Virility Secrets

Posted on Oct 29, 2009 at 10:13 PM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Maintaining sexual vigor is dependent upon the healthy functioning of our glandular system, wrote Dr.Ronald Thayer, in his popular book, "Avoid Premature Aging." By giving superior nutritional support to the endocrine glands, especially the ovaries, testes, pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, and the prostate gland, you may increase your sexual vigor, postpone menopause, and improve physical health and stamina, the doctor narrates.

Here's what comprised Dr. Thayer's Gland Stimulating nutritional program :

1. Take a natural vitamin-mineral supplement daily that contains at least 30 mg. of zinc. Zinc has been found to be of great importance in the functioning of the prostate gland, male genital tract, the eye, and the pancreas. Food high in zinc are : pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, brewer's yeast, seafoods, oysters, liver, wheat bran, wheat germ, eggs, onions, nuts and lima beans.

2. Go to a health doctor and request some "beef glandular extracts." The extracts from the glands of beef , when taken orally, head for their respective tissue or gland. They serve as stimulus to cause our own glands to function more effectively.

3. Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol)
Vitamin E is called the fertility vitamin. Here's some of it's benefits :
a. Stimulates sperm qualitatively
b. Helps prevent miscarriage
c. Aids in reducing menopausal synptoms
d. Improves circulation
e. Increases the available oxygen to the tissues
f. Helps in retarding the aging process

Pantothenic acid, also known as Vitamin B5 is a member of the Vitamin B complex family. It was discovered in 1938 by a brilliant biochemist, Dr. Roger J. Williams. Dr. Williams and the other research groups that follow after him, have found that panthothenic acid certainly improves endurance and strength, which is why super achieving athletes love it.
Benefits discovered of this B5 vitamin are : Pantothenic acid boosts the auto-immune system, and protects against serious illness or infections ; It helps repair exhausted adrenal glands ; improves our capacity to handle stress ; relieves arthritis and all allergic conditions; gradually restores colour to graying hair. Quite an impressive list for a vitamin, which in the words of it's discoverer, Dr. Williams 'was left languishing unnoticed for thirty years before anyone realized it's full potential.'

Vitamin D Deficiency A Key Factor In Osteoporosis

Posted on Apr 15, 2009 at 04:18 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Prolonged deficiency of vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis, says Kenneth Cooper, the father of aerobics and founder of the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. "More women will die of complications of osteoporosis of the hip than of breast cancer, and you can't just take calcium and expect it to prevent osteoporosis unless you have sufficient vitamin D," says Cooper. Insufficient vitamin D is also linked to prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer, added Cooper in a July 2007 article in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Can I Eat While On Weight Loss Program?

Posted on Jan 4, 2009 at 04:00 AM by Reuben Oyeyele | Comments (0)

The question of eating while on a weight loss program plagues a lot of people. Most would be weight losers consider that eating can have a negative impact if you are trying to lose weight. This may be true but the fact is that your success in weight loss depends of what you eat and how you prepare it.

The key is to reduce calorie intake as well as staying away from foods that contain high cholesterol levels.

It is possible to eat while losing weight without the need to starve to death. You eat normally but keep down the calories.

Chicken And Fish
These fall into categories called white meat. They contain lean proteins and low cholesterol levels. Other sea foods that may be considered are lobsters, shrimps and even crabs. Cooking should be done without using too fatty oils.

Fruits And Vegetables
These should be wonderful companions on the eating table. They increase your metabolism and so burn up excess energy stored as fat. It is advised to eat fruits and vegetables but mix it with something else and not just fruits and vegetables alone because it may lead to iron deficiency anemia. This is a phenomenon known to the Vegetarians.

Beans
Beans are very good sources of protein. Although they contain certain amounts of carbohydrates, it is advised not to over eat them. Combine them with other food items.

