Prostatitis : A Case Using Alternative Methods

Posted on Mar 19, 2009 at 03:47 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

I read this one from a remarkable book, "Health and Healing" by Dr. Andrew Weil, a medical doctor and an expert on alternative medicine. In this book, he provided case examples from his own experience to illustrate how alternative medicine can be integrated with conventional or allopathic medicine practice.

One case example concerns a young man in his mid-twenties, suffering from prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland). This patient worked as a nurse on the urology ward of a large urban hospital when he developed chronic prostatitis. When this man's last treatment with antibiotics failed ( he had had three recurrences) and a senior doctor from the hospital from his ward recommended Prostatectomy (surgery to remove the gland), the patient came to Dr. Weil and wanted a second opinion.

The Curative Powers Of Scents

Posted on Feb 11, 2009 at 03:14 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

A room full of sweetly scented flowers and herbs is enough to make anyone smile and feel healthy, observed Reginald Farrar, one of the finest horticultural writers we had for decades.

The association between fragrance and healing has sustained itself for centuries. History tells us that Hippocrates and other ancient doctors classed perfumes with medicines and prescribed them for nervous diseases. Theophrastus, writing several centuries before the time of Christ wrote a long dissertation entitled "Concerning Odours." Here's some excerpts on the discussion of "the medicinal properties of certain perfumes":

"Megaleion is believed to relieve the inflammation caused by any wound, and rose-perfume to be excellent for the ears...(Iris) perfume acts as a laxative on the bowels because of it's healing quality... In general iris-perfume, as well as others, has medicinal properties. And the explanation in all cases, to put it generally, lies in the ...properties of astringency and heating; for it is the spice possessing these properties that are medicinal."

Low Libido And How To Increase It

Posted on Nov 2, 2008 at 04:18 PM by Reuben Oyeyele | Comments (0)

Sexual desire is most probably an interaction between hormones and a woman's emotional, physical, and psychological situation at any given moment.

Libido has been considered to be closely tied to the level of testosterone in the body, a low level of this major sex hormone may result in a low libido both in men and women. In order to increase libido, a solution may be to increase the level of testosterone in the body.

Erectile dysfunction, another cause of sexual problems in men, is not necessarily related to loss of desire-though it can certainly affect libido.

There are different methods if increasing libido but the most important is to address the problem with the attitude of healthy living. Certain states of the mind are known to affect sexual desire and libido. A good example is stress or fear.

While in modern times, people look for libido enhancement products, a more efficient method is to use supplements that nature itself has provided in form of herbs.

Avocado is high in vitamin B6, which is a potent hormone regulator. Apparently, the Aztecs called the avocado tree the testicle tree. Avocados also contain vitamin B6, which increases male hormone production and potassium, which aids in regulating the female thyroid gland, enhancing a woman's sex drive. In addition, avocados are high in antioxidants, fibre and monounsaturated fat, which is believed to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes as well as increase libido.

Among those herbs suitable and appropriate in how to increase libido, include such ones as akarkara, salad misri, shilajit, kohinoor gold, Maca, horny goat weed, and many others. Healthy men who take Maca have also been shown to have increased semen volume, increased sperm counts, and enhanced sperm motility.

Cnidium This herb has been used for centuries in China to increase libido and performs two main functions. Firstly, it increases levels of nitric oxide and secondly, it helps pump blood to the extremities and that includes the genitals. Cnidium seeds are one of the most effective natural remedy to increase sex drive, boost libido and to treat impotence and erectile dysfunction.

Recent medical tests have indicated that Ginseng promotes natural and increased testosterone levels. Healthy men who take maca have also been shown to have increased semen volume, increased sperm counts, and enhanced sperm motility.

Chocolate can also increase libido. Chocolate that melts in your mouth, which contains cocoa butter, one of the only fats that melts at body temperature. That sensual feeling of the pulling of chocolate on your tongue, Hopkins says, triggers the same "Mmm" and "Ahh" sounds as lovemaking.

Testosterone decline may also be caused by medication. Men who take testosterone to overcome erectile dysfunction risk atrophy of the testicles. Testosterone is available by prescription only. An over the counter hormones, such as DHEA, converts into testosterone and thus has a positive influence on libido.

Women who have undergone a hysterectomy, for any reason, may also experience low sexual desire because the female hormones are suddenly depleted. Many women take medications (hormone replacement therapy or female libido pills) to replace the loss of hormones, which will usually increase libido, sexual desire, and sexual response. Women have been conditioned to be so quiet about sexual issues that the world of female libido enhancement has only recently cropped up. Female libido enhancement and womens sexuality in general was a little bit ignored compared to male impotence problems until now.

Water : You Are What You Drink

Posted on Sep 15, 2008 at 11:59 PM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

How you drink is as important as how you eat. Yet, it's quite true to say that, most of us simply don't drink enough. Few of us realize the harm that too little water can do.

Dr. Abram Hoffer, one of the world's leading experts in orthomolecular medicine and psychiatry, believes that long-term lack of water plays a role in senility and Alzheimer's disease. He was one of the doctors responsible for introducing 'water wagons' into the mental hospitals of his native Canada where senile patients are given no less than fifteen glasses of water a day. Many cases of improved memory function have been reported.

