Prom season is upon us. How will you wear your hair for prom? Find out the 6 most popular hair styles for prom this season.

Every year about this time, teenagers scramble to pull together their prom outfit. One item that is often overlooked until the last minute is Prom Hair Styles. How you wear your hair is almost as important as your dress.

Most people will notice your face and hair first, before your dress. Being prepared with an awesome hair style will make you a winner on prom night.

Check out the 4 popular hair styles for prom this year.

1. The messy, tousled updo. This is a hair style that features wispy strands hanging down in front and a loose, pulled back updo. A great way to create this style is to section of the front of the hair, from ear to ear. Then pull back the back of the hair and twist into a low or high chignon, pinning into place. Then split the hair in the front into 5 different sections. Spray each section with hair spray and pull it back separately, pinning it into the chignon. Leave out a few strands to either finger curl, or flat iron smooth.

2. The sleek and smooth updo: This is the neat, polished hair style that is kept very smooth. To create this style, apply a styling cream and blow dry the hair straight using a large round brush. Apply a smoothing cream or gel and pull all hair back neatly and twist into a chignon or bun. For added effect, attach a hairpiece to the chignon/bun and add a decorative ribbon or headband in the front.

3. The half-updo: This style features only the crown area being pulled back into a low ponytail. Create this style on your own by back-combing sections in the crown area, creating extra volume and height. Smooth the top with your fingers and pull the hair in the crown area back into a ponytail. For extra smoothness, you can apply styling or smoothing cream only to the ponytail part. This way your roots will not appear greasy from all the hair products. For added dramatic effect, leave out some fringe bangs and use a flat iron to make them stay side-swept.

4. The pony-tail updo: Who ever thought that pony tails would be worn for formal occasions? They are the IN style now. And things couldn't get any easier for styling your hair. To create the pony tail hair style, back comb sections of the crown and sides to create volume. Then smooth all hair back into a high ponytail. Add styling or smoothing cream to the hair in the pony tail and flat iron it for extra smooth results. Finish off the style with large hoop or dangling earrings.

5. The curly updo: Curls are in style. Any kind of curl will do--corkscrew curls, small ringlets, large bouncy waves and more. To create this style, apply a curl enhancing cream and blow dry your hair using a diffuser and your fingers for styling. Next, add the curls throughout using a curling iron, hot rollers or even velcro rollers. Allow curls to cool completely before working with them. Pull all hair back into a ponytail. Split the pony tail in half above the ponytail holder and pull the hair in the pony tail through the opening. Position all the curls and pin any loose strands in place.

6. The curly down-do: Once again, going with the popular trend today---Curls. Leave your hair down and curly. It will look fabulous. To create this style, apply curl enhancing cream or gel and blow dry the hair using a diffuser. Follow the directions above for the curly updo by adding curls throughout. A great trick that some celebrities use is to use different sizes of curling irons to create depth and dimension in the curly hair style. Finally blast your hair with a finishing spray to keep all the curls in place. Then go have some fun!