Diary
There is a lot of low sugar and fat milk available these days. Cottage cheese too is some very good diary products you should strife to eat. Losing weight is not an easy thing to maintain, so you must be prepared if you want to go all out and lose a reasonable amount of fat every month.

Acai Berries
Since they were features in the Oprah show, they have become very popular because they contain very nutritious components that help you eat little and not malnourished. This is the reason why most recently developed herbal appetite suppression pills contain extracts of Acai berries.

There are other food items that can be eaten in normal quantities without adding extra pounds to the body weight. The key is not to over do things.

Resisting Cancer Via Nutrition

Posted on Oct 19, 2008 at 05:11 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Nutrition, health experts say, is the most promising means of controlling cancer. We know now that every cell in the body is replaced over a period of seven years. The new cells are made up of the nourishment taken into the body. You are, literally, what you eat. Although, there are natural chemical carcinogens in many food plants, but they are counterbalanced by a wide range of nutrients that help prevent cancer. The key is to eat more cancer-preventive foods and at the same time avoid substances known to promote the disease.

M. Roffers, writing in his bestselling book, "How to Fight Cancer with Your Fork," said that the armories of our defense system require specific nutrients to function effectively. These include beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and the mineral selenium. Fiber and a class of substances called "indoles" found in vegetables of the cabbage family are also powerful cancer preventives. The following is adapted from the book :

For years scientific researchers have made it clear that all plant fibers are indeed good and essential for buoyant health. We know now that we need both the hard fiber in cereals and woody vegetables, and the soft fibre of fruits and gels.

Two fibrous seeds with extraordinary benefits deserved special mention. One is psyllium husk. Psyllium husks provide the fiber which has the best ability of all to sweep toxins from the body. This superb benefit is so appreciated in English herbal tradition that the psyllium is known as "Nature's broomstick."

Power In Apples

Posted on Sep 12, 2008 at 03:54 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

In a nutshell, apples are nutrient-dense fruits. Here are just a few reasons you should consider eating apples regularly (unless, of course, if they are treated with toxic pesticides).

* Apples are rich in a type of fiber called pectin. For years, scientific researchers have blitzed us with the message that plant fiber is good, and pectin in fruit is excellent for lowering cholesterol levels. Further studies have shown that pectin is able to eliminate bile acids from the lower intestine and also 'binds' with harmful heavy metals such as lead and aluminum to carry them out of the system (Vicki Peterson : Strategies of the Champions : A Unique Guide to Fitness, c1988).

Nutritional Approach To Anxiety Disorder

Posted on Aug 12, 2008 at 04:53 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Anxiety disorder is described by health experts as more than the normal anxiety people experience day to day. This is a complex, involuntary physiological response in which the body prepares itself to deal with an emergency situation, when none may actually exist. Here are typical symptoms : heartbeat and breathing become more rapid, as more adrinaline is produced. There is a continued state of worry and stress. There can be shortness of breath, dizziness, hot flashes, chills, trembling, sweating, or nausea. A tendency to anxiety disorder may, to some extent, be hereditary.

Here are some suggested nutrients from The Natural Remedies Encyclopedia, the master book of home remedies, to help calm the mind of people with anxiety disorder :

* Take calcium daily, along with magnesium. A multivitamin supplement is important.

* The B vitamins are needed for healthy nerve and brain activity. Vitamin B1, helps reduce anxiety and calm the nerves. Vitamin B2 reduces anxiety and energizes the system.

Health Benefits Of The Omega Essential Fats

Posted on Jul 2, 2008 at 04:26 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Many nutritionists and health experts now believe that essential fats are absolutely vital to our health and wellbeing. Deficiency in these nutrients are key reasons why we have gradually become unhealthier over the past decades.

Essential fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids, known as the 'good' fats in contrast with the saturated or animal fats, which are linked to incidence of heart attacks They are essential for optimum health though they cannot be made by the body and must be obtained from the daily diet.

