Smart Ways To Deal With Stress

"The stress response of the body is somewhat like an airplane readying for take-off. Virtually all systems are modified to meet the perceived danger."
The quote above described how stress sets you up for a "fight or flight" response. Your body goes on instant alert by speeding up heartbeat and breathing, by shooting extra glucose into the bloodstream for quick energy, by squeezing down arteries so more blood flows to the brain and vital organs. But remember stress is an avoidable consequence of life. Your reactions to your stressors define how you can be affected.
Here are some smart ways of dealing with stress :
1. Exercise daily, 15 to 20 minutes.
2. Learn to relax. Practice 10 to 15 minutes twice daily in a peaceful, quiet setting. Let go of the negatives. Develop visual imagery.
3. Talk it over. Share your problems with a friend and, if needed, a mental health professional.

How your diet can help you cope with stress
Posted on Mar 9, 2008 at 01:08 PM by Catherine Naomie
Stress is essentially a battle between your body and the environment - and your body's greatest defence in this battle is energy, which comes from food.
As a busy parent who eats well and stays fit, I believe good nutrition is your best stress management tool.
Unfortunately, the diet of most North Americans is a stress in itself.
Many of us skip breakfast and rely instead on coffee to give us that morning boost.
This artificial energy curbs appetite, but this in turn lowers the metabolic rate - the rate at which we can derive energy from our food.

Why Stress Can Make You Sick

Stress is an inevitable part of daily life. Sometimes, a little stress is necessary to challenge and stimulate you to achieve your goals and avoid procrastination. According to a famous scientist Hans Selye, "Stress is the body's response to any demand put on it, real or imagined." The problem starts if there's too much stress and the stress becomes chronic, then it becomes a destructive force in your life.
A study from the Cornell University Medical College showed that "those who experience a great deal of stress are more likely to go through a major depression." This happens because stress lowers the levels of brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, which are responsible for mood.
Author Barbara Brehm, writing in her book "Stress Management : Increasing Your Stress Resistance," says that chronic stress can interfere with short-term memory and may even damage certain areas of the brain. Stress lowers your natural resistance and makes you more susceptible to all kinds of infections like skin problems, colds and flu. Brehm explains that stress can worsen or even trigger autoimmune disorders like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Stress has also been discovered to be the cause of most ulcers. Although the bacterium Helicobacter pylori has been found to be one of the causes of most ulcers, stress still plays a major role because it lessens the protective mucus of the stomach. This gives the bacterium a chance of attacking the stomach and causing ulcer. Other digestive disorders that are said to be stress-related are constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome and nausea.

Anger Management: How To Deal With It?

We've all had those moments in which we feel completely out of control with frustration. Perhaps you've thrown something across the room, screamed at someone uncontrollably or put your fist through a wall. Those adrenaline filled moments seem unstoppable and uncontrollable. Most people react out of emotion and not rationality. Unfortunately, the majority of people will lash out without thinking and then realize what they should have done after the fact and the damage isn't exactly easy to take back. We hurt the feelings of others during those stressful moments and perhaps even cause some damage to ourselves or our property.

Panic or anxiety attack is defined as a "sudden surge of overwhelming fear that comes without warning and without any obvious reason. Although psychologists say it is not dangerous, panic attack may be alarming and frightening because it makes one feel crazy and out of control. Others even mistake it for a heart attack.
According to various internet sources, the symptoms are : "racing heartbeat, difficulty in breathing, terror that is almost paralyzing, lightheadedness, trembling, sweating, shaking, fear that you're going to go crazy or about to die." The "Panic Attack Recovery Book", by Shirley Swede and Seymour Sheppard Jaffe, M.D, Dr. David Barlow, suggested some ways to avoid undue anxiety.

Anxiety and depression are the most common mental illnesses affecting more than 35 million Americans each year. Symptoms of anxiety and depression are complex emotional disorders and they do not mean you are going insane. They are among the most treatable health conditions that we suffer. No specific cause for depression and anxiety has been identified. It is believed that the emotional and physical symptoms of anxiety and depression stem from a chemical imbalance that exists in the brain. Both anxiety and depression are frequently treated in much the same manner, which may explain why the two disorders are so often confused. When you're suffering the torment of stress, anxiety and depression, you want relief and you want it fast.

