A study published in Pediatrics (November 2007) has found that people who get lots of sleep are less likely to be overweight. Researchers followed up 785 children for three years and found that those who sleep more in third grade were less likely to be overweight in sixth grade.
A similar study called Nurses Health Study, analyzed data from 68,000 women and concluded that women who slept five hours a night were 30 percent more likely to gain 30 pounds during a 16-year period from women who slept seven hours a night (American Journal of Epidemiology, 2006 ).

Can one be fat and free from heart disease? This interesting question has in fact prompted numerous researches to find out whether exercise or weight has a greater influence on the risk of heart disease.
The latest study by researchers from Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre found that even high quantities of physical exercise would not eliminate the risk of heart disease for overweight or obese women, unless they also lose their body weights. They reported on April 28, 2008 in the Archives of Internal Medicine that being active could only lower but not eliminate risk of heart disease faced by heavy women.

Why Crash Dieting Is Bad
Posted on Mar 22, 2009 at 05:35 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes
| Comments (0)
Dieting slows down the metabolic rate and reduces the amount of oxygen you take in, study shows.
Dr. Ancel keys, the great American bariatrics (science of weight loss) expert, was one of the first to discover that dieting reduced the oxygen intake and slowed down the metabolism at rest. He took volunteer students and put them on a restricted diet of 1570 calories a day for twenty-four weeks. Keys and his colleagues found that the volunteers' resting metabolic rate had declined by thirty-nine per cent, and they had become apathetic and tired. Two of the young men had nervous breakdown. Keys theorised then that the body used the drop in oxygen as a mechanism to slow the metabolic rate with all it's attendant ills.
What happens is that the moment that food intake is reduced the metabolic rate and the oxygen intake begin to fall drastically. The more oxygen you take the more likely you are to be calm, confident and brimming with vitality. A slowed down, sluggish metabolism and a diminished use for oxygen is the very opposite of vibrant health, wellbeing or successful performance. Yet, that is the damage so many of us inflict upon our system by constant dieting.

What Secret Lies Behind Hoodia

A few days ago, Barbie, the revolutionary doll celebrated her 50th birthday. Congratulations! May she live 50 times and more over. Now what has Barbie got to do with Hoodia? A lot.
When Barbie was created 50 years ago, she triggered such a revolution the world has never seen before. Her perfect slim body was what millions of people, especially women have dreamed about all their lives. The result was that millions of women aspire to have such a perfect body.
Years later, a very strange desert plant and its properties to help overweight people lose those extra pounds was discovered. That plant is called Hoodia with the scientific name Hoodia Gordonii. This plant immediately took the world by storm as soon as scientists released their findings about its weight loss and appetite reduction properties.
Is this the thing that could help millions of overweight people display bodies to die for? Maybe, just maybe, this is the magic formula we've all been waiting for. Maybe this is the real secret of having a body just like Barby.
Let's face it, the onslaught of fashion magazines and shows has drummed the perfect shape of a fit body into everybody's brains. We all know how we're supposed to look like to be attractive and to give off that "carefree success" look. What we did not know is that the next big thing in dieting comes from South Africa
From the sandy expanses of the Kalahari Desert intrepid businessmen bring a cactus called Hoodia. Weight loss experts are already excited over the avenues opened by this plant that curbs hunger.
For hundreds of years the Kalahari Bushmen have been eating Hoodia to keep hunger at bay during long hunting trips and in times of drought. And now millions of people living in industrialized countries are about to join them, as Hoodia-based pills are made available in the USA. At first, no scientific tests were conducted on humans to check the effects of this plant. We know it works for the bushmen, but will it work for everybody just as well and without side effects?
People high and low, from Hollywood stars to high-powered entertainment staffers to the common man, everybody was willing to overlook the lack of official studies and have a go at Hoodia Gordonii. Many people have been fighting excess weight all their lives and are interested in just anything that promises fast and effective weight loss.
The weight loss industry has since been very busy, finding ways to market this product. After going through series of laboratory and clinical tests, the Hoodia Gordonii plant was found to be a very valuable plant in weight loss and as such, it has been made into pills.
One of the latest and most effective drugs launched on the weight loss market is the ProShape rx. Does it have the amazing Hoodia among its ingredients? You bet! This new pill may well prove to be a ray of hope for overweight people looking to improve their looks and health by shedding those extra pounds. If Hoodia is really the magic plant all overweight people are waiting for, then ProShape rx is one of the best choices around.
Now back to Barbie. Is it possible for everybody to have a slim body like her? Well, this may be a topic for discussion. Not everybody will be able to have bodies like Barbie from the simple reason that weight loss programs require strict discipline and discipline is very very difficult to maintain by everyone.
The answer to the question is if you are disciplined in your quest to reduce your weight, by using Hoodia Gordonii based herbal weight loss pills, there is a very big chance that sooner or later, you will have a body just like Barby. Just to be curious, has anybody seen a fat and obese Bushman even in pictures?

Are you still doing boring cardio workouts?

For years I have been going to the gym 2-3 times per week and working out for about 30 minutes. Typically I would do the elliptical machine since it is very gentle on my knees and hips.
I would actually sweat during these 30 minutes on the elliptical. Sometimes my tshirt would be completely soaked. I mistakenly thought that I was improving my cardio fitness by doing this exercise.
The other day I had to be several places at the same time and I had to walk very quickly from one event to the other. I was totally winded very quickly. How can I be so winded? I wasn't even running.
So, the last 3 weeks I have changed things up a bit and I am already starting to see the difference. See what I have changed.

I was walking on the treadmill the other day at the gym and I started looking at all the readings on the machine. Usually I just ignore them and read a magazine or watch TV.
The calories burned reading really caught my eye. I was only planning to walk 2 miles--about 30 minutes on the treadmill, and the calories burned for this was under 200.
200 calories is really nothing. Isn't that what you eat in a medium size apple? Do these calories burned really matter?

Whenever I read a diet or weight loss plan that mentions you shouldn't eat out, I almost immediately dismiss it. I really love eating out. The ideal that I don't have to cook, clean or go to the grocery store is very appealing. I just couldn't give it up.
However, after eating out a few times in the last month, I have come to realize why diet plans mention not eating out. Many restaurants now have websites with calorie and nutrition info listed. Last week I was stunned to find out that my favorite sandwich at Panera was nearly 1000 calories.
Yesterday was a stunner too. I can't believe how many calories are in this meal.

Tony Little, known as America's Personal Trainer in physical fitness, has helped many people lose weight by following his 28-day program outlined in his best-selling book, "One on One With Tony Little : A Complete 28-Day Body Sculpting and Weight Loss Program."
Here's some smart health tips included in his book which he considered important to losing weight and keeping it off :
1. Don't forget to eat your breakfast and eat it after your workout not before. If you skip breakfast, you will have no energy, and no energy will eventually make you fat. Choose lean protein such as eggs, egg substitutes, lean beef, turkey, chicken, fish, or tufo for vegetarians. Only broil, bake, boil, or poach. Use only olive oil or Pam spray.
2. Minimize consumption of high-glycemic carbohydrates (carbohydrates that make your blood sugar level spike) such as white rice, sugar, certain pastas, and potatoes. Seek out cereals that are low glycemic for good-body choices.
3. When eating carbohydrates, eat them with proteins and keep the portion size small.
4. Eat high-fiber foods or add fiber to your diet.
5. Water, water, water. Drink lots of water daily. Drink it before a meal to help get you more full quickly.