There are two types of essential fats : the Omega - 6 family which comes from the plant world, most abundantly found in pure vegetable oils, nuts, seeds and grains ; and the Omega - 3 family which is found in fish which swim in deep cold waters, such as salmon and herring.

I once heard a doctor describe our bodies as having a 'bone bank' where every time we drink milk or eat calcium rich foods we are making a deposit. Our bodies only accept deposits until we reach our mid-20's.

Megadoses Of Vitamins : Claims And Warnings

Posted on Jun 12, 2008 at 04:01 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Claims have been made that megadoses of vitamins - 25 or more times the RDA, are effective in preventing diseases. So far none of these claims are accepted by the majority of health experts.

Nobel Prize - winning biochemist, Dr. Linus Pauling, has made claims for the efficacy of vitamin C in doses of a gram or more per day. According to Dr. Pauling, large doses taken regularly help to prevent the common cold. Several studies have been conducted to test and evaluate his theory, but these have produced conflicting results. Critics of Pauling's megavitamin therapy have suggested that patients who are especially susceptible to such conditions as cystinuria, gout, and those who have a tendency to form urate stones should not take large doses of vitamin C.

Another claim says large doses of vitamin E - up to fifty times the RDA- have been advocated in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and a host of other ailments. None of the claims for such large doses have been substantiated by adequate testing. Virtually all physicians deplore self-medication with megadoses of vitamin E, although conceding that most people will not be harmed by them.

Vitamin E May Help Prevent Lung Cancer, Study

Posted on Mar 18, 2008 at 01:42 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

A seven year study by researchers at the National Cancer Institute and the National Public Health Service in Helsinski looked at alpha-tocopherol, the active form of vitamin E in the body of about 29,000 older Finnish men who smoke.

Findings published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute showed that smokers who had the highest level of vitamin E in their blood had 19 percent fewer cases of lung cancer than those with the lowest levels. Researchers stressed that this does not necessarily mean that taking a vitamin E supplement can prevent lung cancer, but it does show that the vitamin can work in the body to prevent cancer, researchers added.

Karen Woodson and her coleague researchers wrote : "These findings suggest that high levels of alpha-tocopherol, if present during the early critical stages of tumorigenesis (tumor formation) may inhibit cancer development."

What Is The Difference Between Having A Wheat Or Gluten Intolerance?

Posted on Mar 1, 2008 at 08:32 AM by Evelyn Lim | Comments (0)

You may think that a wheat and gluten intolerance refer to the same thing as many people use the terms interchangeably. In reality, there is a difference between the two as they refer to different ingredients.

While wheat is a grain, gluten is the sticky protein that binds the dough. Gluten is found in wheat and other grains such as barley, rye, malt, and oats. In breads and baked goods, therefore, they come as a package. This being the case, is it possible to have an allergy or intolerance to one and not the other?

New Year Resolution: Select A Detox Diet For Cleansing

Have you made a New Year Resolution to improve your health this year? If you have, are considering going ona detox diet to flush out toxins, accumulated through years of eating unhealthy foods.

Well, there are several forms of detox diets. Here is a breakdown of some of the main ones:

Master Cleanse Diet

The Master Cleanse diet is a combination of maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper mixed in water. This is a gentler detox diet than a water-only fast. The energy in maple syrup is easily absorbed, which regulates the release of toxins as stored fat is converted to energy more slowly. This diet does not produce the healing crisis usually associated with water fasts, and you can continue doing your normal programme of activities.

Scientific studies have proven that fish oil tablet supplements fight cardiovascular disease. They also have other remarkable health benefits as well. In a nutritional study done by the venerable Harvard University in 1999, a regression of arterial plaque build up was documented -- and this was just one of the results the study showed.

I Love Chocolate!

Actually there are now studies out that suggest eating chocolate might be good for you. From what I've read, though, they are talking about the dark chocolate, not the good, creamy, rich milk chocolate we have all grown to love.