Dr. Hoffer, also a compelling lecturer, frequently greets his audience with this comment : 'I'm going to give you the benefit of thirty years of research, but most of you won't remember what I have to say because you didn't drink enough water today. Lack of water affects your memory and concentration !' He then gives a ten minute adjournment while the delegates stampede to the water coolers.

Many people are now wanting to know more about detoxification. It is considered an alternative healing practice, since conventional doctors do not swear by it. Detoxification is the process of removing toxins or contaminants from the blood, organs, and fatty tissues. The Benefits of Blue Light Acne Therapy

Posted on Jun 17, 2008 at 09:51 AM by Darlene loeffel | Comments (0)

There are many different benefits associated with blue light acne therapy. For individuals who have suffered through the "traditional" acne treatments with little to no success, this type of light therapy is considered to be a breakthrough and a safe alternative to all of those chemical based acne treatments out there that prove to provide little to no relief. It has been discovered in clinical settings that acne occurs as a result of a type of bacteria that is referred to as "P.acnes".

When blue light acne therapy is implemented, it gets right to the bacteria that are directly responsible for the onset of skin irritations, pimples, and boils that are commonly associated with acne. Unlike traditional acne treatments, this treatment does not work to simply control the symptoms of acne; it works to actually eliminate the overall cause of acne. This is the first benefit to this treatment choice. Continue reading "The Benefits of Blue Light Acne Therapy"

Are Herbal Supplements Safe?

Herbal supplements are herbs or plants added to the diet for heath purposes. Although they're not considered drugs or medicines, some herbal supplements work the same way as drugs and can have harmful as well as helpful effects.

Herbal supplements are not regulated the same way as drugs. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates herbal and other dietary supplements as foods, not as drugs. Meaning, they don't have to meet the same high standards as drugs for proof of safety, effectiveness, and quality.

The following are safety tips and precautions on how to take herbal supplements from Nursing 2004 Herbal Medicine Handbook (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2004) :

Nail Polish Remover: Why Non-Acetone Remover Wipes Are Your Safest Bet

Posted on Mar 26, 2008 at 04:47 PM by Kristie Brown | Comments (0)

Women love to look beautiful. Make-up has been a staple of this practice and society for as long as living memory. Even the most uncivil societies on this planet use make-up in one form or another. Nail polish is but one example of how women attempt to add a bit of flair to their appearance. Nail polish, like other make-ups, can be harsh on the skin and the ways that we go about removing it can hurt the derma, or surface of the skin.

Nail polish remover is alcohol based and can, and usually does, hurt the fingernail. non-acetone based, nail polish remover wipes are a much safer option.

The alcohol base in commercial nail polish remover can dry out the nail causing it to turn white or crack. These removers also can cause damage to the cuticle of the finger leaving it red, agitated, and hurting. There is also a risk of one being allergic to the harsh astringent found in them.

Life-Saving Help To Do If You Have A Heart Attack

Posted on Mar 23, 2008 at 09:39 PM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

What should you do if you are alone and experiencing a sudden heart attack? The book "Natural Remedies Encyclopedia" has this suggestion that may save a life : "You can help yourself by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously." Here's what the book tells us on how to do it :

" Take a deep breath before each cough. The cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing
sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds, without
letup, until help arrives or until the heart is beating normally again."

These deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs, and the coughing squeezes the heart and keeps the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims may be helped to survive the trip to the hospital.

Natural Treatment For Warts

A natural treatment for warts can also be used to help remove the unsightly appearance on the skin. Many older children get warts. It is the result of a viral infection affecting the outermost layer of skin or mucous membranes. The virus enters the body through a cut on the skin of the affected but may take up to any time between one and eight months to make its appearance. Warts manifest in the skin and can spread to other parts of the body. They tend to spread as they are scratched or rubbed.

Warts may not go away so easily. Sometimes, they reappear after treatment. However, do not worry; most warts are not infectious or harmful. The only exception is genital warts, which are sexually transmittable.

The Different Types Of Detox Diets

Detox diets come in many forms, and some of them include the following:

Master Cleanse Detox Diet

The Master Cleanse diet is a combination of maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper mixed in water. This is a gentler detox diet than a water-only fast. The energy in maple syrup is easily absorbed, which regulates the release of toxins as stored fat is converted to energy more slowly. This diet does not produce the healing crisis usually associated with water fasts, and you can continue doing your normal programme of activities.

Digestive diseases have been linked to the accumulation of fecal matter in the colon. Inadequate fiber intake is often cited as the reason for incomplete evacuation of feces during bowel movements. Over time a certain quantity of such matter will latch on to the walls of the intestines. At the same time, claims that more than 20 to 40 pounds of feces may be found in the colon at any one time appear to be mostly exaggerated. A more realistic number may be one to perhaps three pounds, depending on your height and weight.

Acupuncture For Detoxification

Acupuncture for detoxification is one of the most beneficial uses of this major component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The principle of acupuncture, as with the rest of TCM, lies on the balance of Qi (chi), the vital energy that nourishes and harmonises the functions of the body.

It is helpful to look at the original purpose for which acupuncture was developed. The ancient Chinese physicians believed that "A superior healer is one who treats a disease before it shows symptoms, while an inferior one treats a disease only after it has manifested pain or discomfort," (Inner Classic of the Yellow Emperor, 100 B.C.). The ancients well knew that prevention was more valuable than the treatment of a disease. It is thus easy to understand why you can use acupuncture for detoxification.