A study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine (2008,Aug. 11/25) showed evidence that abdominal visceral fat (a larger waist circumference) can be a sign of an increased risk for heart disease and that the risk exists even in normal-weight people.
Researchers from New York at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University evaluated 5,40 adults, aged 20 and above. Subjects were then divided into three groups according to their body mass index ; normal weight, overweight, and obese. The study also assessed the participants for heart-disease risk factors and were classified as "metabolically healthy" if the subjects had none or one risk factor, or as "metabolically abnormal" if they had two or more risk factors.

Can I Eat While On Weight Loss Program?
Posted on Jan 4, 2009 at 04:00 AM by Reuben Oyeyele
| Comments (0)
The question of eating while on a weight loss program plagues a lot of people. Most would be weight losers consider that eating can have a negative impact if you are trying to lose weight. This may be true but the fact is that your success in weight loss depends of what you eat and how you prepare it.
The key is to reduce calorie intake as well as staying away from foods that contain high cholesterol levels.
It is possible to eat while losing weight without the need to starve to death. You eat normally but keep down the calories.
Chicken And Fish
These fall into categories called white meat. They contain lean proteins and low cholesterol levels. Other sea foods that may be considered are lobsters, shrimps and even crabs. Cooking should be done without using too fatty oils.
Fruits And Vegetables
These should be wonderful companions on the eating table. They increase your metabolism and so burn up excess energy stored as fat. It is advised to eat fruits and vegetables but mix it with something else and not just fruits and vegetables alone because it may lead to iron deficiency anemia. This is a phenomenon known to the Vegetarians.
Beans
Beans are very good sources of protein. Although they contain certain amounts of carbohydrates, it is advised not to over eat them. Combine them with other food items.
Diary
There is a lot of low sugar and fat milk available these days. Cottage cheese too is some very good diary products you should strife to eat. Losing weight is not an easy thing to maintain, so you must be prepared if you want to go all out and lose a reasonable amount of fat every month.
Acai Berries
Since they were features in the Oprah show, they have become very popular because they contain very nutritious components that help you eat little and not malnourished. This is the reason why most recently developed herbal appetite suppression pills contain extracts of Acai berries.
There are other food items that can be eaten in normal quantities without adding extra pounds to the body weight. The key is not to over do things.

If I say nowadays teens do not love vegetables or other healthy foods, I bet many of you will hardly disagree. Reason is simple, healthy foods are simply not yummy to them.
The youngsters just eat whatever they like. The types of food they enjoy most are fast foods, and unarguably, these are usually unhealthy. Either they know very little about what they should eat and what they should not or they simply find these irrelevant to them. That is why so many youngsters become overweight or even obese. The childhood obesity has already become a global epidemic that cause headache for the respective governments.

Watching TV is another problem among children who spend long hours sitting in front of the TV set instead of doing some physical exercises. But, are you aware that spending long hours in front of TV is more likely to raise blood pressure of obese children? This is the finding of a recent study conducted by the University of California, San Diego and published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Think Before Going For Weight Loss Surgery!

A new research, published in the Archives of Surgery, had shown that people who have undergone so-called bariatric surgery for obesity have a higher death rate than other people of the same age. The cause of death is due to suicide and coronary heart disease, in particular.
Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh studied the data for all Pennsylvania residents who underwent a bariatric operation such as stomach stapling or gastric bypass between 1995 and 2004. They then compared the number of death of these patients with that of those in the general population.
It was found that there were a total of 440 deaths after 16,683 weight loss procedures during the study period. Male gender and advancing age were both associated with the increased death rates.
For all age groups, the death rate was much higher in bariatric surgery patients than in the general population. But for patients between the age of 25 and 34, the difference was particularly pronounced. Their death rates for male and female patients were 13.8 and 5.0 per 1,000 persons per year, respectively. In comparison, the death rates in the general population were 1.3 and 0.6 per 1,000 persons per year.
Coronary heart disease was found to be the most common cause of death. 16 suicides were also found with 10 of them were women. Comparing with the data from the general population, researchers estimated that only 3 suicides deaths would have been expected in this number of people.
The researchers also suggested that a better control of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking, as well as efforts to prevent weight regain by diet and exercise, and psychological support to treat depression and prevent suicide could reduce the excess deaths after bariatric surgery.

I started the Flat Belly Diet over 1 month ago, starting with the jumpstart that eliminates bloating. I lasted about 2 weeks on the diet and then was sidetracked with a serious sinus infection among other things.
During the jumpstart the idea was to eliminate foods that can cause bloating in the stomach. I had always heard that foods like beans and broccoli can cause gas and bloating, but I was really surprised to find out about some other foods/drinks that I eat regularly cause bloating.
Yesterday and today I woke up with some serious bloating and to get rid of it, I need to reduce or eliminate the offending foods and jumpstart back into my diet. Here is a list of the offending foods in my diet.

The Fast Slim Diet Plan. Does It Work For Everybody?
Posted on Oct 5, 2008 at 09:20 AM by Reuben Oyeyele
| Comments (0)
To most people who aspire to reduce their weight, the use of diet pills and diets that almost starve to death are regarded as dependable ways of fast weight loss. However, it is not advisable to implement these methods since they cause many harmful side effects. The goal is to lose weight safely, effectively and with no negative side effects. The fast Slim diet plan offers a fast weight loss. It is a natural cure for weight loss.
This method uses herbal products to replace meal shakes, supplements and diet pills which suppress appetite, increase energy level and metabolism rate and also detoxify the body. This results in burning of excess calories and loss of weight.
One of the techniques used in this plan is called calorie shifting. This is a process by which you You eat in a constantly changing routine so that the body will not be able to adapt to the changing routine; this way the body metabolism is increased and results in increased fat burning and eventually reduction in weight. For ten days the dieter takes diet pills and drinks meal replacement shakes. The shakes reduce hunger and on the other hand
provide the body with the necessary important nutrients. In order to promote health and weight loss, the diet pills and supplements contain soy protein, caffeine, green tea, etc.
This plan may not be advisable for certain people however and may not suit certain group of potential weight losers. Those with diabetics and/or with high blood pressure are advised to stay away from this calorie shifting plan. The reasons are obvious. The large amount of fructose may not suit diabetics patients and the caffeine may not suit those with high blood pressure. If you are planning to use this method to lose weight, it will be a smart move to
first seek advice from a medical practitioner and/or a nutritionist.
Of course, while on fast Slim Diet, stay away from junk food and untimely snacks also. Exercises are essential even when on the fast slim diet. Especially light cardio exercises for about 30 minutes a day for at least three times a week can help you keep up the metabolism and help your weight loss routines.
Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water; apart from helping the body functions water helps you to reduce your food cravings by suppressing appetite.
Many dieters who have used this diet plan have experienced that they lost weight in the plan period but when the plan ended they regained the weight. To achieve a lasting weight loss it does require commitment to healthy eating habits and regular exercising which takes you to natural weight loss.
It is not easy achieve a lasting effect of weight loss within a short period of ten days. That is why many consider the sudden slim diet plan as a fad.