OK. I'm sure now you've run to the kitchen and picked up a Snickers to eat while you finish this chapter.

Actually, here are a few facts from the ADA about chocolate.

American Food: Healthy Choices?

Posted on Dec 2, 2007 at 03:23 PM by Christopher Smith

Different countries have different perks and wonders to offer. Take Japan for example. We all know that they produce excellent automobiles. In fact, it's clear to Americans at this point that Japan builds better cars than we do here in the states. But, you don't have to take my word for it. Their automobile sales tell it all. So what do we have here in the good, old US of A? What sets us apart from the numerous other countries? Well, besides our open minds and equal rights, America offers a vast array of exquisite cuisines. In my humble opinion, there's no beating American food. When it comes to eating, we take great taste and variety to a whole new level.

You Are What You Absorb

Health gurus say you are what you eat. But eating right doesn't always mean you get the right nutrients from food. Dr. Earl Mindell, author of the book "Vitamins Bible for the 21st Century" says : "Food processing, storing, and cooking can easily undermine the best nutritious intentions."

So how do we get the most out of what we eat? Here are some healthy reminders from the book of Dr. Mindell :

* Wash, don't soak, fresh vegetables to benefit from the vitamins B and C they contain.

* Make your salads only when you're ready to eat them. Fruits and vegetables cut up and left to stand loss vitamins.

* Use a sharp knife when cutting or shredding fresh vegetables, because vitamins A and C are diminished when vegetable tissues are bruised.

* Don't thaw your frozen vegetables before cooking.

* Broccoli leaves have a higher vitamin A value than the flower buds or stalks.

* Brown, unpolished rice has more vitamins than the white , polished ones.

Detox Diet Tips For The Winter

Posted on Nov 27, 2007 at 08:29 PM by Sandra Kim Leong | Comments (0)

Most people think of doing a detox diet in the spring as a type of internal spring cleaning, but a detox diet in the winter can give you more energy and the added boost you need to get through the colder and shorter days of winter.

One type of detox diet is comprised of fresh fruits and vegetables. A great basis for the diet includes vegetables of many colors. Try to get every color of the rainbow onto your plate. Beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and celery are great vegetables found in abundance in the fall. It is also easy to eat greens out of the garden, even after frost. Kale, mustard greens, spinach, and swiss chard are wonderful with balsamic vinegar. Top off your vegetables with herbs like parsley and basil, not only to add flavor, but to cleanse your body. Add nutrients and flavor with onions and garlic. Squash is an icon of the autumn season and can add wonderful taste and color to your diet. Apples are a fall food and are a great part of a detox diet.

You may recall amino acids from elementary science as "the building blocks of life." In fact, amino acids make up 75% of the body and are required for every chemical reaction and every bodily function. So where do these amino acids come from? Ten amino acids come from our bodies naturally (alanine, asparagines, aspartic acid, cysteine glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, praline, serine and tyrosine). The other ten are derived from properly digested food (arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine). Unfortunately, these acids are not like our cell phone plans - they don't roll over. We need to constantly replenish our essential amino acids supply.

Diet And Nutrional Support For Varicose Veins

Posted on Nov 13, 2007 at 07:50 PM by Sandra Kim Leong | Comments (0)

Most varicose veins do not necessarily require medical treatmen. This condition, which can have quite an ugly appearnace, develops when veins become distended due to weakened vessel walls or one-way valves normally responsible for allowing backflow of blood upwards to the heart malfunctions. As a result, blood pools in clumps in the superficial veins, causing swelling and stretching.

When you have varicose veins, it is not just about the ugly appearance. You also experience a sensation of heaviness in the legs, to deep aching, to severe pain with swollen ankles and feet. Shoes that appear to fit your feet in the morning become too tight in the afternoon. The distended vein is sore, and the skin gets itchy around the affected area. Symptoms get more painful and inflammed as the day progresses, and with prolonged standing.