The liver is one of the most important organs of our body and we need liver detox at least once a year to ensure that it functions properly. The liver produces over 13,000 different chemicals and 2,000 various enzymes used in the body.

Its primary role is to process and remove toxins carried in the bloodstream. In peak condition, it works fast, filtering up to two litres of blood per minute. Liver enzymes break apart the structure of toxic molecules to reduce their toxicity.

Massage School Competition

In Feb. of this year, they also report that the number of students enrolled in massage school has decreased. While this can be due to many reasons, I want to address one that I have recently come across online.

Most massage schools websites are so poorly created that when anyone searches for the words "massage school, some city" that the top listings are not any schools themselves but are the listings of many different directories that are charging massage schools for listings. The actual websites for the massage schools are lost on the web. Massage schools are being held hostage by the many online school directories and link farms.

Drinking warm herbal teas during the day or evening, while you are indoors, provides both warmth and comfort. Additionally, herbal teas can also help you cleanse your body.

How To Overcome Seasonal Allergies

Posted on Nov 17, 2007 at 12:40 AM by Evelyn Lim | Comments (0)

Some of us do not look forward to the upcoming season as we know that this is the period where we get allergy attacks the most often. While the end of the year is often associated with the holiday season for others, those of us with allergy symptoms can feel really down. We should, therefore, take our seasonal allergies seriously so that they affect our quality of life as little as possible.

Allergy sufferers get the most symptoms during fall and spring time. In the fall in North America, ragweed blooms from mid August until a hard freeze, usually in November. Fall also brings mold spores because of rotting leaves and plants. There are also trees and plants that pollinate in the fall. Finally, if you have allergies to dust mites, you may find yourself experiencing more symptoms in the fall when the house is closed and the exposure to dust increases. Spring allergies can result from the many pollinating plants and the mold produced with the spring thaw.

Secrets of the connection Between Health and Astrology

In this chaotic and materialistic world we can thank Dr. George W. Carey for giving us a priceless key to mental and physical health. He wrote a small book entitled "The Relation of the Mineral Salts of the Body to the Signs of the Zodiac;" circa 1900. We are now in the Age of Aquarius. Hew healing methods. Chemicals and surgery are out dated.

The heritage of all humans on the planet is perfection; perfect health. Our solar system just entered the age of Aquarius, which is the human sign. The sign of the truth about man. This is the age of truth. Only truth matters not opinions. Know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Know the truth and heal yourself.

The process necessary to the attainment of perfection was given to us by Dr. William Schuessler in his biochemic system of medicine. The key was supplied by Dr. Carey.

Herbs & Fertility: Would You Like To Get Pregnant Without Any Unnatural Means?

People have been using herbs to deal with just about any type of condition for centuries. Traditional medicine like the traditional Chinese medicine or the Native American medicine, knew and made good use of potent herbal tonics to cure or lighten a range of conditions, which includes infertility.

Herbs are a wonderful choice to heal infertility because they contain only natural substances, eradicating the need to fill your body with detrimental artificial hormones and chemicals. Herbal fertility tonics naturally balance your body's energy by promoting the production of hormones involved in reproduction, thus increasing sexual performance and neutralizing detrimental toxins that lead to a ineffective reproductive capacity.

Heal Thyself With Homeopathy

Posted on Nov 11, 2007 at 10:29 AM by | Comments (0)

Good morning,

After five or six weeks I was coming along fine. The Bach Flower Remedies were helping me eliminate my fears and anxieties.

My little trailer in the mountains with its clean air and water was working miracles with my overall health and mental outlook.

Isn't it interesting that at the turn of the century, before the AMA, doctors would send people to the mountains and/or the seashore to recover their health. No poison chemical formulas or knives.

I was still strongly adhering to my organic diet. But sometimes the habits of 55 years would take hold of me and I would indulge myself with food that I knew was not the best for my health.

I was using my Schussler Cell Salts daily for maintenance and prevention.

Now, since I decided that I would take no more drugs in my life, not even aspirin, I needed to find a product that would replace them.

It applies to what you eat emotionally (movies, art, TV and relationships). It applies to what you eat spiritually (your religious beliefs).

Fifteen years ago, when I first started my quest for better health I made major decisions and changes in what I ate.

Primarily I was concerned with the three major building blocks of good health. FOOD - AIR - WATER.

BACH FLOWER REMEDIES

In case you are wondering how I sustained myself through this dark period ... I sold books on and off the net. I had an extensive library and although it hurt to sell them I needed the money. Now after 15 years I have managed to replace most of them.

So I went to work, for hours at a time, surfing the internet. I found two very important trains of thought. One presented by the medical doctors and one presented by the naturalists, chiropractors, nutritionalists and alternate health devotees.

The main difference, it semed to me, was that the medical doctors treated the effects of illnesses. While the others treated the causes. I was interested in the causes.

Menopause: What about Hormone Replacement?

Posted on Oct 18, 2007 at 03:26 PM by | Comments (0)

During peri-menopause, your doctor may suggest birth control to ease the discomfort of severe cramping of significantly heavy menstrual periods. The birth control will work to keep your cycles more regular and consistent.