In the book The Flat Belly Diet, there is a 4-day jumpstart to the diet. The jumpstart focuses on getting rid of bloating issues and preparing yourself for the diet that consists of 4 400 calorie meals per day.
Jumpstart Days 1 and 2 went well, Day 3 not so well. So I redid Day no. 3 yesterday.
I knew that Day 3 redo would be a challenge since I woke up early and I was going to a football game that night--where you can smell popcorn, hotdogs etc.

The diet has a 4-day jumpstart to the diet to help you get rid of bloating issues and to try and get used to the eating schedules and calorie amounts.
I did pretty good on jumpstart days 1 and 2. But Jumpstart day 3 didn't go all that well. Let's just say the problem involved apple pie and ice cream (oops!). So I decided that yesterday was a do-over for jumpstart day 3.

There's nothing more annoying that looking at the serving sizes for food to find out that 1/2 a cup or so is the actual serving size for the calories listed on the box.
Who comes up with these serving sizes anyway? Probably one of those super-skinny models. They moonlight with food companies to come up with serving sizes that are sometimes equivalent to a few spoonfuls.
Day 2 of my Jumpstart for the Flat Belly Diet went well, except for some issues with serving sizes. Although, today I have to say I am feeling a little bit......................

The 'Protein Power' To Weight Loss

It used to be gospel for athletes in the sports world that the way to be most competitive and get the nutritional edge was to do "carbohydrate loading" to supply the muscle with plenty of glycogen. However, what we now know is that for most athletes, too many carbohydrates and not enough protein make it hard to lose weight and gain muscle and can contribute to sluggish performance.
What is protein? Protein is made up of amino acids and is not only important to good health but essential. Protein is used by the body for repairing tissue, for growth, and specially for building muscle. Protein is absolutely essential for building muscle and boosting the rate at which the body burns stored fat. In their book, "Protein Power," Michael and Mary Dan Eades explains how the more muscle mass you have, the faster your metabolism will be and the faster you will burn fat calories.

A good weight-loss program has three legged components, namely : diet, aerobic exercise, and weight-lifting, according to sports health expert Tina Aboitiz Juan. Most people are familiar with dieting and aerobics but few consider weight-lifting as a weight-loss tool because they think it is only for body builders. Here's what lifting weights can do that dieting and aerobics cannot.
* Weight-lifting raises metabolic rate
Your "basal metabolic rate" is the rate at which you burn calories at rest during a 24-hour period. According to Tina Juan, the only practical way to increase your metabolic rate would be to increase your skeletal muscle mass. This is achieved by lifting weights.

The "Write" Approach To Lose Weight

The amount of food you eat or the amount of exercise time you do is important if you are trying to lose weight. Research shows that keeping records of what you eat and how often you exercise has been proven effective.
Using the power of the pen and consistently writing down the pound gained or lost has the following benefits :
* Food awareness
Writing down what you eat makes you aware of what you are eating and what you are not eating. Nutritionists are prescribing a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables. Keeping records makes you aware if you are eating the ideal, which is seven to ten servings a day or the other way, that you are not eating even the minimum daily. It can also help you clean up your daily diet of all the extras that you don't need.
* Food and mood
Research shows people turned to food binge when they are sad, mad, glad or scared. If you want to find out if you are using food as an emotional crutch, write down what you are feeling when you eat. Keep tract of your moods and know whether you are eating for physical or emotional reasons.

The No-Diet Approach To Weight Control

What is the best diet for losing weight? None, according to Greg Phillips and Gail Johnston, authors of "Redefining Success With Healthy Eating." They say the only sure way to permanent weight loss is to make exercise and sensible eating habits parts of your life.
According to Phillips and Johnston, you can lose weight without dieting by understanding the following eight beliefs :
* There is no such thing as being on or off a diet.
Being on a diet implies that one day you're on diet, the next day you're back to square one. Even "good " diets are a temporary measure. The authors say it is better to adopt a way of life with healthier habits that work for you rather than impose a very restrictive diet on yourself that can be unhealthy.
* There is no right or wrong way to eat.
Phillips and Johnston say healthy eating is all about moderation and balance. A lifetime eating plan includes all the foods you normally eat that produces a secure and comfortable feeling that food is not your enemy.

As explosive as her new album "Touch My Body," Mariah Carey was also triumphant in her weight loss regimen from a size 8 to a size 2. It is reported that Carey shed 20 pounds over eight months. She is now sporting a new slim body shown on her youthful teenage body on the cover of her new album.
Mariah Carey, the 38-year-old five-time Grammy winner and who has just gotten married to her soul mate Nick Cannon, credits her transformation to her 1,000 to 1,500 calories-per-day regimen. Mariah was quoted as saying in an interview : " I used to wake up and say, 'What do I want to eat?' But now, rather than just order any old thing that tastes good, I will sit down and say, 'What works for me that is going to keep me at the size that I am going to feel better about myself?"
Mariah Carey is serious about her workouts, Patricia Gay was quoted , her personal trainer for the past eight years. Carey would invite friends, hit the pool with her and do aqua aerobics. Patricia gave an outline of Mariah's water workout. For a 20-minute warmup, they aqua jog, do dolphin kicks and breastrokes. Then the singer would do 30 minutes of full body exercises in the water, pushing the water with her arms and legs, and doing mermaid moves for her abs and lower body.

Health Risks Of Obesity

Obesity is a condition where large amount of excess fat is accumulated in the body. It can be hereditary, due to an existing medical condition, but majority is usually due to too much food intake coupled with sedentary living.
Obese people especially if excess fat is around the belly, are at a greater risk of contracting certain diseases. According to Eduardo G. Gonzalez, M.D., obesity is known to contribute to the development of Diabetes Mellitus. It is also associated with hypertension (high blood pressure) and high levels of cholesterol which predispose to heart disease. It increases the workload and the chances of failure of the heart.
Among fat people, the incidence of gallbladder stones is also higher, Dr. Gonzalez wrote. Obese women have a higher than average incidence of menstrual disorders, infertility and complicated pregnancies. In overweight men, the occurrence of impotence and sterility is higher than average.
Some forms of cancer are also strongly associated with obesity. The risk of developing cancer of the breast, uterus, cervix, ovary and gallbladder is higher than normal among obese one. In fat men, the risk of developing cancer of the colon, rectum, prostate, pancreas, and stomach is increased.

An extra hour of sleep at night might be the key to lose weight and battle obesity, according to latest research.
"More sleep could be the ideal way of stabilizing weight or slimming," said Karine Spiegel, a neuro-scientist from France Inserm, a public organization dedicated to biological, medical and public health research. Two key hormones, Grehlin and leptin, produced at night which help regulate appetite were at play, Spiegel said. Grehlin makes people hungry, slows metabolism and decreases the body's ability to burn body fat. Leptin, a protein hormone produced by fatty tissue, regulates fat storage.

