Do you like popcorn?

Posted on Nov 6, 2009 at 09:26 AM by Perriann Rodriguez | Comments (0)

When I go to the movies, I have to have popcorn. Several times I have thought to myself that I wouldn't buy popcorn this time, only to go get some at the last minute before the movie starts.

It just goes with movies. The movie experience is not as good if you don't have popcorn. Yes I know about all the calories, etc. in popcorn. I usually adjust my calories during the day to accommodate all those extra calories.

Sometimes, when I watch movies at home, I will make some microwave popcorn to eat. Just read something very disturbing that might change that habit real quick.

The rates of cancer diagnosis are up. It seems like tons of people are being diagnosed with cancer every day.

There are so many consequences in life that are real. For example...

If you eat a lot of junk food, donuts, cakes, etc. every day, you will get fat.

If you don't have a job, you won't make any money.

What about the question-- If you do ___________ you will get cancer. What goes in that blank?

Cancer Cure and Prevention - What we need to do

Posted on Oct 5, 2009 at 05:08 AM by Perriann Rodriguez | Comments (0)

As I was working out this morning- doing P90x DVD Kenpo exercises, I was thinking about how many people that I know directly or indirectly have been diagnosed with cancer in the last 5 years. I am really amazed at the sudden increase in cancer diagnosis.

Of course, there are no definitive answers to what causes or triggers cells to turn cancerous. There are some theories and medical research that point at certain factors, but there is no simple answer to 'What causes cancer? But as I was working out today I came to a conclusion about cancer.

What is Acid Reflux? Is There a Natural Treatment?

Posted on Aug 17, 2009 at 06:39 PM by Margaret Dunn | Comments (0)

What is acid reflux? Acid reflux is simply defined by it's own title: acids build up in your stomach and reflux means that instead of the acids staying in your stomach where they belong, they come back up into your throat (also known as your esophagus. Is there a natural treatment for this disease because none of the prescriptions seem to work?

I just started reading the book titled "The One Minute Cure". It is about using food grade 35% hydrogen peroxide to cure many illnesses including cancer.

This book isn't written by a company or person selling 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide, or someone who would directly benefit from eveyone using this treatment.

Have I got your attention?

Meat Consumption And Colon Cancer Risk

Posted on Jul 31, 2009 at 04:47 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Health advocates and the popular press have been telling us that diet is a major risk factor for many kinds of cancer. One of the strongest cases for a relationship between diet and cancer is the case of meat consumption and colon cancer risk. Studies have shown that incidence of colon cancer is generally low in nations and in cultures where meat consumption is low, while in Europe and North America, where meat consumption is high, colon cancer incidence is also high. Moreover, people who move from a low incidence area, such as Japan, to a high incidence area, such as the United States, tend to acquire the high colon cancer incidence rate of the adopted country (B.E. Henderson, R.K. Ross, M.C. Pike : "Toward the primary prevention of cancer," Science", v.254, 1991).

One of the best studies that associated meat and animal fat consumption with colon cancer risk is known as the Nurses' Health Study. It involved initially 121,700 female registered nurses in 1976, the beginning year of this prospective study. Subjects were surveyed using questionnaire on known and suspected risk factors for cancer. Then, all of these women were studied and followed over time. Women were eliminated from the study if they did not properly complete the dietary questionnaire, or if they had previously had cancer or other bowel disease. This left a group of 88,751 women who were closely followed until 1986. During the course of the study 150 women developed colon cancer, and this small group of patients was then compared to the other women in the study who did not develop cancer.

Breast Cancer And The Family History

Posted on Jul 22, 2009 at 03:29 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Is there evidence for cancer proneness? It has been known for many years that a maternal history of breast cancer is a major breast cancer risk factor. This suggests that although many factors interact to increase or decrease breast cancer risk, genes and the family history are important in determining breast cancer proneness.

Cigarette Smoking A Risk Factor For Leukemia, Study Says

Posted on Jul 21, 2009 at 03:34 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Tobacco use has been strongly linked to many diseases, including heart disease, bronchitis, emphysema, and roughly one-third of all human cancers. It has been estimated that smoking is responsible for : 90% of all deaths from lung cancer ; 80% of all deaths from cancer of the larynx ; 78% of all deaths from esophageal cancer ; 48% of all deaths from kidney cancer ; and 17% of all deaths from stomach cancer ( H.B Simon : Staying well : your complete guide to disease prevention). Here's one study that linked smoking to an increased incidence of leukemia.

Carotenoids In Cancer Prevention

Posted on Jul 15, 2009 at 02:24 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

A variety of published studies show that a high carotenoid intake is directly related to a decreased risk of cancer. The carotenoids are the pigments that give vegetables such as carrots, squash, and tomatoes their bright colors. All yellow and orange fruits and dark-green leafy vegetables have these compounds. Carotenoids were first discovered in carrots, which is how they got their name.

High dietary intake of carotenoids is known to result in high concentrations of carotenes in the bloodstream. A large study of the effect of beta-carotene in cancer prevention was reported in the American Journal of Nutrition (1991 : v.53, 2605-2645). This study involved 25,802 volunteers in rural Washington County, Maryland, representing about 30% of the population of the the whole country. Blood samples were carefully drawn and kept frozen during a follow-up period of more than 10 years. A total of 436 people developed cancer in this interval. The cancer cases were matched to 765 controls of the same age, then all of the case and control serum samples were analyzed, with a focus on cancers of the colon, rectum, pancreas, lung, skin, breast, prostate, and bladder.