Birth control may also help with symptoms such as hot flashes. Birth control can, however, hide the actual arrival of menopause. If you think you might have reached menopause, stop taking your pills for a little while in order to see if your cycle returns. If you were taking the pills in order to prevent pregnancy it is important that you use alternate birth control for a while in order to eliminate the possibility of something else ending your cycles. It is not considered menopause until you have gone a full 12 months without a menstrual cycle.

How to Get Rid of a Sore Throat?

Posted on Jan 12, 2007 at 12:22 AM by Saundra Jackson | Comments (6)

A sore throat is one of the most common of medical complaints. It is an inflammation or infection of the pharynx accompanied with discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. A sore throat is contagious in most cases and can be spread through coughing and sneezing.

A sore throat is a symptom, not a disease. I know what it's like when the glands beneath your jaw begin to get sore, warning you that a sore throat is about to set in. In many cases, a sore throat is the first indication that you're getting sick.

A sore throat is one of the most common reasons patients go to the doctor's office. A sore throat is a common condition, and usually not a very serious one. It is a common symptom that ranges in severity from simple scratchiness to severe pain. A doctor should be consulted if your sore throat is a recurring problem not associated with a viral or bacterial infection.

But how do you know which sore throat is a strep throat infection. For example, a very common cause of sore throat is a bacterium called Streptococcus. In general, the more cold like symptoms you have, the less likely it is that your sore throat is a strep infection.

Can Cranberry Juice Treat Urinary Tract Infections?

Posted on Nov 23, 2006 at 03:50 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Cranberries are popular not only as a juice or for it's smooth berry sauces but also as a herbal remedy. Many have heard that the juice can protect and treat urinary tract infections or UTI. Cranberry juice is said to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the urinary tract and lessen the odor of stale urine.

A study published in 1923, cranberry juice was found to lower urine acidity on the premise that bacteria causing UTI's do not grow as well in more acidic environments. However, by the 1980's, it became clear that cranberry juice did not consistently lower urine acidity but it was found to produce compounds that can prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract. This action prevents bacteria from replicating and growing.

The first controlled study to test the therapeutic utility of supplementing with cranberry was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1994. Elderly women were given a drink of 0 oz of cranberry juice per day for six months. Findings showed supplemented subjects had fewer UTI's than those placebo subjects drinking a similar-tasting red drink. Another controlled study of sexually active women with UTI symptom's, antibiotic therapy for ten days along with 400 mg. of cranberry was significantly better than antibiotic therapy alone.

There appears to be no cure for eczema. The conventional method most people often use to treat eczema is with the use of topical applications to provide relief of your dry skin and prescription drugs to reduce itching. You will also be advised by your doctor to undertake preventative measures such as avoiding triggers. Allergens can be anything from pollens, dust, and drugs to food items or climate. Papaya As Food And Medicine

Posted on Nov 3, 2006 at 01:49 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

One of the fruit-bearing plants grown in our backyard is the papaya plant. It is a tree-like herb that grows up to ten metres high, and the fruits are widely available all year round especially in tropical countries like the Philippines. Ripe papaya is always a regular dessert on the table. The unripe fruit can be pickled in cider vinegar or used to tenderize meat to make it more digestible. Now science has proved the value of papaya and researchers have discovered powerful agents of this tropical fruit.

Foremost Russian molecular biologist Dr. Ludmila Korkina , expounded the merits of papaya as a functional food used in studies in the Russian space program before the international community of space medical scientists. In her paper, she explained how papaya was used by cosmonauts during simulated flight conditions indicated favorable results. These tests measured the performance of their cardio-vascular and respiratory systems and their blood chemistry when the functional food was used. The test also included the results of their psycho-emotional reactions under simulated flight conditions. The results confirmed that papaya taken as a food supplement helped greatly in maintaining the well-being of the subjects under stressful flights conditions.

The Therapeutic Power Of Laughter

Posted on Oct 22, 2006 at 10:39 PM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

We all know the proverb, "Laughter is the best medicine." Ancient people knew the healing power of maintaining a positive attitude during illness. Today, physicians recognize the power of humor and laughter during times of stress and pain. In some hospitals, for example, patients are treated to Disney cartoons and Marx Brothers comedies. Others bring in clowns to visit hospitalized children. Sick people are encouraged to read books by humorists that tickle their fancy.

We have examples of how people used humor and laughter during times of stress, and even in the most desperate situations. The famed poet Walter De La Mare, during a serious illness was visited by a friend and asked whether he would like fruit or flowers. He was reported to have replied, "Too late for fruit, too soon for flowers."

The Basics of Homeopathy

Posted on Oct 20, 2006 at 01:54 PM by Paul Strachan | Comments (0)

Homeopathy is a system of medicinal treatment founded by Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician. He published a paper in 1796 in which he promulgated his principle that "likes are cured by likes". This principle is known as "Law of Similars". Hahnemann claimed that quinine, a medicine widely used for successful treatment of malaria, produced symptoms of malaria in a healthy person. The patients of malaria were treated with a medicine which created the same symptoms as those created by the disease. The observations with quinine and other medicines led Hahnemann to his "Law of Similars".

Chiropractic Therapy, More Than Just Moving Bones...