Is Marriage Making You Fat ?

| Comments (0)
A study from the University of Minnesota confirms what many married people know from experience - marriage can make you fat.
There are many reasons married couples gain weight. Researcher Robert Jeffrey said that the weight gain was partly due to a shared environment of too much calorie-rich food and not enough exercise. But the basic reason is most of the married couples no longer have as much motivation to keep their weight under control because they are no longer in the market looking for a partmer.
Looking attractive is not the only reason why married couple should try to stay fit. Your kids deserve healthy parents who will be around to watch them grow into adulthood. Gaining weight is usually the result of unhealthy lifestyle habits, like not getting regular exercise and eating food high in fat and sugar, which in turn increases your risks of getting heart disease, diabetes and hypertention.

PPH: When Losing Weight Can Kill
Posted on Feb 22, 2008 at 08:20 AM by News Jockey
If you found yourself in the middle of any February prior to 1997 and packing a few extra pounds, you might have been one of the millions of Americans turning to Fen Phen, the magic diet pill that was all the rage until it was revealed that Fen Phen was a suspected link to PPH, an often fatal lung disease. Today, you may be turning to a PPH Class Action lawsuit.
You would have been forgiven for embracing Fen Phen, especially given its exalted status at the time. Fen Phen was actually the combination of fenfluramine (Pondimin) and phentermine, and was hailed as an answer to anyone with any kind of weight problem, no matter how severe.
And in the middle of February, in any given year, weight loss for millions of Americans is top-of-mind. First, February follows January, which follows the excesses of the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. If you had a weight problem going in, that problem is exacerbated after so many helpings of turkey and plumb pudding.

The old proverb "Eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince, and dinner like a Pauper," is an old folk's wisdom vindicated by modern research as the easiest yet powerfully effective way for every man and woman who has ever fought a continous battle with overweight.
Food researchers discovered that by altering your mealtimes you can lose weight without feeling hungry. There are, of course, biological reasons why this easy strategy of meal reversal is so effective. The food that we eat is digested and absorbed at different rates depending on the time of the meal. Food eaten at breakfast and lunch turned into energy. Food eaten at night is more likely to be turned into fat. Why?

Dieting only to have the weight come back, bringing along a few more pounds to keep it company, can be quite stressful. For many people dieting has become too stressful. This may be why there are so many people who are using acupuncture to handle their long term weight issues. Acupuncture involving standard practices, including hair thin needles being inserted into the body in selected areas, is used to help enhance proper functioning of the body.
A release of endorphins by the body is stimulated by acupuncture. These endorphins are used by the body to relieve pain and for appetite control, thereby giving the patient increased willpower. For those who are obese, the cause of obesity may have to be evaluated through a questionnaire administrated by the acupuncturist. Both behavioral patterns and psychological reasons can be the cause of weight problems.

You can enjoy eating holiday treats without accumulating unwanted calories or enjoying the treatswithout having to feel deprived during the holiday season.
The tips I am about to share with you are from health professionals who share their ideas on how to say no to all the yummy stuff during parties or holiday treats :
* Write down what you eat.
It is possible to lose weight during the holiday season by committing yourself to keep a food diary where you write down everything you eat and monitor your intake. Seeing what you ate in black and white helps to keep you from going overboard.
* Never go to a party hungry.
Eat something filling but low in calories before the party. Fruits also help control the appetite. One can make a wiser choice at the buffet table if you don't have a hungry stomach.
* Eat only the food that you really like. If you cannot resist to taste everything, your best defense will be to eat small portions.

It has been thought for some time now that aerobic exercises are good weight loss exercises that are helpful to the body. On the contrary, aerobic exercises are not a good weight loss exercise because they do very little to tone your body. The exercises that help tone the body while helping with weight loss are resistance exercises including weight training; this is what actually tones your body and muscles.
Both of these exercises, aerobic and resistance, are great for reducing fat and increasing muscle mass. Research shows an increase of more than 55% weight loss by combining the two types of exercising within your weight loss exercise plan.

Atkins Weight Loss - Worth The Hype?
Posted on Dec 4, 2007 at 09:14 PM by Christopher Smith
Although I had heard a lot of information about low carb weight loss, I was still quite skeptical, to say the least. Atkins weight loss simply sounded too good to be true. I had a friend who was on the Atkins meal plan, and although I didn't get to see him frequently since he lived across country, he claimed that the results were stunning and spectacular. Through the Atkins diet plan, he said, he had lost 10 pounds in just over a week. It was hard for me to believe that that was true. Furthermore, it was hard for me to believe that it was healthy. The Atkins meal plan involves eating nothing but high protein food, and small helpings of non-starchy vegetables. There is no way that this is good for the body!

Obesity is an epidemic in the lives of children today. As parents, it is hard to know exactly how much to say to help change this in our children. If we push too hard, we could end up making the problem even worse or we could harm the relationship that we have with our children. If we don't say anything, then we are in some ways condoning the problem and not giving them the tools that they need to help make this problem better. There are some things that you should refrain from saying to your child if they have a weight issue. Here are five things you should keep from saying:

Juice Fasting For Quick Weight Loss
Posted on Nov 11, 2007 at 07:42 PM by Sandra Kim Leong
| Comments (0)
Juice fasting is a method usually adopted to give your body a rest from too much activity in digesting foods and to allow it to remove waste and toxins that have been accumulating in your body. Hence, during a typical juice fast, except for water, you do not consume anything else other than the juices for a period of time. A noticeable loss of weight and fat can be experienced in a juice fast. If done right, you can expect quick weight loss.
It seems pretty obvious that a detoxification diet such as juice fasting will also relieve you of unwanted body fat because many toxins are found in the fat cells. By eliminating the fat, the toxins are released into the body so that they can be eliminated through the typical procedures, such as urination or through the lungs. This is why juice fasting gives you energy and provides better overall health.

Obese people each have their own food triggers that can lead them to eating more than they should. Their weight loss program is hampered by the fact that they have an addiction to a particular type of food that they do not think that they can do without. One such addiction is to sugar. Sugar is one thing that can lead to obesity because it converts to fat if not used up through energy output. A Closer Look At Fat-Burning Foods

If you're one of the skeptics who thinks the idea of super foods that can burn fat and boost metabolism is bunk, you're not alone. The fact of the matter is that a single-food diet is not good for the body and it really won't help boost metabolism. There is, however, a certain level of truth in the notion that grapefruit, celery and other super foods can help with weight loss and metabolic rate boosting.
While medical science has failed to substantiate the grapefruit or celery diets, it has known for a very long time that these foods are good inclusions in a healthy diet. They also tend to be rather low in calories. Celery is even quite high in fiber, which can help reinforce the body to burn more calories during it's digestion.