Asbestos Exposure And Mesothelioma

Asbestos has been recognized as a public health hazard. Thanks to the efforts of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate public exposure to asbestos, the incidence of asbestosis, a lung scarring disease, has been declining in the United States for nearly 40 years.

The relationship between asbestos and lung cancer is well known, what is not widely reported is the link between asbestos and a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma. A study published in the British Journal Industrial Med. (1988:v.45:182-187) has shown that mesotheliomas occur in men exposed to asbestos in the workplace, or occasionally in family members who either live near asbestos mines or are exposed to asbestos fibers brought home on clothing.

Be Aware Of Carcinogens In Food

Posted on Jun 10, 2009 at 04:20 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Studies on diet and it's association on specific forms of cancer are becoming consistent in their findings nowadays. Diet that includes substantial amounts of smoked foods and meats treated with nitrates and nitrites, used as preservatives, have higher rates of cancer of the stomach and esophagus. Foods that are prepared in these ways include hot dogs, bacon, and ham.

Cooking meat, poultry, or fish at high temperature may also result in the formation of carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). Cancer of the mouth and pharynx is promoted by drinking very hot beveragesa common practice in such places as Afghanistan and China, where studies showed, the incidence of this type of cancer is high.

Beating Cancer With Nutrition

Posted on May 12, 2009 at 01:11 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Why do certain cells multiply to produce the outlaws we call cancer cells? We don't know. What we know, for example, is that after cells have become cancerous, the situation changes, and it is not possible to curb the aggressive multiplying cancer cells by good nutrition. While some studies showed possible nutritional manipulation to starve cancer cells and make them multiply more slowly, the animal or person that bears the cancer is generally being starved simultaneously too. It would appear that the most important measure to be taken would be to improve the nutritional environment of the cells to prevent the onset of cancer.

Early animal studies cited from the book of the brilliant scientist Dr. Roger G. Williams, "Nutrition Against Disease," showed evidence of the importance of the nutritional environment of cells in preventing cancer. A California study was performed that involved injecting of certain liver extracts to mice in preventing spontaneous mammary tumor formation. Nearly half of the contracted mice developed tumors, compared with about one-sixth of those receiving the liver extract.. The effect was attributed to some nutrilites present in liver extract( known or unknown). Liver extracts are known to be rich in various B vitamins but it cannot be concluded to be the only nutrient to be watched in connection with cancer prevention. In other animals or human beings some other nutrients might play a comparable role.

Apple - This can prevent cancer and cholesterol

Posted on Mar 12, 2009 at 11:43 AM by Srinivas GS | Comments (0)

http://healthtips.inThere is a well known proverb "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Apples are available in various shades of red, green and yellow. They are sodium, fat and cholesterol free. Apples are a source of both insoluble and soluble fiber. Pectin (Soluble fiber), actually helps in preventing cholesterol buildup at the linings of blood vessels walls, and reduces the incident of atherosclerosis and heart disease.

It is a good habit to eat apples with their skin because half of the vitamin C content is just underneath the skin. Apple juice is a good nutritious drink and excellent in overcoming a liverish feeling. Apple helps in sorting digestive disturbances and towards flushing the kidneys. There are many health providing properties in cider vinegar, so if you cannot obtain apples to prepare your juice you can use instead two full teaspoons of cider vinegar in a glass of water. Apples may reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer Apples contain comparatively low amounts of Vitamin C as well as many other antioxidant compounds. The fiber content, while less than in most other fruits, helps regulate bowel movements and may thus reduce the risk of colon cancer. They also reduce the risk of heart disease, promote weight loss and controls cholesterol.

Research studies have found many factors which lead to the formation of cancer. A couple of studies that repeatedly showed that eating meat fat is a cause of cancer :

* A 12-year research study, of more than 5,000 vegetarians and over 6,000 meat eaters found that vegetarian diets reduce risk of death from all causes, including cancer. People who ate no meat had a 40% lower risk of dying from cancer and a 20% lower risk than meat eaters dying from a cause. (Research is co-authored by Margaret Thorogood, Ph. D.)

* A Harvard study of nearly 48,000 men, aged 40-75 , found that meat fat helps tumors grow more quickly. leading sources of saturated fats are beef, pork, processed meats, whole milk, dairy products, and fats and oils ( such as butter, margarine, and mayonnaise).

Several studies have shown the protective effects of breastfeeding both for the babies and mothers. Apart from providing long-term health benefits to the babies, breastfeeding reduces the risk of developing breast cancer, researchers revealed.

A study by the Cancer Research UK analyzed 47 published studies with subjects of nearly 150,000 from 30 countries. Researchers concluded that the reasons for the increased incidence of breast cancer in Western countries are twofold : breastfeeding for shorter periods of time and for having fewer children. This finding supports other studies that reinforces the view that hormonal and reproductive factors play a role in the development of breast cancer.

New Plant-based Cancer Vaccine Developed To Fight Cancer, Study

Posted on Aug 4, 2008 at 11:32 PM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (1)

Scientists have developed a plant-based cancer vaccine capable of kick-starting a body's immune response with the hope to treat cancer, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The vaccine has already been tested and successfully cured cancer in mice. This is also the first time a plant-based cancer vaccine that is tested on humans with promising results. There have been a few trials of cancer vaccines tested on animal or human cells but found to have had mixed results.

A team of researchers led by Ronald Levy of the Stanford University Medical Center tested the vaccine on 16 patients who were recently diagnosed with follicular B-cell lymphoma, a chronic, incurable disease. More than 70 percent of the patients developed an immune response and none experienced any significant side effects.