Although obesity can lead to potentially life–threatening consequences, some physicians only prescribe diet pills as a last resort. The best diet pills available are those that have caused the most significant weight loss to a number of people.

I also mix in approx. ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp pepper and ¼ tsp mustard seed and ¼ tsp salt and finally add in a tsp. of lemon juice. I blend everything together in a food processor until smooth and thick. It makes approx. 1 cup and lasts in my fridge for 4 to 7 days in a sealed container.

Being vegan takes more time, energy and creativity than being a vegetarian does. Vegetarians simply omit the meat and then all is good.

Prostate problems are health issues that are unique to men such as enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, impotency, and faltering libido. Research reveals that about 60 percent of all men between 40 and 59 years of age have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. Molly Siple, author and nutritionist included in her book "Healing Foods For Dummies" , some nutrients that maybe beneficial in lowering the risk of prostate cancer :

1. Taking a daily supplement of 400 IU vitamin E, an antioxidant, can help reduce the incidence of prostate cancer.

2. Selenium, another antioxidant, is almost as effective as Vitamin E in reducing the risk of prostate cancer. This mineral is said to block cell damage, as well as protect the prostate from environmental carcinogens.

3. Vitamin D appears to inhibit the spread of cancer. Sunlight allows the body to synthesize this important nutrient.

Study Says Intake of Folic Acid Protects Any Pregnant Woman And Her Unborn Child Against Serious Birth Defects

Posted on Nov 13, 2006 at 03:19 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Folic acid taken during pregnancy is said to reduce against fatal birth defects of the spine or brain called "neural tube defects", study says.

The study involves the B vitamin folic acid and it's protective effects against developmental defects of the baby's neural tube, that part that becomes the brain and spinal cord three to four weeks after conception, even before women knew they are pregnant. These defects include spina bifida, a serious failure of the spine and back bones to close fully, and anencephaly, a fatal failure of the brain and skull to form properly.

Scientists said an adequate intake of folic acid through the first three months of pregnancy , a supplement of 400 micrograms a day, can prevent most of these neural tube defects. Folic acid is also present naturally in some foods such as green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, brussels sprouts, oranges, peanuts, lentils, black beans, cantaloupes and in organ meats such as liver.

Plus, it is one of the cleanest fruits due to its naturally protective feel.

Bananas contain the highest level of starch and dietary fiber among other fruits. That's why even a single banana can give a feeling of fullness, a great help if you are weight conscious. What more can you ask from a fruit that's fat-free, sodium-free, cholesterol free yet so satisfying?

Give Your Stomach a Rest

Without doubt one of the most overlooked reasons why so many people today suffer from fatigue is their eating habits. They may have no desire or appetite for food, but the "clock" dictates when it's time to eat, so they eat.

People have been brainwashed into believing they have to eat three or four large meals each day, whether their body actually needs the food or not. Do animals look at a clock to govern their eating habit? Certainly not. They eat when they are hungry and hence reap the benefit of living long and healthy lives.

Heartburn is what happens when the proper order of things between the esophagus and the stomach doesn't happen for whatever reason. The esophagus is a tube that allows the passage of food from the mouth to the stomach. There is a valve at the bottom of the esophagus that is supposed to close once the food has left the esophagus and entered the stomach, the purpose of this valve is to prevent acids from the stomach from entering the esophagus. Heartburn is the experience of that very thing happening.

Soft Drinks Contaminated by Benzene

Posted on Sep 16, 2006 at 03:45 PM by Dave Kettner | Comments (0)

Bacon cheeseburgers and French fries drip with weight gain, increased cholesterol levels, and higher blood pressure. But what if further research findings made these foods look safe?