Aneroxia Symptoms That You Must Pay Heed To

| Comments (1)
Out of all the eating disorders known, anorexia nervosa or aneroxia is the most common. It is a relatively new condition as it emerged only in recent times. Aneroxia is a condition that has everything to do with our thoughts on looks. Many of us are greatly influenced by the constant slew of marketing visuals on how the perfect body should look like. Thse visuals invade everywhere; be they in fashion magazines, in the stores, on the TV and on the web.
Aneroxia happens when you have a distorted view of body proportions. You are likely to believe that you are overweight when in fact you are not. You are overly concerned about having too much fat on yourself when there is actually no cause for that belief. You become obssessed with exercising, dieting and losing weight. Anorexia nervosa is largely considered a psychological disorder.

Dieting is simply about burning more calories than what you consume. It is mathematics. This simple fact is often overlooked, with the many novelty diets that are available on the market today.
Natural foods have great health benefits, as well as being great for the dieter. Combine eating more natural foods with more exercise and you should see results. In fact, the more processed your food, the more calories that they are likely to have.

Sauna is widely used for as a method of skin cleansing. This is an ideal detox method for the elimination of the environmental chemicals stored in the fat cells. For skin cleansing using sauna, a dry heat sauna that is not treated with the toxic chemicals is required.
The infrared sauna treatment is generally used for skin cleansing to stimulate the body for the elimination of toxins. The release of toxin usually starts with the elimination of carbon dioxide. After the elimination of carbon dioxide, the infrared rays start the elimination of waste materials, drugs, poisons, and other toxic materials trapped in the tissues.

You feel like you're going too slowly - only four pounds, say, in the last couple of weeks.
But, consider this. The slower change happens, the more easily you can accept it in yourself. If you lost 20 pounds in two weeks, it would probably throw you off balance. Any real change requires steps that add up, so you have time to adapt.
Take the steps necessary, go slowly. It is a tried and true recipe for lasting success.

Ellie is a believer in women's causes. She's anti-diet. She can give you a wonderful, impassioned lecture on the impossibly skinny ideals for women put out by the media. She often tells herself and others how she accepts herself at this weight. She is 52 years old, after all. Sounds reasonable.
Even so, Ellie needs to rest now every few minutes while she power-walks the dog, so she can catch her breath. Each time, her heart sinks a little.

Here's a good weight loss exercise.
You've read success stories. They're so uplifting, inspiring. They make you feel like, If she can do it, so can I. They make you realize it actually can be done. Here is someone who did it.
So, the exercise: Write your own weight loss success story. Write it now, even before you are successful. Use your imagination. Use the weight loss dreams you have for yourself. Create the new version of you that you long to see. Tell about the journey, the steps it took to get you there.
Then, read your own weight loss success story. Let it inspire you. let it help you know you can do it. Take advice from it. The steps you talked about, the things you said you did to bring you through a diet to successful weight loss can become very real. Use your own plan.
If you can think it, you can do it.
Read your own weight loss success story.
Be your own weight loss success story.

Weight loss and thinking go hand in hand

I'm a very social person. I love my friends and being with them is a necessity for me. We have parties, lunches, dinners out, special occasions together. I can't live without all of this. At the same time, I work full time and the kids always have something going on that I am a part of. I pride myself on all I do, on being busy and productive. I want so much to be thin again, but it seems my diets are doomed to fail because I'm so distracted by the dizzying array of things my life requires of me.
I've been thinking about it, and I came up with this.
* My father was in politics at a high level and I was expected to be present at many important functions.
* My mother put me on a diet because I was chubby and she was embarrassed.
* She put me on the first strict diet when I was ten years old.
* From then on, all the special food at all those important functions was not allowed to me.
These days I take every social opportunity to break my diet. Am I still rebelling against those early diets? I think I am.

Two women, one plump, one slim.
Lucy thinks, "She's one of the lucky ones".
Samantha thinks, "That's how I'll look if I'm not careful".
It's a power lunch. Lucy is a buyer for an upscale department store. Samantha is an up-and-coming handbag designer. There's a business deal to negotiate. Both are attractive, shining hair, good makeup and clothes, lovely smiles.
Lucy sees in Samantha unique early talent, a virtual well of creativity. Samantha is in awe of Lucy's experience, business know-how, power position. Still Samantha thinks, "She would be beautiful if she lost forty pounds".
The deal gets made. Two strong women, each giving the other what she needs.
Lunch is served. Both Lucy and Samantha worry over every bite of food they take, not out loud, but inside.
They look so different, one plump, one thin. But on the inside they look the same.

Weight loss tip for Overeating: To observe is to disturb
Posted on Sep 5, 2006 at 09:28 AM by Ken Schwarz
| Comments (0)
Are you in the habit of overeating?
Well, a habit becomes a habit because we've done that particular thing so many times we don't even think about it anymore. It's just automatic.
Here's a trick: observe the habit. Stop and think about it. Simply by giving it some consideration, you interfere with that habit. Whether you think about it before you overeat, during a time when you overeat or even after an episode where you overeat, you will have an effect on the habit.
The more you think about your habit of overeating, the less strength it will have. Destructive habits do not hold up too long in the face of investigation.
Keep wondering about this anti-weight loss habit of yours and it will soon lose its power.

Stress, balance, and weight

We are most healthy when our lives are in balance.
We need to balance being in control with allowing for the possibility of change.
We need to balance our own needs with the needs of our family and friends.
We need to balance quiet times with active times.
We need to balance drives and ambitions with rest and replenishment.
We need to balance work and play.
A life in balance is richer, more rewarding, less stressful.
If you are consistently overeating, you are significantly contributing to a life out of balance. If your life is geared towards food, there will surely be a balance upset.
And living your life out of balance is not good for you at all.

Strong body, strong mind, yes. Strong mind, strong body, yes. It works both ways. It's a reciprocal arrangement.
Your mind is always working behind the scenes, whatever you're trying to accomplish. Your mind is the primary moving force when you diet. Put your mind there and your body will follow.
Everything we do is affected by our feelings, attitudes, beliefs, self-esteem. Put your mind on these. They are the best diet enhancers.

Weight loss tip: You have to change
Posted on Sep 2, 2006 at 09:25 AM by Ken Schwarz
| Comments (0)
Changing yourself is a process like any other. It has a beginning, middle, and end.
It starts with the realization that making a change is important. It always involves learning about what it is that's been making it difficult for you to change. You then will have to find ways to make these changes.
You can apply sound principles of self-change in order to
* break bad habits
* gain control of behavior
* apply oneself
* relieve anxiety
* stabilize mood
* rework personality
* improve relationships
* alter beliefs
* develop new lifestyle
* live safer and healthier
* adhere to a diet
* achieve permanent weight loss success
One principle common to all self-change is that people need to use their own resourcefulness to change. You want to change, but you may not have the necessary resourcefulness to change. Where will you get it from? One place to get it is from trying to change, and learning to be more resourceful in the process.

Secrets of weight loss

There are secrets locked in layers of fat.
These are secrets kept from others, but more often than not, these secrets are kept from you yourself.
You can be a researcher. You can not only lose weight, you can also unlock some major riddles of your life.
Try investigating your eating problem. Think about it. Through digging just a bit deeper than perhaps you have before, you can discover reasons why you overeat.
Sometimes, believe it or not, that's all it takes. Sometimes you don't have to struggle to make yourself stop overeating. Sometimes, just being willing to open a window into yourself that you have not opened before, changes everything.
You might need help to do this. Look to friends, family, a trusted advisor. Of course, there is always professional help if you need it.