Posted on Oct 20, 2006 at 04:04 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Scientific studies by medical doctors and independent researchers have found time and time again that for lower back pain, there's nothing better than chiropractic treatment. These studies have found that it's cheaper and there are no side effects which more and more people don't want to risk drug side effects anymore.

What they put up with instead are sessions ranging from three to four minutes to as much as one half hour of highly trained and specific hands-on manipulations (moving many bones) and adjustments (moving just one bone)made on the spinal column when necessary.

"Actually, theres more to spines and chipropractic than just aches and pains," says Dr. Harvey Leister, a chiropractic practitioner . Chiropractors are more nerve than bone doctors and are concerned primarily with the unimpeded workings of the nervous system. Irritation on the nerves, which are normally found between spinal bones, can lead to problems with the organs, can manifest as a nagging headache, spasmic backache, killer ulcer, or chronic ashma attack.

Personal Growth through Sacrifice and Discipline

Sacrifice of self to self. What does it mean? It means letting go of the old self for a new and better self. This is a hard thing to do as we get comfortable with whom and what we are. Our old self is familiar, seems safe, and is relatively effortless to maintain.

Change takes us beyond our boundaries, challenges us to what is not familiar, and forces us to give up well-worn habits. It requires effort and sacrifice of things we have learned to enjoy. Those are things that are pleasant but stand in the way of highest good.

Garlic As A Natural Antibiotic

Posted on Oct 13, 2006 at 05:03 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Both ancient herbalist and modern-day scientists believe that garlic has anti-viral and anti-fungal properties and has been used to treat the wounded. Research has shown how the herb works as a therapeutic substance. At Sandoz Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland, researchers isolated garlic's antibiotic compound, alliin, which when chewed, chopped or crushed, an enzyme transforms alliin into a powerful antibiotic called allicin. It may not be as powerful as penicillin and other modern drugs, but unlike them it attacks viruses, fungi, as well as bacteria.

In Russia, this bulb has been known as "Russian Penicillin" because of it's wide use in the countryside for healing respiratory disorders. Inhaling the vapors of steamed garlic bulbs was said to do the trick. Another remedy using garlic oil is being promoted by Jeane Rose, author of the "Herbs and Things", to effectively cure chronic sinus problems.

Garlics are also said to play hero roles with such killer diseases as heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure and cancer. In studies conducted in the US and Pakistan, consumption of garlic was seen to have reduced the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood especially when combined with low fat, low calorie diet. In a separate study, two researchers from Bastry College in Seattle discovered that subjects who took the equivalent of 18 mg. of encapsulated garlic oil a day (2-3 large cloves of garlic) reduced their serum cholesterol level while raising their HDL's, the "good cholesterol".

Therapeutic Effects of Aloe Vera Against Diseases

Posted on Oct 12, 2006 at 05:45 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (1)

We used to have an aloe vera plant in the backyard of our house. If we were burnt by spattered hot oil from the frying pan, we were sent out to pluck a leaf of the aloe vera and rub the sap on the burn to soothe the pain.

Now clinical researchers published in reputable journals reveal that aloe vera has healing effects against diseases. Here's some of the studies with their findings on this cactus-like plant :

* Aloe helps in healing wounds

A study published in the Journal of the American pediatric Medical Association found that both oral and topical aloe preparations speeds up wound healing. It was given at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight daily for two months or as a twenty five percent cream applied directly to the wounds. Aloe vera was found to have positive effects in both groups, compared to the control group, which did not receive aloe vera.

* Aloe protects skin damage

Aloe vera may help protect against skin damage from irradiation, according to researchers at Hoshi University in Japan. Published in the journal Yakugaku Zasshi, the report found aloe vera to be an effective antioxidant, mopping up the free radicals caused by radiation. It was also shown to protect two of the body's healing substances, superoxide desmutase ( an antioxidant enzyme) and glutathione (an amino acid which stimulates the immune system).

* Aloe vera can help in treating inflammatory bowel disease
According to a study in the Journal of Alternative Medicine, patients given aloe vera taken orally showed significant improvement after one week with 100 percent improvement in the diarrhea, 40 percent with normal and regular bowels, and 30 percent showing increased energy.

* Aloe vera against diabetes

A reduction in the blood sugar level average of 45 percent was notedin a group of noninsulin dependent diabetic patients given aloe vera extract daily for 14 weeks. This was reported in the journal Hormone Research. The researchers did not note any changes in the total weight of the patients. There was no control group in this study.

10 Good Reasons To Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Posted on Oct 10, 2006 at 04:39 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

A good human diet should consist of fresh fruits and vegetables. Why? Here are ten good reasons the American Institute for Cancer Research, Washington,D.C., has compiled :

* Cancer prevention topped the list. Vegetables and fruits are rich in antioxidants substances shown to provide protection against free-radicals (reactive substances that damage cells and initiate cancer) and other phytochemicals that help to detoxify cancer-causing substances.

* To keep trim is number 2 on the list. Many vegetables contain 50 calories or fewer for a whole cup, while only five potato chips or one small cookie has the same number of calories. If you satisfy your appetite with hearty servings of vegetables and fruits, hunger won't be a problem and you will eat smaller portions of higher-calorie meats and desserts.