"The idea is to marshall the body's own immune system to fight cancer. We know that if you get the immune system revved up, it can attack and kill cancer," Ronald Levy said. Finding the right target requires cloning the genes from the patient's tumor, explained the lead author from his interview featured in the paper. Then those genes are injected into a virus, which naturally attacks tobacco plants. This virus is scratched onto the leaves of a tobacco plant and it becomes a "protein production factor," Levy further explained. After a week, the leaves are ground up and then the protein is isolated and injected into the patient.

Breast cancer is every woman's greatest fear. It is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women aged 35 to 54. According to Dr. Rey Joson, a renowned cancer surgeon in Manila, the cause of breast cancer is still unknown, although genetic predisposition is considered a factor. Another factor that might have increased a woman's risk of developing breast cancer is late childbearing. Women who have their first child after the age of 30 have a greater chance of developing breast cancer than women who have a child at a younger age.

However, Dr. Joson said, breast cancer may be arrested or even cured if detected early enough. It is therefore necessary for every women, especially those twenty and above, to conduct a self-examination of the breast (SEB) regularly. This allows a woman to detect lumps at an early stage. Here's some simple steps Dr. Joson recommend to do it properly :

Anti-Cancer Properties Found In Broccoli

Posted on Jul 21, 2008 at 04:33 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Broccoli contains what could be the most powerful anti-cancer compound ever detected, scientists say from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Researchers have isolated an ingredient in broccoli that kindles the activity of critical enzymes in the cell known to help protect against tumors.

The chemical, sulforaphane, have been identified that stimulate these protective enzymes. It could be the main reason that people who eat abundant amounts of broccoli, brussels sprouts and related cruciferous vegetables have significantly reduced risk of cancer compared with those who avoid the foods.

New Study Shows Hope To Flush Prostate Cancer Cells Out

Posted on Jul 17, 2008 at 04:13 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

A study published in the journal Nature Medicine showed a genetically engineered version of the cold virus helped flushed dangerous prostate cancer cells out of hiding in mice, making them visible using positron emission tomography or PET scans, an advanced diagnostic equipment used to target and treat cancers on the cellular level.

Lily Wu of the University of California and her team tinkered with the common cold virus, deleted all of the parts of the cold virus that make people sick using genetic engineering, spliced in genes that make proteins that can be seen on PET scans, and then added in other genes that target prostate cancer cells in mice. When Wu and her team injected the engineered virus into tumors in mice with prostate cancer, PET scans picked up signals from lymph nodes with cancer cells in them. "It's a prostate cancer-specific control switch," Wu said.

Can Science Make Cancer A "Controllable Disease" ? New Study Shows Promise

Posted on Jun 20, 2008 at 02:29 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Scientists from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, have discovered that cancer could become a "controllable chronic disease."

The study, described by medical experts as "startling" and "unexpected", says that tumors can remain dormant for decades. Eventually, this new discovery could be used to devise immunotherapies for tightening control of tumor growth.

Scientists led by Robert Schreiber, experimented using mice engineered to develop cancer with injections of a tar from cigarette smoke. Researchers found that the animals' immune system could keep the spread of tumors in check over an extended period.

According to scientists working at the University of Pennsylvania's Wistar Institute, all cancers have something in common : an enzyme called telomerase. Telomerase is associated with the uncontrollable cell growth in as many as 90 percent of all human cancers. It was first discovered in the mid 1990's and since then scientists have been working and finding ways how to stop this enzyme from forming but lack of knowledge hindered them.

Vitamin D and Chronic Disease

Growing up I remember spending hour upon hour playing outside-especially during the spring and summer months. As a matter of fact, my brothers and sisters were not unique in that respect. Every family enjoyed the outdoors in the sun.

In those days there was no media blitz warning people to beware of the sun for fear of developing skin cancer. So naturally people spent more time in sunlight without rubbing layers of sunblock on themselves.

Risk Factors Associated With Breast Cancer

Posted on May 14, 2008 at 02:31 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Breast cancer is fast becoming the number one killer among all forms of cancer in women in all parts of the world, studies reveal. As in other forms of cancer, the cause of breast cancer is not really known but researchers in a study that came out in the British medical journal were able to identify certain factors that can trigger the abnormal multiplication of cells that is associated with cancer but cautioned that these were not 100 percent conclusive.

* Excess weight and eating foods that are rich in fats are possible risk factors.

* The long-term use of hormone replacements in menopause and the use of oral contraceptives is increasing breast cancer risk.

* A woman's age ( doctors say women after the age of 45 years are at risk).

* A long span of years between the start and end of menstruation.

* Not having children or having them after the age of 35.

Role Of Diet In Cancer Treatment

Posted on Apr 29, 2008 at 03:09 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

For many patients with cancer, taking the appropriate diet becomes a challenge. Side effect of cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, is the loss of appetite that may further deplete the patient's will to live. Boosting appetite is boosting one's chances of survival, nutritionists say.

"Most importantly, cancer patients must take energy food like carbohydrates and sugar to invigorate them," says Sanirose Orbeta, a noted nutritionist. Food rich in carbohydrates assist in releasing the needed energy to sustain the body. Protein from meat products will only slow down the patient's digestive system. If patients don't feel like eating solid foods, Orbeta suggests, they can try liquid or powdered meal replacements during times when it is hard for them to eat food.

A cervical cancer study suggest that women who have sex with circumcised men have lower rates of cervical cancer, and the men themselves are less likely to develop genital warts. The study says that men with intact foreskins were three times more likely than circumcised men to be infected with the human papillomavirus. That, in turn, may increase the risk of passing the virus on to their sex partners.