* Tomorrow I'm going on a diet.
* Tomorrow my life will be much better.
* Tomorrow I'll get gorgeous.

* Tomorrow my hair will shine, my clothes will fit, I'll be a success.
* Tomorrow my house will be in perfect order.
* Tomorrow my marriage will be ideal.
* Tomorrow I'll be rich.

Is there enough motivation in your weight loss program
Posted on Aug 30, 2006 at 09:19 AM by Ken Schwarz
| Comments (0)
Motivation to diet and lose weight can be affected by many things. sometimes hopelessness plays a part, sometimes disappointment, and sometimes even just being tired can get in the way.
We tend to think of motivation as a particularly magical mindset that some people have and some people don't. It really doesn't work that way. Motivation can come and go for all of us - it can be high at times, it can be low at times.
Really sticking with something may take just a little extra thought and consideration, digging just a bit deeper, reaching just one more level of understanding beyond where you are now.

When being social helps your weight loss plan and when it hurts it
Posted on Aug 29, 2006 at 09:17 AM by Ken Schwarz
| Comments (0)
In social situations like dinner parties, office picnics, and weddings, the social situation can make it easier for a person to use highly practiced skills and to improve abilities that are well-established. Skills that are still being learned, not yet built into lasting abilities, however, can be disrupted by these same social situations.
Being self-assured as well, makes it even more likely that social situations will improve skills and enhance abilities.
Being apprehensive, on the other hand, has just the opposite effect on a person's competency.
What does this mean for dieting and weight loss?
It means that for social events, make sure your diet skills are well-practiced. If so, you'll find yourself in the enviable position of having the social situation improve your proficiency in sticking to your weight loss plan.
If you're socially apprehensive, though, it's a different story. You'll have the best chance to keep to your diet plan if you find ways to make yourself feel more secure before you go to the party. Then once you're at the party, you too will be able to use the social situation to improve both your security and your dieting and weight loss skills.

Weight loss plan for Gina
Posted on Aug 28, 2006 at 10:17 AM by Ken Schwarz
| Comments (0)
Gina told us this:
The hardest part of a diet is that it is a diet. I have to limit certain groups of foods and exclude others. I do not have free choice of everything possible and it makes me feel constricted. That's what leads me to be bad, to binge, to put back in my mouth those thngs I have a right to have.
Even if the diet is good for me, even if I actually like it, I go off because I feel like I HAVE A RIGHT TO HAVE IT ALL.
Meanwhile, I'm seriously overweight and I have to keep saying it doesn't matter. I'm suffering physically.
If Gina were to think just one layer deeper, she might discover some things. She might find out what lies unspoken beneath her words.
To go to that deeper level, she could ask
* What do I mean, "I want it all"?
* Do I feel deprived in other ways?
* Have I always felt this way?
* Am I deprived of other things in my life that I need and want?
* Does eating it all give me what I'm looking for?
Gina doesn't have to have all the answers on the spot. She doesn't need to analyze every bit of her behavior. She doesn't even have to look into her past, unless she wants to. If she could just consider these relevant questions, just keep them in mind, she would begin to change, and she would begin to solve her weight problem.

The weight loss tip to remember: It's never just about food
Posted on Aug 28, 2006 at 10:16 AM by Ken Schwarz
| Comments (0)
We all know this, but we forget.
We forget in the face of the next new diet, the latest thinking in how best to metabolize fat, how to not be hungry, how to lose it quicker than quick. These ideas are seductive and they help us forget the real deal.
Permanent weight loss, which is the only kind of weight loss that matters (Who wants to keep losing it and gaining it back?) requires personal change that lasts. The process of personal change is not quicker than quick, but it is what works.
Here's an example. Do you make sure to ignore any physical repercussions of being overweight? If you get extra tired, or can't move the way you want to, do you tell yourself "this is because of my weight"? Or do you push it to a far corner of your mind?
If you don't recognize the ramifications of being overweight, you can always say to yourself "it doesn't matter, I'll be okay without losing this weight", and then go ahead and break your diet.
The food matters but there's a lot more to it than that.

Detox diet: A Broad Overview

A detox diet is one that you undertake to help eliminate toxic waste that has been accumulating in your body. If you feel sluggish, have frequent colds, digestive problems or just do not feel your best, you may have a toxicity issue. A detox diet will help you clean the harmful matter from your body and even to lose weight.
By right, our bodies go through a natural detox process by themselves. The organs that are involved in this process include the colon, liver, kidney, intestines and skin. These organs help our bodies eliminate toxic and harmful matter from our bloodstreams and tissues.

Obesity And Heart Disease

We only have to look at a Titian painting to recognize that at one point in the history of Western culture, fat was considered beautiful. Before the 20th Century, corpulence was touted as a sign of wealth and luxury, largely because most people were barely surviving on a meager existence.
Ironically, now in our era of affluence and plenty, we have to contend with the health and economic problems of obesity. We have a population in North America that is more than 55% overweight. More than 20% of those overweight are considered obese, a situation which proves to be an economic burden on our Health Care system because of the coronary risk factors associated with obesity. In 2004, total national health expenditure in the USA was $1.9 Trillion or $6,280 per person.
Why is obesity a risk factor for heart disease?

Do you know that dieting can be an eating disorder as serious as binge eating?
“I began dieting at 13 and started throwing up at 16, after I saw another friend do it. At first, it was just something I’d do now and then, after I’d eaten too much or when I felt too fat. But soon it seemed like I was eating too much too often and feeling fat all the time. In college, I started running to try to keep my weight down, but I couldn’t stop eating. The academic and social stress was just too much for me. I remember at night going from vending machine to vending machine, trying to fill this insatiable need to eat and then feeling so disgusted afterward I would find the nearest bathroom and throw up. "

You see them everywhere—magazines featuring emaciated teen models with brash, defiant looks that say “We express ourselves,” their arms and ankles glistening with fashion accessories. The definition of “cool chick” in another magazine is a glossy-lipped, half-woman, half-child peeking ambivalently behind a set of heavily mascared eyes. ”I am confection,” she seems to say, her body eloquently displaying a padded push up bra. Such teen marketing tactics have been successful in making their point. Girls, as young as ten, have made the word “diet” part of their vocabulary and the La Senza part of their identity.

Walking And Weight Loss

Three universal goals most of us share are: to live longer, to
live free of illness and to control our weight. Interesting
enough, normal walking lets us achieve all three.
In fact, walking may be man's best medicine for slowing the
aging process. First, it works almost every muscle in the body,
improving circulation to the joints and massaging the blood
vessels (keeping them more elastic). Walking also helps us
maintain both our muscle mass and metabolism as we age. It also
keeps us young in spirit. For anyone out of shape or
unathletically inclined, walking is the no-stress, no-sweat
answer to lifelong conditioning.
All it takes is a little time, common sense and a few
guidelines. Unfortunately, there's a lot of misinformation
floating around regarding fitness walking, weight-loss and
dieting.