5 Practical Tips To Reduce Stress Levels

Stress is often referred to as "crunch times." We all have crunch times, it shows up in all our lives whether at home or in the workplace. And since there's often not much we can do to prevent stressful events from occuring, the best possible strategy is to minimize the impact that stress has in our life and know how our own personal system reacts to it.
There are a variety of ways that we can respond to stress and cope with it. The following are some practical tips for keeping stress at bay :
1. Remember that stress is a response
The problem with many people during stress times begins when they start to feel overwhelmed by life's demands. Remember that the event or situation does not determine your response, only you can do that. Deciding to remain calm is sure to lead to a better outcome than being overwhelmed to emotions such as fear or anger.
2. Learn to laugh
Laughter is still the best medicine, as the popular saying goes. Psychologist Steve Wilson, author of the book, The Art of Mixing Work and Play and Super Humor Power, knows the value of laughter in a stressful situations. Wilson says "The immune effect of laughter stays with us for a lifetime. In light of the data about how stress defeats the immune system, the saying 'laughter is the best medicine' contains indisputable scientific backing."
3. Be gentle with yourself
A positive mindset wins half the battle when it comes to managing stress effectively. When faced with a stressful situation in which you are likely to feel defeated, repeat positive words and treat yourself with care and concern, just as any supportive friend would. Practice positive self-talk like "I can handle that" or "I will remain calm."

Scientific evidence has shown that a person's emotional state can affect his health and well-being. Having negative feelings like anxiety, anger, depression, etc. can literally make a person ill if these emotions are not properly managed and controlled.
In one study, it was found that persons with high score in Trait Anger (TA) or high in Vital Exhaustion (VE) levels had a 42 percent greater risk of heart attack than those with low VE levels. In another study, it has also been observed that anger can reduce the pumping efficiency of the heart and has been associated with higher incidence of heart attacks. Other researchers have found that chronically depressed individuals were 70% more likely to have a heart attack when compared with non-depressed individuals (Mind/Body Health, 1996b).

Massage therapy has been around for a long time. Ancient cultures in China, Egypt, India, Greece and Rome used massage as part of their medical and health procedures.
Massage has been used to treat all kinds of medical conditions and disorders. Massage can be used to treat stress, it can help you relax and it generally promotes a feeling of well being. Massage therapy works to help all aspects of the physical system - the muscular, nervous, circulatory and immune systems.
Quite apart from the undoubted physical benefits of massage therapy, much of the benefit is psychological; it has to do with the feel-good factor of intimate contact with another human being.

Overcoming Panic And Anxiety Attacks

Wikipedia defines panic attack as a "period of intense fear or psychological distress, typically of abrupt onset." It is distinguished from other forms of anxiety by it's intensity and it's sudden episodic nature. Symptoms include fast-beating heart, tense muscles, shortness of breath, dizziness, etc.
I know how difficult to help a person paralyzed with this kind of fear. I have a close relative who experienced episodic anxiety attack and it took a year before she seemed to regain control of her "fears". I would like to share with you some strategies that helped her recover It is called the Morita Therapy, a psychological treatment named for the late Japanese psychologist Shoma Morita.
Here's some of the strategies developed by Morita :
* Accept your anxiety. Stop rejecting it, stop trying to control or eliminate it and stop seeing it as a personal weakness or mental abnormality.
* Develop a new way of relating to your anxiety. Realize your anxiety is yours. It is not some foreign thing that invades your life and renders you powerless. It has come from within you. It is you, and must be prepared to claim it as your own. Once you decide to give up the fight, you will experience the relief that comes from no longer having to be constantly prepared for the battle. This allows you to work with it.
* Develop an awareness of anxiety as an emotion. The thoughts running through your mind must be considered. The anxiety you have are simply feelings and like all feelings, they come and go as they please, and the only thing to do with emotions is to let them be.