* Prevent heart disease is number 3. Eating more vegetables and fruits while cutting back on meat and dairy can help you limit heart-damaging saturated fat and cholesterol in your diet. The antioxidants and certain other phytochemicals in these foods also help prevent fatty deposits from forming in blood vessels. They also provide fiber, which helps lower blood cholesterol. The B vitamins are also present that helps lower blood levels of homocysteine, high levels of which are a risk factor for heart disease.

You may think that the ideal cleaning for gallstones is gallbladder cleansing. However, there are reasons why liver cleansing is the more ideal method to take for removal of gallstones.

A very important function of liver is the bile production. Bile is transported from the liver to the common bile duct through a series of tubes. The common bile duct is attached to the gallbladder, which stores the bile. The gallbladder releases bile for the digestion of fats. Gallstones can therefore be present in the tubes in liver, common bile duct and in gallbladder.

Constipation has fast become a common complaint among many Americans. In fact, annually, an average 4 million Americans say that they experience constipation. Constipation is triggered by insufficient water and fiber intake.

Constipation is the irregular movement of bowels. When one experiences constipation, stools are hard and this leads to difficulty in passing them.

The Magic Of Chanting

Posted on Aug 21, 2006 at 09:22 PM by Mary Desaulniers | Comments (0)

In what way is chanting like a cup of blueberries or a bowl of chicken soup? Other than the fact that your mom has always said these are good for you, there is incontrovertible proof that all have the ability to raise immunoglobulin levels—a marker of immune system functioning.

Chanting has healing properties, says Dr. Robert Gass, author of Chanting: Discovering Spirit in Sound. Studies have shown that breast tumors shrink through chanting several hours each day for a month. Researchers taking samples of children’s saliva before they sang showed that children who sang experienced definite physiological changes; their immune system was boosted by song.

Recent medical research shows that chanting increases oxygen levels in cells, lowers blood pressure, releases endorphins, reduces stress-related hormones and boosts production of interleukin-1 (protein associated with blood and platelet production). But there is more, chanting shifts our consciousness, allows us to vibrate internally and collectively and experience what Quantum physicists call the implicate order of waves and frequencies.

The New Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

Posted on Aug 20, 2006 at 02:36 PM by Mary Desaulniers | Comments (3)

We are bombarded on all fronts with new anti-wrinkle treatments and new sophisticated skin regimen that are supposed to take years off the face—microdermabrasion, botox injections, face lifts and laser resurfacing. More than ever, we are harnessing the powers of technology to create a Brave New World of ageless boomers. And while I have no objections to wanting to look young (who doesn’t), I do think that being young is more a state of mind than a state of “looks.” Looks can be artificially manipulated; a state of mind can only be cultivated.

Even the word “cultivation” suggests that the process of staying young takes time. And time is something our society seems intent on making dispensable. Yet the best things in life take time. Think of your children through the lenses of the family album; it is the changes tabulated in those pictures that make them so rich in character and experience now. Time deepens the experience; time ages the moment by filling it with layers made accessible through memories. Without time, we are like ants—filled only with a pale and surface instant. Living the moment is a call for cultivating the layers of time within the moment.

And so with the face....

Stressed? Have a Talk with Your Body

Posted on Aug 20, 2006 at 02:21 PM by Mary Desaulniers | Comments (0)

Ilana Rubenfeld Ph.D knows first hand what having a conversation with your body means. A gifted violinist at the Julliard School of Music, Rubenfeld was well on her way to become the first woman conductor in the music scene when a debilitating back spasm cut short her music career. It was at that point that Rubenfeld turned to the resources of her body and transformed trauma into triumph by embarking on a personal mission to look for answers in the body’s wisdom. The result is The Listening Hand: The Rubenfeld Synergy Method of Talk and Touch which made her a world-recognized pioneer in integrating psychotherapy, body work and intuition. “You can learn to develop ‘listening hands’ in order to ‘hear’ changes in the body," she says. Talking with your body is the first step towards healing and integration.

Your body is naturally designed to detox and cleanse on its own. However, if it is laden with toxins, the organs that are involved in the elimination process cannot perform their normal cleansing jobs. In addition to naturally-occuring toxins, it is estimated that more than 400 man-made chemicals as well as heavy metals permeate the body of a person today. An over accumulation of toxins in the body can cause chronic health ailments including constipation, skin disorders, bad breath, kidney failure and a poor immune system. It is therefore very necessary for us to help detox and cleanse the body from these toxins and pollutants.

Green home products are products that are non-toxic and provide for a safer home environment, a healthy family and a safer world.

Juice fasting can be a fun and creative way to cleanse your body. A combination of fruit and vegetable juice is mostly sweet and you can create some interesting recipes. There are many benefits to juicing, especially if you prepare them yourself:

1. If drank fresh, the juice is full of live enzymes, which is helpful the body. As such, try to drink the juice as soon as it is made. Do not leave the juice in the open for more than 15 minutes.

2. Unlike coming out from a packet, the juice is fresh and not pasteurized. Pasteurization may have its conveniences but has sadly resulted in nutritionally dead foods. During pasteurization, high heat is used and this destroys the vital nutrients within the juice.