7 Things You Can Do To Avoid Cancer

Posted on Mar 25, 2008 at 01:45 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Cancer generally is easier to prevent than to treat, health experts say. Nourishing the body, building up the immune system and avoiding excess and debilitating substances enables the body to resist cancer. Report from the National Cancer Institute, Press Bureau said : "About 80% of cancer cases appear to be linked to the way people lived their lives. For example, whether or not you smoke, the foods you eat, and certain industrial pollutants all affect your likelihood of getting cancer. The role of diet in the cause and prevention of cancer is particularlly important. About 35% of cancer deaths may be associated with dietary influences."

The NCI press bureau listed seven things you must do to avoid contracting cancer :

1. Avoid obesity : If you are 40% or more overweight, you increase your risk of colon, breast, prostate, gallbladder, ovary, and uterine cancer.

2. Cut down on fat intake. High-fat intake may be a factor in the development of certain cancers (particularly breast, colon, and prostate). By avoiding fatty foods, you are better able to control body weight.

3. Eat more high-fiber foods. These include wholegrain breads and cereals, fruits, vegetables, and legumes (such as dry peas and beans). These foods may help to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

4. Include foods rich in vitamins A and C. Favorable foods are dark-green and deep-yellow fresh vegetables and fruits, such as carrots, yams, peaches, and apricots for beta-carotene, the precursor of vitamin A. Also use oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, and green and red peppers for vitamin C. These foods may help lower risk for cancers of the larynx, esophagus, and the lungs.

But while, it connects people around the globe, there's been an undercurrent of fear that it may make our lives shorter, what with previous independent studies pointing at it's adverse effects on the human body, such as heating up the brain and causing headaches and nausea.

Now, we can relax and heave a sigh of relief. A study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, zeroed in on the ris of acoustic neuroma or benign tumors which grow in the nerve connecting the inner ear and ear to the brain, near where handsets are held. The study also investigated other kinds of tumor and their possible association with mobile phone use.

ESAs, the study said, raise the risk of death by 10 percent in patients who took them compared to those who did not.

"Our findings, in conjunction with basic science studies, raise the concern that the drug may be stimulating cancer and shortening cancer patient's survival," said Dr. Charles Bennett of Northwestern University in Chicago."The findings of mortality are new and are different from prior reports," he added. The study extracted data from 51 clinical trials with 13,611 patients who were treated with ESA's or a placebo.

Breast MRI : A Better Mammogram?

Posted on Feb 26, 2008 at 03:03 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

For many years, most women have found mammograms to do a good job of detecting breast cancer early. However, no screening is perfect, and the x-ray images of the traditional mammogram were found to miss some cancers. Last year, two studies of high-risk women compared breast MRIs with other screening tests - standard x-ray mammography, ultrasound, and clinical breast exams.

The study found that MRI scans identified cancers the other techniques missed. It showed that MRIs were especially helpful in women with dense breasts, which have more glandular and connective tissue and less fat than normal.

Obesity Increases Risk To Uterine And Breast Cancer

One major study says obesity or excess weight is most strongly linked to cancer of the uterine lining and breast cancer. The study estimated that an overweight woman has twice the risk of developing cancer than a lean one, once she becomes obese, the risk as much as 3.5 to 5-fold. Fat cells apparently play a role that can spur the cancer growth.

"Fat cells are not just static storage depots," explains American Cancer Society epidemiologist Eugenia Calle. The worst, because it's most metabolically active, is visceral fat, the kind that builds up in the abdomen and sorrounds organ there.

Cancer is a common illness in our society. You may wonder what you can do to decrease your risk of developing cancer, especially if you believe that you have a genetic predisposition for it. The following foods are known to promote cancer.

1. Refined sugar.

Cancer feeds off of sugar in the blood stream. Given this information, it makes sense to keep your blood sugar levels at a reasonable point, rather than eating sugary foods that elevate them. Not only will this cut a source from cancer cells, but it will allow your overall health and immune system to function more effectively.

Light Therapy Against Cancer Of The Pancreas

Posted on Dec 10, 2007 at 09:40 PM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Light therapy is one of the treatments that made inroads against cancer of the pancreas, one of the top 10 leading causes of death from cancer worldwide. Pancreatic cancer, doctors agree, is one of the most difficult cancers to treat because the pancreas is near major arteries and organs and plays a vital role in body functions.

The therapy was devised by University College Hospital doctors in London led by Stephen Brown. This so-called photodynamic therapy delivers targeted beams of brilliant light into the abdomen, shrank the tumor and increased the lifespan of many of the patients who were given it. A case study published in the specialist British Journal Gut, sixteen patients with advanced, inoperable pancreatic cancer were first injected with a chemical, meso-tetrahydoxyphenyl, that made their cells highly sensitive to light. Three days later, doctors inserted six fiber-optic needles through the abdominal skin that pointed directly at the tumor. They then beamed a diode laser down the needles, with the goal of killing the sensitized cancer cells with intense red light. Most of the patients had large tumors, but in each case the treatment caused the cancer to shrink. Almost half were still alive one year later, two survived two years, and one patient managed 30 months.

How you cook your foods matters

It is nearly impossible to do studies on what causes cancer. There are so many different facets of experiments that must be considered. For example let's say you are trying to prove that some food product, we'll call it Food Product 1, causes cancer. It could be that Food Product 1 alone does not cause cancer, but in combination with Food Product 2 or 3, it can be a potential carcinogen. The issue is isolating all the factors, creating a control group and coming up with any reliable results.

Recent research results from a company in Sweden seem to point to acrylamide as a cancer causing agent.