Warning Signs of Stress Overload

Stress is defined as the "the non-specific response of the body to any demand made up on it." In other words, the body reacts to stressors, the things that upset or excite us in the same way, whether they are positive or negative. The way you response to a stressor in your situation is crucial. Changing the way you react and interpret events in your life, a skill called "reframing" can make all the difference.
Unmanaged stress can affect every aspect of your life. At risk is your physical well being, psychological health, your behavior and your performance at work. Dr. Gary S. Sy, author and a medical doctor from the Philippines , in his article "Dealing with Stress", enumerates the following clues which are possible warnings of stress overload :
* Physical Reactions to stress
Muscle tension, rapid pounding heartbeat, fast and shallow breathing, sweating, chest discomfort, tiredness and weakness, sleep problems, over-alertness, indigestion, aches, pains or twitches.
* Emotional reactions to stress
Feeling under pressure, feeling tense and unable to relax, feeling mentally drained , being constantly frightened or worried, irritability, feelings of conflict, restlessness and inability to concentrate.

Empowerment Definition

When it comes to finding an empowerment definition, there seems to be quite a bit of controversy about how to define it.
According to thefreedictionary.com., empowerment came to be known as "to invest with authority, authorize" at some point in the mid-1600's.
I find that my idea of an empowerment definition is one that leans more toward personal growth and development. To me, the definition of empowerment starts with a thought process where you first of all feel very secure in yourself.

Hair Loss Solutions For Women That Really Work
Posted on Oct 2, 2006 at 11:36 AM by Kristie Brown
| Comments (0)
Hair loss solutions for women are out there. When most people think of hair loss, they think of men. Female balding occurs in women more often then we would like. The good news is this: it's easier to find a solution for women then for men as womens' conditions are usually temporary and can be improved.
The causes of hair loss in women:
There are a few reasons why women face female balding. It's important you identify the reason of your hair loss before beginning any treatment.
Some common reasons for female hair loss are:
- Androgenetic alopecia: This is the hereditary form of baldness which usually affects 50% of men and some women after the age of 40.
- Hormonal changes: Hair thinning occurs sometimes in women after menopause when they experience hormonal changes.
- Pregnancy: During pregnancy hair loss may occur because the body's metabolism is stressed with the pregnancy, while feeding the baby at the same time and trying to balance the mother's body. Sometimes during pregnancy women are faced with other deficiencies such as calcium for the same reason. Pregnancy during hair loss will pass the month after the baby is born.
- Stress: This is a very popular cause of hair loss in women and men. It can be delayed as much as three months after you were faced with a stressful period. Physical and emotional stress always take a toll on your body and often show physical signs in your hair, nails, teeth and skin glow.
- Diets: Some women undertake crash diets in order to achieve a desired look. Nutrition greatly effects your hair growth.
Individuals who undergo a crash diet can experience a variety of undesirable results such as a loss of the natural glow in their skin, their nails can become very britle and they can notice signs of thinning in their hair as well.
On a positive note, aside from hereditary baldness, all of the above conditions can be treated. Hereditary baldness, however, can only be treated through hair transplant and/or wigs.
Treatments for hair thinning or hair loss
- Hair tonic: There are many products available on the market today with some applicable in the shower and some you leave in your hair after a shower. They are very beneficial should you follow the full treatment religiously.
- Hair mask: The mask acts similar to the tonic but hair masks must be washed out. A mask conditions and nourishes your hair from the root to the tip of the hair folicle. Use hair masks before every shower or as indicated on the package.
- Drugs: If you'd rather not bother with hair applications, specific drugs are available in the pharmacy that target both hair and nails. They too are very effective if a proper treatment if observed. Taking care of your diet as well as balancing your stress levels is the key to great hair and lively health. Eat healthy and exercise to improve your body's nutrition and general well being.

Ilana Rubenfeld Ph.D knows first hand what having a conversation with your body means. A gifted violinist at the Julliard School of Music, Rubenfeld was well on her way to become the first woman conductor in the music scene when a debilitating back spasm cut short her music career. It was at that point that Rubenfeld turned to the resources of her body and transformed trauma into triumph by embarking on a personal mission to look for answers in the body’s wisdom. The result is The Listening Hand: The Rubenfeld Synergy Method of Talk and Touch which made her a world-recognized pioneer in integrating psychotherapy, body work and intuition. “You can learn to develop ‘listening hands’ in order to ‘hear’ changes in the body," she says. Talking with your body is the first step towards healing and integration.

EFT is usually a better alternative, just not a snuggly as my blanky. This morning when I got up I felt stressed from some events that happened yesterday. I couldn't shake it off no matter how hard I tried to be positive and keep that stiff upper lip. So I did a little EFT.
Now you may be thinking EF What? EFT. That stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. Before you go humming the Twilight Zone theme song and rolling your eyes around looking for little green men in the sky, let me assure you that prior to finding out about this way to relieve the stress of past emotional stress, I did just that. So let me introduce you to EFT in the hope that you begin to investigate its benefits.