In some way or other, a large part of the American diet proves unhealthy and even harmful. Conscientious meal planning becomes more and more needed and desired. For one, many foods contain high levels of fat and sugar. The fact that these foods monopolize the fast-food options needed in a quick-pace society exasperates this problem further. Secondly, modern food-processing methods rob essential nutrients from once healthy foods. Thirdly, with pesticide remnants and artificial flavors and colorings, chemicals prove to be just another ingredient in the recipe. Unfortunately though, the danger does not stop here. Other, even more alarming, food contents insidiously permeate meals every day. With a large percentage of America remaining uninformed, food itself has stolen control of people's own bodies. Poison may actually be included on the menu too.

For some people being on a diet means being tired and lethargic. It's times like these that some people may be more likely to reach for chips, chocolate or soda. However, these types of foods are absorbed so quickly by the body that it causes your body to think that it has run out of fuel soon after eating them and it's not long before you begin to crave more of these snacks again. Often these foods offer a quick rush of energy; however they don't help the body deal with the cause of energy deprivation.

But even though we may try to supplement our diets, we still may not be getting everything our bodies truly need. If your body is not able to absorb the nutrients from the supplements that you take, then you are still deficient of much needed nutrition.

Unfortunately, many of the vitamins and supplements on the market today do not get absorbed by the body. Vitamins and supplements in solid form actually can pass through the body only being absorbed 10 to 20 percent. So most of these supplements that people think they are taking actually end up being flushed away.

Bananas a Trigger for Migraine Headaches?

Enjoy a delicious dessert of banana split or even that yummy banana chocolate cake but get a migraine headache thereafter? Also, do you notice that it is true almost every time you had some juicy bananas? Can it be possible that bananas trigger migraine headaches?

First, let me first describe the symptoms and characteristics of a migraine headache. Migraine headaches seem to follow a general pattern – from prodrome to postdrome. In most cases, the patient may experience a throbbing pain in any one side of the head (sometimes it spreads to both sides as well), and the condition is usually accompanied by nausea or sometimes vomiting. A small percentage of migraine sufferers also experience “aura” – zigzag lines, halos or blurred vision – hours before an impending attack.

Diet Recipes Can Harm Your Diet

Posted on Jul 3, 2006 at 11:08 PM by Kathryn Martyn Smith | Comments (0)

I recently read "The Ultimate Low Fat Baking Cookbook." This is a huge, glossy-photo coffee table books, so I start flipping through and first thing I noticed the photos. They were taken close up to make it appear the cakes and slices of pie were normal sized, but if you looked closer you could see that was not the case. These were Barbie doll sized portions! Every cake recipe made the equivalent of a one-layer round yet served eight. You do the math. Divide it in half, then again into quarters, and finally into eighths and you've got some dinky portions. So, naturally the calorie count, fat content, carb content, and the sodium are low, but that's not a diet recipe.

That's why I've usually shunned these cookbooks. Yes, they do make some substitutions to bring down the overall fat content in the recipe, but let's be realistic. When's the last time you made a batch of cookies that served 18?

Natural Detox Using Herbs
by Sandra Kim Leong

Many are embracing the idea of detox and cleansing. It is believed that an overload of toxins in our bodies results in a sluggishness in the performance of our body organs. When our body organs are not functioning properly, our immune system breaks down and disease and illness strike. By detoxifying, waste and toxins get flushed out of our bodies. Our organs, especially those that are involved in the process of waste elimination, such as the liver, kidney, skin and colon are rejuvenated and can then work optimally again.

It is possible to detox through the use of herbs. In fact, it is believed that herbs are better than synthetic substances as the former have little side effects. The following list explains some western herbs commonly used for detoxification and why they work.

Cost of Convenience Packaging

I saw a new display of convenient six bars to the box Odwalla bars, which I like, so I was thinking of getting them. Then I noticed their size, they seemed smaller than what I usually buy. The box contained six 1-ounce bars, so I checked and lo-and-behold the regular bars I get are 2.1 ounce. So I almost paid 66 cents per ounce, and when usually I'm paying closer to 41 cents an ounce.