Each individual usually has adapted his own pattern of stool evacuation. And anything that deviates from the usual bowel habit should establish some concern with regards it's possible causes. Whether this changes in bowel habits is due to the type offood ingested, psychologic disorders or lesions in the gastrointestinal tract, these changes need to be determined and investigated for it may be the link to an early detection of colonic or rectal cancer, according to reports from the files of the Philippine College of Surgeons, Information Committee.

From the files , it was emphasized that a patient should be able to detect these various changes in his usual bowel habits, when they occur and seek medical consultation whenever possible. The patient must be fully aware of the various forms that may take place. These are :

Though men are only about 1% as likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer as women, in 2005 1,690 men found themselves facing just that reality. Perhaps even more sobering is the fact that more then 25% of men who are diagnosed with it, die of male breast cancer.

The Real Reasons Why Natural Cures For Cancer Are Not Widely Accepted

Posted on Nov 6, 2007 at 09:33 PM by Natalie Williams | Comments (0)

The main cause of cancer according to natural cancer treatment doctors is an unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Their approach to getting rid of cancer involves eliminating the root cause of cancer and not just the symptoms. Contrary to what most of us consider as a nutritious diet, an average person's diet is made up of toxic food like processed food, dairy products and meat. The immune system cannot operate optimally when these toxins pollute our bodies and this causes diseases to develop. By keeping the immune system up, our bodies can heal itself and annihilate the cancer cells naturally from within.

I have seen a lot of ads on TV lately saying that cervical cancer is often preventable. Isn't that amazing? Though there are things you can do to prevent other types of cancer, there is never a straightforward answer that works. This type of cancer is known to be caused by a virus that can be taken care of it caught early enough. This is why it is important for all women to get a yearly pap test to be sure the virus is not present in their system.

Does Caffeine Cause Cancer?

Posted on Oct 10, 2007 at 02:02 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (1)

The caffeine in coffee has been linked to cancer of the liver, bladder, kidney, and pancreas. But the research on the carcinogenicity of caffeine to support these claims was often anecdotal or fraught with inaccuracies and remains difficult to duplicate and validate.

Coffee is a complex chemical compound . Researchers , so far have identified more than three hundred substances in coffee, of which caffeine is but one. Caffeine is not the only substance in coffee that has been linked to bladder cancer. Tar and other chemicals formed when coffee is roasted have caused bladder cancer in guinea pigs even when no caffeine was present. One study reported from the Harvard School of Public Health showed that drinking two cups of coffee a day may double the risk of cancer of the pancreas. The researchers said the results were only preliminary and suggestive of further study.

To explore the other side of this issue, there are some studies lately that showed some evidence that caffeine may be anticarcinogenic and actually helpful in treating cancer. When caffeine is given in combination with radiation therapy or anticancer drugs, the effectiveness of these treatments seems to increase. Caffeine appears to prevent cancer cells from repairing themselves, hence making them more liable to destruction by radiation and drugs and less likely to spread quickly. But don't jump the gun , caffeine is not a cancer cure. More research and work needs to be done in these area as well.

Exposure To Chemical In Plastic Linked To Prostate Cancer

Posted on Jul 2, 2007 at 11:56 PM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Scientists have found that exposure to a chemical that leaks from plastic causes genetic changes in animal's developing prostate glands that may initiate the most common form of cancer in males.

Bisphenol A or BPA is the chemical used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastic of baby bottles, microwave cookware and other consumer goods. In previous studies, health experts and scientists have discovered that chemicals in the environment mimic estrogens and may be a contributing factor to female and male reproductive diseases including prostate cancer. BPA ranks among the world's most widely used industrial chemicals.

The scientists from the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Cincinnati exposed newborn rats to low doses of BPA. Results showed the structure of genes in their prostate cells was permanently altered. One key gene was switched on, producing cell-damaging enzyme that has been detected in cancerous prostate cells but not normal cells. These results are in line with previous animal research that shows chemicals can induce genetic changes that alter sperm and other reproductive functions.

Food Remedies To Reduce Risk Of Cancer

Posted on Feb 22, 2007 at 04:01 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Research shows that you can use food to reduce your risk of cancer. The right sort of diet, coupled with a healthy weight and regular exercise, can help prevent about 30 to 40 percent of cancer. In particular, general population studies show that people who eat five or more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables have half the cancer risk of people who eat just two servings a day.

Conversely, research shows that people with cancer have lower intakes of raw and fresh fruits and vegetables. They eat less citrus, leafy green vegetables, carrots, lettuce, and cruciferous vegetables, which are found to help prevent some forms of cancer.

Soy : The Anti-Cancer Food

Posted on Jan 15, 2007 at 10:05 PM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Soy is the name for food made from soybeans. It is one of the few plant foods that contains the proper balance of the eight essential amino acids, making it a valuable protein source. Studies have shown that the most effective cancer blocker in soybeans are the isoflavones. The isoflavone called genistein is the antioxidant power that makes this food fight and inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

To mention a few of the studies that showed results of genistein and it's prevention and protection properties : A Finnish study compared the levels of isoflavones in Japanese and Finnish men. The levels of isoflavones in Japanese men were found to be one hundred times higher. It was observed that the cancer seems to grow so slowly that many Japanese men die without developing clinical disease. The study's conclusion, published in the Lancet, was that maintaining a lifelong concentration of isoflavones in the blood could be the reason Japanese prostate cancers remain latent. Another study by scientists at the University of Alabama (1990) showed that genistein reduced the number of mammary tumors in breast cancer experiments in animals.