Day 6-10 turned out to be okay calorie-wise, despite the fact that I was travelling. Eating out at restaurants and fast food places has always been a struggle for me. Nowadays, with the updated menus of most restaurants, it is much easier to watch what you eat while enjoying your meal at the same time. Find out about some lower calorie options at many popular fast food restaurants, so that you can stick to your 6 week diet program.

The Key To The Zone Diet

The key to the Zone Diet is balance. The diet consists of a balance of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in a ratio of 40:30:30. This induces a hormonal balance in your body.
Zone Diet does not mean a strict “no” to snacks. You can eat everything and still lose your weight. This is because Zone diet believes that food, if taken in proportionate amounts, does not harm.
If you want to stay miles away from heart diseases, diabetes, and other potentially fatal diseases, follow a Zone Diet plan and watch your body glow with health!

Diet Recipes Can Harm Your Diet

I recently read "The Ultimate Low Fat Baking Cookbook." This is a huge, glossy-photo coffee table books, so I start flipping through and first thing I noticed the photos. They were taken close up to make it appear the cakes and slices of pie were normal sized, but if you looked closer you could see that was not the case. These were Barbie doll sized portions! Every cake recipe made the equivalent of a one-layer round yet served eight. You do the math. Divide it in half, then again into quarters, and finally into eighths and you've got some dinky portions. So, naturally the calorie count, fat content, carb content, and the sodium are low, but that's not a diet recipe.
That's why I've usually shunned these cookbooks. Yes, they do make some substitutions to bring down the overall fat content in the recipe, but let's be realistic. When's the last time you made a batch of cookies that served 18?

Try Juice Fasting as Your Detox Diet
by Sandra Kim Leong
Our bodies get toxins from the highly processed foods that we consume, the contaminated water that we drink and the polluted air that we breathe. When there is an overload in toxins, the organs that are involved in the elimination of waste and toxins ends up being stressed. That is when we start to experience symptoms such as chronic headaches, skin allergies, premature ageing, etc. These symptoms are indicative of our ailing organs.
There are many ways that you can eliminate toxins from your body. One is by colon cleansing and another is through a detox diet. Juice fasting is a method of detoxification via diet. Many studies have shown the beneficial effects of juice fasting: treat bio chemical imbalances, reduce our cholesterol levels, treat allergies, acne, weight loss, etc.

Weight Loss: Break Your Addiction to Your Favourite Foods
by Evelyn Lim
It is easy to be addicted to our favourite foods. Very often, when we like a particular food, we do not realise that we have been overeating on them for the less half hour. The problem lies in that these foods tend to be the ones that have many calories and hence adds a load of toxins and weight to our bodies. Think chocolates or fries or any of your yummy dessert!
The first thing that must be done in order to break a habit of your addiction to these foods is to know that you have a habit that you need to kick. If you don’t recognize what is bad for you, and what is actually helping you to keep a healthy balance, then it will be hard for you to break. Analyzing and evaluating what your habits are is the first step to success in determining a break in your habits.

It’s contest time again, kids!! This month, I’ll be giving away a total of $100 in prizes for your efforts in building our community on the RenewedReflections.com message boards. The contest runs from noon Central Time on Friday, March 3rd, until midnight Central Time on Friday, March 31st (2006, of course).
Here’s the prize breakdown:
- A $50 Amazon gift certificate will be awarded to the person who invites the most new members to the Forums. (Newbies must introduce themselves in the “Newbie Challenge” thread and say who invited them!)
- A $25 Amazon gift certificate will be awarded to a random member of our Forums who brings at least five new people to the message boards. (Again, make sure your friends give you credit when they post in “Newbie Challenge”.)
- A $25 Amazon gift certificate will be awarded to the newbie who joins and posts the most in the Forums.
- Each winner will also receive a copy of the critically acclaimed CD, Born to be Wild, by Big T & The Bada-Bings. (Curious what you’re in for? You can hear samples of all the tracks at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bigt.)
We currently have close to 100 members on the boards, and more than 900 posts. Odds are, each of you knows several other people who are considering weight loss surgery or have had WLS and could benefit from the insights and encouragement of our other Forum members. My goal is for the RenewedReflections message boards to become a dynamic and active community where WLS pre- and post-ops can share their experience, strength and hope for the benefit of us all. Help me make this a reality—and maybe win some cyber cash, too!
Lastly... (in my serious voice) For this contest, it is the sole responsibility of the inviting member to make sure their newbies register on the boards and post who invited them in the “Newbie Challenge”. We want them to become active participants in the site, but if they don’t give you credit in the special contest area first, they won’t be counted as your newbie!

Nine Years After Gastric Bypass Surgery
Posted on Feb 17, 2006 at 01:25 PM by Craig Thompson

Craig 'Big-T' Thompson
In May of 1997, I filed physical bankruptcy. Like thousands of men and women around the world—maybe like you, too—I had gastric bypass surgery. I knew it would scar me for life, but it could give me a brand new start. The operation shrank the size of my stomach, making it physically impossible to eat more than just a few bites at a meal. The weight immediately began to melt away, and within one year, I had lost nearly 200 pounds. But I had only treated the symptom. Like taking aspirin for the headache of a brain tumor, the problem seemed to go away, but the cause of my insanity was still lurking beneath the surface.
I had changed my body, but I had missed the mark. I applied a physical solution to a mental, emotional and spiritual problem. I only addressed the symptoms, rather than the disease itself. I never regret having the surgery, because it gave me a second chance to physically live, which bought me time and put me in a place to deal with the real issues.
Now that time had come.
After nine years post-op and talking with thousands of of WLS patients around the world, I have found one common thread with most of us:
The weight wasn't the problem...I WAS !!
Yep, the grey matter between my ears was the real problem. If this describes you, too, you may want to read this...

HUGE News Today for the Gastric Bypass Guru

Folks, I am so freakin' excited tonight. I just got a call from a national radio syndication agent asking me if I would be willing to host a weekly one-hour radio show. They would syndicate it here in Texas first, then nationwide.
Many people don't know this, but my very first job ever was in radio. At the age of 14, I was Texas' youngest Disc Jockey. In 1978, I started calling radio request lines listed in the Yellow Pages. When I got a DJ on the phone, I would start to schmooze them until I finally asked, "What would it take to just come up and watch a real professional, like you, on air?"
Well, the very last station in the Dallas phonebook at the time was (in my deepest radio voice) "1610, Gospel Country, KXVI". I really didn't care it was a Gospel station. I was 14, and I was getting my foot in the door.
Within three weeks, bada-bing, I have the times that nobody else wanted: Sunday mornings 6am to noon. Anyway, I quickly went on to other stations once I had some air time. I landed, by mistake, at an oldies broadcaster that played hits from the '30s, '40s and '50s. I had no idea of the music I would be listening to. Before long I was totally hooked on Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Bobby Darrin. The rest, as they say, is history.
I won't have details of the offer until sometime next week. Until then, puh-lease keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I think this would be a great complement to the Gastric Bypass Guru site at http://www.renewedreflections.com/.

