Our love of digital cameras seems to be because the results are instant as film is no longer required to be processed. Storing the information as digital-bytes is how this type of camera keeps the pictures you have taken, safe and ready to view, store or print! The images are stored in a format that can be read by most modern printers, computers and even mobile phones for example. Although the images are stored in electronic form, there is no discernable difference in the picture you see when it is printed out.

Focusing light through a lens onto a suitable receptive surface is still common to both types of camera. All the budding digital camera enthusiast needs to know is that despite the difference in how the image is captured, the ultimate effect is the same. A feature of the better quality versions is they have a sensor that converts light into electrical charges using a different system to their less expensive cousins. The CMOS device is used in cheaper cameras and does the same work as a CCD but it is doubtful that this system will replace those devices in the quality models.

The price has been depreciating recently and one of the main reasons for this is the introduction of CMOS image sensors; because CMOS sensors are less expensive and are easier to manufacture than CCD sensors. Although the images in a digital camera end up the same, the CCD and CMOS sensors capture light differently; the causal observer would probably never notice this difference though. If you find yourself in the market for one of these marvelous cameras then some useful information is detailed in this article. Look for models with over 6 megapixels and you won't go far wrong as they will provide decent images; you may find a model that is being superseded shortly - available at a discount.

Unless your budget just won't stretch that far, don't buy a digital camera with only a digital zoom or you will find pictures that aren't very clear when you print them; it is much easier to take exactly the image you want with an optical zoom. One way in which you can save money is to use batteries that can be recharges over and over saving you hundreds of dollars over their lifetime. Many people are just happy to point and shoot but if you want to do a little more then try to buy one with more functions; just like some of these here:

  • Picture frame effects
  • Time lapse (i.e. one shot every 5 minutes for example)
  • Panoramic images

With large megapixel models, image storage is another issue to look out for and a storage card will be necessary. Digital storage has come down in price so buying gigabyte card will no longer require a loan but you shouldn't think of having anything less than this.

For photographers who will keep the camera with them at all time you may want to consider one of the more compact types that can be carried in a shirt pocket. Why carry around something that is going to make you neck ache when it is not necessary; unless you are a professional photographer of course. Hopefully, these few tips will be enough to steer you in the right direction when you come to buy your camera. Digital cameras are here to stay but expect even greater advancements in the future.
