Many people are motivated to become entrepreneurs, go into business, and later realized that the potential to succeed in business is very limited. Entrepreneurship certainly isn't for everybody. However, if you accurately assess yourself, you might find that it's exactly right for you.

According to Douglas A. Gray, author of the book "The Entrepreneur's Complete Self-Assessment Guide," most people start a business without ever assessing a thorough appraisal of themselves and their personal, family and business needs and goals. To ensure success, Gray asserts, a start-up entrepreneur needs to focus in strong points, identify weaknesses, and deal with the areas that need improvement. Here's some of his tips to assess your potential to succeed in business:

1. Skill as on top of his list. Identify what you're best at, and enjoy most, to determine what business suits you. You must also have the appropriate personality as some fields require an extroverted, people-oriented personality such as marketing or sales. Other such in IT consultancy requires an analytical and intellectual demeanor

2. Assess your personal interest, hobbies, social or community activities, current or past jobs, likes and dislikes, and lifestyle. These are part of who you are and may have significant bearing on your business decisions.

3. Look ahead is one good way of assessing yourself. Imagine yourself 20 years from now. Describe what your ideal lifestyle and work style would be. Consider where you would like to live, who your close friends are likely to be, your income involvement in family, work, community, religion activities, vacation and recreational lifestyle and material possessions.

List what you perceive to be strong and weak point in each category, then reflect on the impact that self- employment will have on them.