Phytonutrients In Preventing Cancer

Posted on Jan 12, 2007 at 04:47 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Plants contain many compounds that not only protect them against such foes as bacteria, fungus, and bad weather but also contain substances that can also prevent disease in humans. The general term for these compounds is phytonutrients or phytochemicals. These phytonutrients have also been recently discovered by scientists to prevent cancer. It help explain why a diet high in fruits and vegetables is associated with lower rates of cancer.

Here are some of the phytonutrients that have recently made news and where you can find them in foods.

* Allium and allyl sulfides in garlic, onions, leeks , found to reduce risk of stomach and colon cancer.

* Anthocyanins, red pigments found in red grape skins, citrus, berries, and yams. These are antioxidants said to protect our body's DNA from damage.

* Catechins protect against stomach cancer and are found in berries and black and green tea.

* Ellagic acid inhibits cancer cells and detoxifies certain carcinogens. Found in fruits and vegetables but particularly high in apples, berries, cherries, grapes, and walnuts, as well as other nuts.

* Indoles are present in broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, turnips, and dark green leafy vegetables. Indoles act on enzymes, which are important to the body's cancer fighting mechanisms.

* Isoflavanoids. Genistein and daidzein found in soybeans appear to deactivate excess estrogen and thus lower the risk of hormonelike cancers of the breast, cervix, and uterus.

* Lignans present in flax seed and whole grains block estrogen and are thought to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

* Lycopenes carotenoids and a redish pigment, are associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer and cancers of the digestive tract. Found in tomatoes, red grapefruit, watermelon, and apricots.

* Monoterpenes help prevent cancer by increasing the production of liver enzymes that detoxify carcinogenic substances.

* P-coumaric acid occur in such common fruits and vegetables as pineapple, strawberries, peppers, and tomatoes. They detoxify nitrosamines which are known to be carcinogenic.

* Polyphenols in green tea are found to lower the risk of stomach cancer.

Immunotherapy, New Hope In Fight Against Cancer

Posted on Dec 7, 2006 at 03:53 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Immunology experts say immunotherapy is now becoming the fourth modality in the fight against cancer, joining other medical cures such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg and colleagues at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md. used a gene therapy approach that transferred tumor-killing genes into the white blood cells of the patients with advanced melanoma, a rare type of skin cancer. The cells multiplied and attacked the tumors in two of their patients. Both have been living cancer-free 19 months after the experiment. The study showed it was possible to transfer cancer-fighting traits into the genes of patients.

Emotions And Cancer

The role of depression in the genesis of cancer has been the subject in a couple of studies. Doctors observed that stress of various types can have an effect on the body's immune functioning which would eventually manifest to the possible development of cancers.

One major evidence for the association of depression with cancer death was provided by a study at the Western Electric Company in Chicago where over two thousand men employed by the company were given the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) Depression Test. For decades these men were monitored ; there was a two-fold increase in the risk for death from cancer associated with higher scores on the depression scale. Depression was an independent predictor of cancer death even after the influences of cigarette smoking, family history of cancer, alcohol, age and occupational status were accounted for.

Another study demonstrated that patients treated with chemotherapy and psychotherapy had longer survival times than those treated with chemotherapy alone. In 1989, a study was published which showed that mental attitude can have significant impact on disease. Women with breast cancer were randomly assigned to either treatment group or a control group. Both group were treated the same in terms of chemotherapy and radiation, the only difference was that the treatment group also met for 90 minutes weekly for one year to address social support issues. The treatment group was approximately 37 months compared with only 19 months in the control group.

How Best To Prevent Colon Cancer

Posted on Nov 29, 2006 at 08:58 AM by Sandra Kim Leong | Comments (0)

There are now many studies on how best to prevent colon cancer as it is a threat that many fear today. Colon cancer usually starts in the large intestine, also known as colon, or the rectum. Colon cancer is caused by the development of dead cells into a lump over a period of time. The risk to getting colon cancer increases if your parents or close relatives have also gotten colon cancer. It seemed that colon cancer is aggravated by unhealthy diets such as ready meals and fast food.

Shark Cartilage For Cancer Prevention?

Posted on Nov 27, 2006 at 03:59 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Cancer specialists have documented the favorable effects of shark cartilage in some of their cancer patients. Shark cartilage is believed to play an important role in preventing and helping treat cancer cells by inhibiting the development of blood vessel growth known as angiogenesis. This helps in killing cancer cells by inhibiting the development of a blood vessel network.

Dr. Michael Meshad, a well-known oncologist in the United States, reported the case of Yoriko "Ruth" Bynum, a 59-year-old resident of Alabama, who was diagnosed to have metastatic lung cancer. Since the cancer has already extensively spread, it was considered a death sentence.

Ruth was given high-dose shark cartilage (80 grams per day) which afforded progressive relief in her symptoms especially the joint and muscle pains, incessant cough and difficulty of breathing. After two months on shark cartilage, Dr. Meshad was amazed that Ruth no longer required oxygen and was fully ambulatory. Repeat chest X-ray showed nearly complete resolution of her lung cancer which further improved with the repeat examination three months later.

Does Caffeine Cause Diseases?

Posted on Nov 24, 2006 at 04:30 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee, tea, carbonated beverages, cocoa, chocolate, and medications. The adverse effects of caffeine have been known for a long time, sleep disturbances; mood changes such as anxiety, depression, and irritability; heartburn and stomach upsets. It has also been suggested that caffeine in coffee may cause cancer of the liver, bladder, kidney and pancreas. But the research used to support these claims was often anecdotal or fraught with inaccuracies such that it was difficult to duplicate or validate. Therefore, the carcinogenicity of caffeine remains controversial.