Posted on Jul 31, 2006 at 08:57 PM by Sandra Kim Leong | Comments (0)

Your body should naturally detox on its own through the organs involved in the elimination process. These organs include your colon, kidneys, liver and skin. However, today’s unhealthy diet and lifestyle make that process difficult. Many people therefore resort to internal body cleansing to help the body get rid of waste products and toxins. A detox treatment is designed to help the body eliminate stored toxins and strengthen the organs involved in this process. By helping to unclog waste, the organs can take a break and find themselves working optimally again after the treatment.

Kidney Cleansing: A Basic Understanding

Posted on Jul 29, 2006 at 07:35 AM by Sandra Kim Leong | Comments (0)

Every day, your kidneys process the blood and helps to sift out waste products (like mercury, copper, arsenic-bound chemicals and other toxins) and extra water. The waste and extra water become urine. The urine then flows to your bladder through the ureters. Your bladder stores urine until you go to the bathroom. When your kidneys become overloaded with toxins, diseases of the kidneys and bladder can happen as you are unable to discharge the waste and urine from your body.

When you do kidney cleansing, you help to cleanse the toxin built-up from the kidneys and the bladder. A cleansed kidney works optimally in its function to filter out pollutants, drugs, chemicals and other harmful materials. When you do a kidney cleanse, you also help to eliminate urinary tract infections and dissolves kidney stones.

Acne and Green Tea

Posted on Jul 26, 2006 at 09:31 PM by Bruce Walls | Comments (1)

Natural remedies have become very popular in recent years. People have stopped looking at the expensive medications and creams to cure various conditions, and have started looking at remedies found closer to home. This is, in part, because they are less expensive, but they are also on hand and easily obtained.

Acne is a common condition in teens and adults alike, and is no exception to the theory that a home remedy can sometimes be better. If it's worked for many years, why wouldn't it work now? One such remedy believed to aid in the healing of acne is green tea.

Green tea is used by the Chinese as a traditional medicine to treat many ailments including acne and to improve general well-being. But does it provide an effective herbal alternative to modern medication? The answer seems to be 'Yes'. There are only two herbal treatments that are known to be effective in treating acne and green tea is one of them.

While many teas are fermented, green tea instead, is steamed soon after being picked so as to prevent the oxidation of its leaves. This helps to retain the active substances the leaves contain. Camellia Sinensis, or as we know it, green tea extract, contains a high content of Polyphenol, along with other important antioxidants.

Green tea can serve many purposes, and it is recommended for a number of reasons. It acts as an anti-bacterial substance, decreasing hormonal activity. Since acne is often caused by hormones, which produce excess oil and clog pores, thereby causing blemishes, green tea could be a good remedy for this problem.

The antioxidents contained in green tea have been shown as very beneficial to acne prevention because they help the body fight against free radicals that cause cell and tissue damage. Green tea also has very few potential side effects, especially when compared to other acne products and medications.

In most cases, the patient may experience a throbbing pain in any one side of the head (sometimes it spreads to both sides as well), and the condition is usually accompanied by nausea or sometimes vomiting. Acupuncture for Sinus Headache Treatment
by Sandra Kim Leong

Acupuncture is one of the oldest form of healing. It is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The most popularly studied technique involves inserting thin metal needles (having the thickness of a hair) at the acupuncture points, the needles being manipulated by electric signals or bare hands. The needles are solid and it involves injection of no drug or medical substance.

For the patient, the needle insertion does not usually trigger any pain and with the most modern insertion techniques, it is even possible that they may not even realize that the needle is indeed being inserted into their skins.

Acupuncture has been found to be an effective sinus headache treatment. Sinus headaches are caused by the inflammation of the mucous membrane of the sinus cavities in the face. It is characterized by a deep, dull pain in front of one’s head or face (at specific points such as behind the eyes or side of the nose) and the pain usually sharpens during the physical movements of the head, especially while bending down or leaning over.

Our bodies get toxins from the highly processed foods that we consume, the contaminated water that we drink and the polluted air that we breathe. When there is an overload in toxins, the organs that are involved in the elimination of waste and toxins ends up being stressed. That is when we start to experience symptoms such as chronic headaches, skin allergies, premature ageing, etc. These symptoms are indicative of our ailing organs.

There are many ways that you can eliminate toxins from your body. One is by colon cleansing and another is through a detox diet. Juice fasting is a method of detoxification via diet. Many studies have shown the beneficial effects of juice fasting: treat bio chemical imbalances, reduce our cholesterol levels, treat allergies, acne, weight loss, etc.

Practising Alternative Medicine and Therapies From the Home
by Evelyn Lim

Usually when we think of alternative medicine or therapies, we conjure images of some out-of-the-ordinary practices. Of course, alternative medicine and therapies can range to the more “unconventional” ones like hypnotherapy, past life regression, energy healing, etc. But mostly, they are not.

Here comes some surprising statistics. The World Health Organization estimates that between 65 and 80 percent of the world’s population (about 3 billion people) rely on traditional (read: “alternative”) medicine as their primary form of health care. It further states that when these traditional medical treatments are introduced into Western culture, they are seen as complementary or alternative.

Prevent Colon Cancer Through Colon Cleansing
By Sandra Kim Leong

The colon fulfills very important functions in our bodies. The colon's job is to retain water and nutrients into our bodies and help us eliminate waste. American diets are low in fiber and in fact, many do not drink enough water. Good sources of fiber is found in vegetables and fruits.