Gastric Bypass | Life Lessons I Learned From Frankie Sinatra
Posted on Feb 17, 2006 at 01:04 PM by Craig Thompson
| Comments (0)
A couple of months after my big mental and emotional crash in the summer of 1999, I decided I needed to get a new Best Friend. I had just seen a movie in which Gene Hackman had a Jack Russell Terrier on board his submarine, and he claimed that the Jack was the smartest dog on the planet. Since I didn’t want to play second fiddle to anyone, the Jack Russell was the best friend for me. (I also knew that if I found one smart enough and cute enough, I might get some of the credit for the smart and cute part.)
I found the perfect pup and bestowed the coolest possible name I could come up with for the Jack Russell purebred registry. Francis Albert Sinatra was the king of cool and exemplified my love of classic music and swank retro style. Frankie had a new home.
I had done quite a bit of reading on Jacks and knew I was in for a handful. However, as was the story behind most of my bumps and bruises, I thought my special gift of uniqueness would ensure that I didn’t have the same level of challenge and aggravation every other JRT owner experienced. I was sadly mistaken. As they say here in Texas, I was in for a good old fashioned butt whuppin’.
When I first brought my new puppy home, I was sitting on the exact opposite side of reality. I thought I needed to teach this dog how things were done, the whole time unaware of the fact that God had put Frankie in my life to teach me some of the most important lessons I would ever learn.

Stomach Balloons - I have a Bad feeling about this one
Posted on Feb 17, 2006 at 12:48 PM by Craig Thompson
| Comments (0)
This is NOT gastric bypass surgery. The stomach balloon has been around for a few years now and once again getting some media coverage.
I have a dear friend from Saudi Arabia who had this after seeing the success I had in the first couple of years. She wasn't comfortable with having her plumbing re-routed permanently. Nor was the lap-band available where she was. She is filthy rich, so she decided that she could go in for an office visit similar to a Botox treatment, and have a balloon shoved down her throat into her tummy.

Gastric Bypass Surgery - Will Insurance Pay?

As the number of Americans diagnosed as severely or morbidly obese continues to grow, so does the need for gastric bypass surgery. Insurance companies are increasingly aware of this medical need, and many have integrated coverage for gastric bypass surgery into their policies in cases where the surgery is deemed medically necessary.
Prior to considering any sort of weight loss surgery, you should make sure that you fall within the guidelines as outlined by The National Institute of Health (NIH). Obesity, in general, is determined by one’s Body Mass Index (BMI). This is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared.

All Diets Work, No Diets Work

Have you lost weight in the past only to regain it a short time later? Have you followed every diet including Atkins, South Beach, the Drinking Man's diet, the Peanut Butter diet, or even the Chocolate Diet? All of these diets work, and none of them work, meaning you can and probably do lose weight on any of them, but you won't keep it off. Why not? Because the day will come when the diet is over and you're right back to your regular routine; the same routine that got you fat in the first place.
Diets typically carry a warning not to stay on them longer than two weeks, some a mere three days. Today's popular diets are attempting to style themselves as lifestyle choices, but this isn't working. People want to be able to eat a sandwich now and then. They want the burger and the bun! Strive for balance choosing foods you prefer, and you'll have a better chance at lasting weight loss success.

Does eating fat free foods really make you loose weight?
Posted on Nov 12, 2005 at 08:55 AM by Nathalie Lussier

First of all, it's important to note that there is no such thing as a 100% fat free food. Everything has a certain amount of fat, sugar or other contents that your body could store as fat. There are some foods that are easily digestible and that your body will easily take in and use the energy of. This is what I would consider to be a really fat free food: vegetables and fruits. You can't go wrong with these choices, because your body was made to eat these and it knows how to store the vitamins and take the energy from it, without making you bulk up.

Halloween means much more than just eating bags of minature candy bars. Remember carving pumpkins as a kid? Mine always looked the same, but if I'd had the Pumpkin Carving Instructions found at Pumpkin-Carving.com, it could have been a different story.
Everything you've always wanted to know about carving pumpkins, but were afraid to ask including Pumpkin Carving History with the story of Jack O' Lanterns; How to choose the right pumpkins; pumpkin carving tools; traditional carving and more.
Start now and just think how excellent your pumpkins for next year could be. Holidays are about family, community, events, experiences. Food is important, but there is much more when you are willing to get your hands a little dirty.

The holiday season is just around the corner.
Thanksgivings is just about 4 weeks away. Then Xmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza, to name a few. Your waistline is just about to get the assault of its life.
You know the drill...you come to work and all sorts of goodies await you... brought in by colleagues, co-workers and associates. Maybe you have the willpower to say "no" to it all. Maybe you don't.
Instead of waiting until the holiday season is over to 'get back into shape', why
not start an pre-emptive strike today?

Mice Benefit from Yo-Yo Dieting Say Researchers
Finally, another mouse study indicated that on-again, off-again dieting may actually prevent breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Mice on the so-called "yo-yo" diet regimen had a 96 percent reduction in cancer, compared to the animals allowed to eat whatever they wanted.

Are You Eating Too Much?

You’ve probably asked yourself this many times in the past: Am I eating too much? This is the typical scenario, you look at yourself in the mirror and see some excess weight then you look at the amount of food on your plate and say “no wonder!”. Well you may or may not be eating too much in quantity, but you might be eating too little in quality.

Diet Fads Part 2

So what is the best diet advice? My solution is as old as dirt and pretty simple.
1) Watching what you eat is very important, but I believe that variety is important. Try foods that you wouldn't normally eat. They may have nutrients your body is lacking. Also, eat things in moderation.
2) Move around as much as possible.
3) Stick with it. People I run across are always starting new diets. If they had just stuck with it they would notice greater results and not have to keep starting every New Year or in the Spring.
Pretty simple, huh. Usually the simple solutions are the best ones.

Why is it that when you decide to get in better shape or lose a few pounds, life suddenly throws you a curve?
I decided to "get back in shape" and had a planning session about what I might change, how I might do it, and whether I believed I could do it (would I follow through or was I kidding myself?).
My plan is a regular workout schedule (four days a week at home), drinking less wine (special occasions and weekends instead of regularly), and tightening up "weekend eating" from my current Thursday evening through Sunday to just Saturday and Sunday.

Finally, Splenda Brown Sugar. I've hunted the stores for months trying to find DiabetiSweet Brown Sugar Substitute to no avail. Evidentially it didn't sell well enough for stores to stock it, but now we'll see how the new SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend fares.

I hear so many of these fad diets, low carb, no carb, fats are good, fats are bad, etc. It's quite ridiculous in my opinion. From my experience there is no "one size fits all" diet program. Everybody has different body types. A lot of people refer to foods as being "good" or "bad" for you. What they really mean is: Good = low fat, or low carbs; Bad = high fat, or high carbs. But what they consider good I often consider bad or indifferent.

You might not realize this, but unless you've been eating a perfectly healthy diet your whole life, your body is filled with negative toxins. Every thing you eat is absorbed by your body. Usually the toxins of the foods you eat are expelled through your bowels, but what if you don't have bowel movements after every meal? That's where the Body Brush comes in!
The skin is the largest body organ, so it only makes sense that your skin should be used to expel toxins. But what happens when your skin is not doing its job?