Currently, caffeine is being reexamined and there are even press releases claiming that coffee has antioxidants that are beneficial for the body. One study of 128,000 men and women reportedly showed no increase in the risk of heart disease from drinking filtered coffee, as published in the Journal Circulation on May 2, 2006. Another conflicting report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in March 2006 says that two or more cups of coffee a day can increase the risk of heart disease in people with a specific genetic mutation that shows the breakdown of caffeine in the body.

Obesity Increases Risk For Cancers

Posted on Nov 21, 2006 at 04:56 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (0)

A study estimated that excess weight may increase the risk of developing cancers of the colon, breast, uterus, kidney, esophagus, pancreas, gallbladder, liver, and top of the stomach. Specialists say that obese people and those with expanding waistlines need to better understand how fat cells fuel cancer growth so they might fight back.

"Obesity makes taking care of cancer patients much more complicated," says Dr. Christopher Desch, a medical oncologists in Richmond, Virginia. Being overweight can make it harder to spot tumors early, catch recurrences, determine the best chemotheraphy dose, and fit into radiation machine.

Weight is most strongly linked to cancer of the uterine lining, or endometrium. An overweight woman has twice the risk of developing that cancer than a lean one; once she becomes obese, the risk rises as much as 3.5 to 5-fold.

Fat is link to breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Fat cells are not just static storage but what is worst is the visceral fat , the most metabolically active that builds up in the abdomen and surrounds organs there, the research revealed. After menopause, fat becomes a woman's leading source of estrogen. While anti-estrogen therapies are common, the fatter the woman is, the harder it is to lower hormone levels, one reason the obese have at least a 50 percent greater chance of dying from breast cancer than lean patients, Dr. Desch said.

Chlorine-based chemicals may be an important factor in the development of breast cancer, says a research group from the Women's Environment Development Organization.

A study released by Greenpeace titled "Chlorine, Human Health & the Environment : Breast Cancer Warning," found :

* Women with the highest concentration of chlorine-based pesticides and chemicals in their blood were four to ten times more at risk than women with lower concentration.

* Chlorine-based chemicals including pesticides and materials used to make vinyl had caused cancer in laboratory animals.

* Women exposed to the chemicals in the workplace often have unusually high rates of breast cancer. US countries with hazardous waste sites are six and a half times more likely to have a higher breast cancer rate.

* Breast cancer mortality rates in Israel decreased sharply when it banned several-chlorine based pesticides while rates in other states rose.

It is possible to prevent esophagus cancer by managing your acid reflux symptoms. If you have acid reflux, your doctor would be recommending that you be more careful about your diet. To manage acid reflux symptoms, there are also over the counter and prescription drugs available.

Esophagus cancer occurs in the esophagus near the stomach. Tiny tumors develop which will eventually spread to other parts of the body. It is possible to prevent esophagus cancer by managing your acid reflux symptoms as cancer is caused when the lining of the esophagus is removed by the acid in the stomach. Very often, your body will cover the inside of the esophagus with protective tissue. However, this new tissue could become cancerous.

Fighting A Rare Cancer Called Mesothelioma

This is the story of Dr. Stephen Jay Gould, a Harvard paleontologist professor, and how he faced the Big C with a lot of attitude and courage.

In July of 1982, at the age of 40, the American writer and professor, Stephen Jay Gould was diagnosed with a rare cancer called abdominal mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a serious cancer usually associated with exposure to asbestos. Being a scientist, he researched and waded into the medical literature to find out more about the disease. He describes what he found : " The literature couldn't have been more brutally clear. Mesothelioma is incurable, with a median mortality of only eight months after discovery."

In other cases , when we feel vulnerable or affected by the research findings, we tend to be intimidated. But not Gould. His swords of battle are numerous but what stands out was his attitude and sanguine personality in fighting the cancer. He did not allow himself to be overwhelmed by the negative statistics of eight months. To him the statistic is not his destiny but an abstract. After the diagnosis, he tried experimental treatment of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and even taking the cannabis or marijuana.

A Case Of A Cancer Patient Treated With Vitamin B17

Posted on Oct 25, 2006 at 05:31 AM by Teresita C. Tayanes | Comments (3)

Here's a case of a cancer patient and her story of how an alternative approach, the non-toxic metabolic treatment of cancer using Vitamin B17 or amygdalin made her the longest living cancer patient in the Philippines so far treated with this vitamin.

Mrs. Carmen Gutierrez from Manila is the case in point. She had undergone the removal of her right breast (radical mastectomy) and also removal of her ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy) followed by radiation. In 1960, though feeling well, she wanted to know if she had still cancer. The Philippine Cancer Society (PCS) made several laboratory tests and X-ray scans of her chest and bones but found nothing wrong. However, her urine test was found positive of cancer, indicating the presence of malignancy. The doctor who developed this inexpensive and non-invasive Beta-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) Immunoassay test was Dr. Manuel Navarro. The screening test detects HCG in urine indicating the presence of cancer cells even before signs or symptoms are revealed.

Possible Cure For Leukemia?

Leukemia is a type of cancer. All cancers begin in cells, which make up blood and other tissues. Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old, they die, and new cells take their place.

Sometimes the process goes wrong and new cells form when the body doesn't need them and old cells don't die when they should. The exact reason for this is not known. Scientist only know, for sure, what is happening in the body to create the cancer.

A doctor at the Department of Veterinary Bio-sciences at Ohio State University is researching the connection between leukemia and measles, and how measles might be a potential cure for leukemia.