The low level of fiber prevents the colon from cleaning itself. This results in a buildup of toxic matter in the colon. The buildup of toxic matter in the colon can lead to many health problems, the most serious of which is colon cancer. A toxic body also means a weakened immune system and the body's inability to fight disease and illness.

Natural Detox Using Herbs
by Sandra Kim Leong

Many are embracing the idea of detox and cleansing. It is believed that an overload of toxins in our bodies results in a sluggishness in the performance of our body organs. When our body organs are not functioning properly, our immune system breaks down and disease and illness strike. By detoxifying, waste and toxins get flushed out of our bodies. Our organs, especially those that are involved in the process of waste elimination, such as the liver, kidney, skin and colon are rejuvenated and can then work optimally again.

It is possible to detox through the use of herbs. In fact, it is believed that herbs are better than synthetic substances as the former have little side effects. The following list explains some western herbs commonly used for detoxification and why they work.

Top 5 Sure-Fire Ways to Fight Cellulite
By Evelyn Lim

Cellulite – the “c” word that women dreads. Cellulite is otherwise known as “cottage cheese”, “orange peel” due to its dimpled appearance on the skin. Despite sleeping well, eating right and getting plenty of exercise, women can still be plagued with unsightly cellulite.

It is believed that nearly 95% of all women have some degree of cellulite. Researchers say that hormones cause cellulite. Thus, it is not the direct result of being overweight, but the effect that hormones are having on the layer of fat under the skin. This explains why thin people can still get some degree of cellulite. Cellulite appears often after pregnancy, (or being on birth control pills) when the system is flooded with estrogen, or after a traumatic experience. It can also be the case of a toxin overload due to an unhealthy diet of processed foods and not enough water intake.

Aromatherapy Treatment for Healing
by Evelyn Lim

Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing form of treatment in the world. Aromatherapy treatment is the use of volatile oils derived from plants to affect the mood or health. However, manufacturers now also used the term to also describe the herbal oils and scents used in soaps, lotions, shampoos and conditioners. People tend to perceive that the higher prices on these items are justified because of the “aromatherapeutic” value in them.

While aromatherapy treatment is regarded as a complementary medical tool in the United States, the role of essential oils and aromatherapy are taken more seriously in Europe. In France, for instance, many essential oils are available only by prescription and aromatherapy is a part of conventional medicine.

While most people believe that aromatherapy is all about what your nose senses, there is far more to it than just scent. Essential oils are extracts from plants, many of which do have pharmacologic effects on the body and mind. For instance, lavender oil has a specific chemical makeup that is thought to act on chemical receptors in the brain.

Ayurveda: A Basic Understanding
by Evelyn Lim

Ayurveda is the Indian medical system of healing. It dates back to more than 5,000 years ago. Much like many of the ancient ways of healing, Ayurveda has been referred to as a holistic medicine. Holistic medicine means a diagnostic system that considers both (physical) body and spirit aspects. In fact, ayurveda is more like a lifestyle and covers all aspects of health including nutrition and amazingly, surgery.

The main aim of Ayurveda is prevention. Ancient text tells us that humans should be able to live to be about 100 years old and that one can live to a ripe old age in good health, both physically and mentally. Ayurveda does not accept that getting old equals a failing health and a poor quality of life. Although these texts have been written several thousand years ago, Ayurvedic principles remain very much applicable even in today’s environment. It is possible for anyone to introduce Ayurvedic principles into their life. There are plenty of benefits that can be derived from doing so.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: An Overview
by Evelyn Lim

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient medical system dating 5,000 years ago. As TCM is based little on scientific proof and facts, it is mostly regarded as an alternative medicine system in the West. However, in China and other Asian countries, it is the medical system that locals turn to.

TCM practitioners are trained in the diagnostic and healing techniques with centuries of tradition and philosophy. TCM is also holistic. It considers all aspects of the person including physical, nutritional, emotional, mental and spiritual for diagnosis. This is in contrast to conventional western medicine that tends to treat only the symptoms of the disease and illness.

TCM is based on the balance of opposing elements (the yin and yang) in the body, as well as their harmony with the environment around it. The two main forces of yin and yang combine to form the “qi” (pronounced as “chee”) or universal life force. When qi is in harmony, health is not only enhanced but also the capacity for fufilment, happiness and well being. Disease and illness arise from imbalances of yin and yang that block the proper flow of qi. Therapies to treat disease are aimed at restoring the balance and unblocking the flow to restore health.

An Air Purifier for a Breathe of Fresh Air

Posted on Mar 1, 2006 at 03:37 PM by Jay B Stockman | Comments (0)

One of the most important elements for the survival of human beings is air. Air is a vital component of a very complex set of respiratory functions. This air must be free of contaminants that could cause a potential health risk. Air that contains particles of dust mites, pet dander, pollen and mold spores can cause asthma, allergies and respiratory illnesses. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that indoor air is 70 times more contaminated than outside air. Airborne chemicals from flooring, insulation, paints, cleaning products and other building materials give off dangerous chemical fumes. As a result, homes and offices could potentially increase the likelihood of an allergy or respiratory problems. In order to alleviate these risk factors, it is necessary to utilize a high efficiency air purifier. A high efficiency air purifier circulates air through filters that trap toxins, and allergens, and removes them from inside air.