Every once in awhile, one of those nights comes along where it is impossible to fall asleep. You toss and turn, watching the time on the clock get later and later (or earlier and earlier, as the case may be). The more you try to fall asleep, the more your body fights it, and it becomes a losing battle until sometime right before dawn, you finally fall asleep, exhausted. Of course, it is then only a short time before your alarm clock rings and you wake, grumpy and tired, for that important meeting or jam-packed day and wonder how you’ll ever get through it.
The next time that happens, try one or more of these remedies and see if you can calm the body and the mind enough to get those important 8 hours.

Unfortunately, most people engage in negative thinking. Their minds are filled with negative thoughts, which in turn result in negative human emotions. What you need to realize is that what kind of thoughts you allow to enter into your mind now will affect what you experience in the future.
Of course, if you’re already in the midst of misery resulting from the negative thinking of your past, it can be a challenge to reverse the process. But, the process does need to be reversed if you truly wish to live a life of abundance.

Use Aromatherapy for Anxiety Relief
by Evelyn Lim
Anxiety is a state of mind that focuses on negative emotions, thoughts and feelings. It may also come about because of a previous traumatic experience. Anxiety often happens when fear, nervousness, paranoia, and worry set in.
Many people who suffer from anxiety find it hard to enjoy themselves fully. Sometimes when anxiety becomes extreme, even performing normal day-to-day tasks become difficult to do. It has been found that nearly twice as many women as men suffer from anxiety, panic, and fear related conditions.
Associated negative emotions are also phobias and fears. Many people face normal fears throughout their lives and this is to be expected, it is when people develop unhealthy fears for things that aren’t logical, or have a completely exaggerated response to a fear is when the phobia begins to hinder normal life.
Although anxiety begins in the mind, it will affect the body as well. Some of the physical symptoms associated with anxiety are a result of the pressures of fear and panic. These symptoms may include shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and increased perspiration. The fear may also lead to a feeling of an upset stomach or nausea.
When someone perceives a threat, they experience what is known as the “fight or flight” response. This is a very natural response and is part of the body’s instinct for human survival. However, when the body is put in a fearful state, the immune system becomes depressed. If a person faces an inability to cope especially in extreme cases of anxiety and stress, he or she is more liable to become ill.
It is important, therefore to relieve your anxiety and stress level wherever possible. Also, do not wait too long to address them as they will be easier to treat in the initial stages.
In less severe cases, you can consider using aromatherapy to help calm and soothe your nerves. . Aromatherapy consists of a therapy that involves the use of concentrated essential oils. These oils can be massaged into the skin, inhaled or put into a bath. When inhaled or massaged, the theory suggests that the limbic system, (which is the part of the brain that stores and retrieves learnt memories and controls emotions and relaxes you) is triggered. By stimulating the body’s senses with pleasant fragrances, negative feelings and emotions will give way to peace and tranquility.
Hence, if you are feeling anxious, take an aromatic bath. By bathing in tranquil and nerve calming herbs, you can fight fear naturally and release tension and anxiety. The appropriate herbal oils should be used according to the emotions or negative feelings that you have and hoping to treat. You can add 10 drops of Chamomile to a hot bath for a relaxing anxiety-soothing bath. Soak for at least 20 minutes to achieve the full benefit.
You can also make wonderful massage oil with 6 drops Bergamot essential oil, 6 drops of Clary Sage, and 3 drops of Frankincense. Blend the essential oils with 1-ounce carrier oil, such as Sweet Almond or Jojoba for an incredible fear relieving massage.
However, if you are suffering from extreme anxiety, it is best to seek proper help. Psychiatrists may recommend a course of therapy along with prescribed medication to help ease the fears. Many of the medications however, often carry side effects and must be taken according to their instructions.
On the contrary, aromatherapy for anxiety relief has little side effects. Nevertheless, be sure to consult with a qualified aromatherapist if you are pregnant or suffering from some major illness or disease. In most cases, however, aromatherapy can really do wonders for anxiety relief and can be easily administered at home. So if you have been feeling a little more worked up lately, try using aromatherapy for anxiety relief!