Prevent Colon Cancer Through Colon Cleansing
By Sandra Kim Leong

The colon fulfills very important functions in our bodies. The colon's job is to retain water and nutrients into our bodies and help us eliminate waste. American diets are low in fiber and in fact, many do not drink enough water. Good sources of fiber is found in vegetables and fruits.

The low level of fiber prevents the colon from cleaning itself. This results in a buildup of toxic matter in the colon. The buildup of toxic matter in the colon can lead to many health problems, the most serious of which is colon cancer. A toxic body also means a weakened immune system and the body's inability to fight disease and illness.

Surgery: It is the mainstay of treatment for majority of patients especially when the cancer is localized to the site of origin. The different types of surgery done are:

1> Polypectomy - In this procedure, the colonoscope is introduced into the large intestine as described above and small growths or polyps are removed surgically through the colonoscope. It does not require anesthesia and can be done in the outpatients department.

2> Local Resection of Cancer - It is generally suitable for small rectal cancer restricted to superficial area. With patient under suitable anesthesia, the surgeon dilates the anal opening. The surgical instrument is now introduced into the rectum through dilated anal opening and a circle of cancerous tissue with a small surrounding margin of healthy tissue is excised. The defect is closed with stitches.

Cancer of the Colon is the cancer of large intestine and its lower part, rectum which opens to the exterior at anal opening. It is also called colorectal cancer. 75% of the colorectal cancers occur in the rectum and rest in the large intestine. It is the second most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Both men and women are equally affected especially after 40 years of age. It is interesting to know that about 80% of colorectal cancers occur in cases without any significant risk factors.

1> Chemo Radiotherapy - Generally, in the treatment of lymphoma, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are used together as a combination therapy. Chemotherapy involves intravenous use of cytotoxic drugs to kill cancer cell while radiotherapy uses high energy X rays to kill the cancer cells and reduce the tumor size. Radiotherapy is more locally oriented. It mainly focuses on the known sites of the tumor either site of origin or metastasis. Chemotherapy is the systemic treatment as the drug given intravenously reaches every nook and corner of the body and kills the cancer cells wherever they are present. Commonly used drugs in combination for chemotherapy are doxorubicin, Adriamycin, vincristine and vinblatin.

1> Physical Examination - A complete clinical examination is done to detect enlarged lymph nodes in neck, armpit and groin. Abdominal examination is done to detect enlarged liver or spleen. Relevant history of illnesses, infections & health problems in the past is asked.

2> Blood Tests - This is done to rule out anemia due to underproduction of red blood cells. It also rules out infections & other diseases. When examined under microscope it may show the cancerous cells present in the blood. It is possible to detect cancer related enzymes present in the blood by chemical tests.

1> Oncogenes - These genes are formed by mutation of the normal genes during the cycle of cell division. They help the normal cells to escape from the control of the body over their growth. These aberrant cells develop further in the cancerous growth.

2> Organic Substances - Fumes of the organic solvents as used in plastic and polymer industry reach blood through lungs. Organic pesticides sprayed over food grains to prevent them from pests reach blood through stomach. Herbicides sprayed over fruits and vegetables also reach blood through stomach. Excessive nitrate in the manures added to the farm land is carried by the water and if drunk is absorbed by the stomach. Chronic exposure to all these substances can cause cancer.

Lymphoma - Cancer of Lymphatic System

Posted on Dec 14, 2005 at 01:04 AM by Dr. Kiran Paranjape | Comments (2)

Cancer of the lymphatic system of the body is called lymphoma. Lymphoma develops when the cells of this system grow haphazardly in an uncontrolled manner. As the main function of the lymphatic system is to fight against the infections & foreign material entering the body, the lymphatic system is spread throughout the body. Hence these tumors can practically develop anywhere in the body in the form of painless lump or swollen gland.

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Lung Cancer

Posted on Dec 9, 2005 at 04:23 AM by Dr. Kiran Paranjape | Comments (0)

"Recurrent Episodic Chest Pain" is the earliest symptom of Lung Cancer. However, the most frequent cause of chest pain is cardio-vascular insufficiency i.e. heart attack which needs to be ruled out by an electrocardiogram. The pain in lung cancer is constant dull aching type while in heart attack it has a sharp shooting nature. As the tumor grows and invades the healthy tissue, its ability to transfer oxygen in the air to blood decreases and patient develops "shortness of breath". Invasion by cancer cells makes the lung tissue non-functional. This dead tissue is invaded by air born bacteria causing "repeated episodes of pneumonia".

Lung Cancer accounts for nearly 15% of all cancers. It is growing steadily over the past decades mainly due to changing socio-environmental circumstances such as increased smoking habits and increase in environmental pollution. As the lungs have primary importance to the existence of an individual, the lung cancer invariably causes decrease in the functional output of the affected person. The survival rates are low with lung cancers. Hence prevention is best cure.

Causative Factors of Lung Cancer

Smoking

The first and foremost cause of lung cancer is smoking either active or passive.

Laser Surgery

A concentrated high energy light beam is used to evaporate the abnormal cells. The advantage of this procedure is that it can be set how deep to reach up to fractions of millimeters. It can fully & completely destroy the abnormal cells. As it uses high energy the blood vessels also get coagulated minimizing the chances of bleeding post operatively.

The prostate gland is one of the glands required for reproduction. It is present only in males. It is situated at the neck of the urinary bladder surrounding the urethra i.e. the tube through which the urine stored in urinary bladder is excreted out. The prostate secretes prostatic fluid. This fluid acts as a nutritional fluid to the sperms produced in testicles and stored in seminal vesicles. During sexual intercourse, the muscles surrounding the prostate contract and the prostatic fluid with the sperms stored in seminal vesicles is ejaculated out through urethra.
