We like to think we are invincible but accidents happen all the time so even if you are the safest driver, it is worth taking out personal injury protection. This is also a case of looking after other people you are responsible for in addition to paying off loans for instance. Unfortunately, any insurance policy is expensive (no matter how important) and many of the most vulnerable families that this would benefit just cannot afford to add another plan to their portfolio. With the growing number of insurance plans on the market, all of which sound necessary, each family has to weigh up the benefits against the additional financial strain that can be imposed by adding it.
It is often the case that it was arranged without the full range of cover looked at so may be inappropriate to the needs of the customer. Not every state has made this law yet but a few have although the amount of protection does vary considerably. This difference is highlighted by the amount of cover required by a driver in Alaska being ten times the amount required by a similar driver in Florida. Although there are still some states that have not passed a law on personal injury protection at this time, there is no reason why you should wait until it has before you arrange it.
However, the protection does not cover all the costs for the insured and his (or her) passengers, with the average policy paying up to eighty percent of expenses. As a no fault policy though, the plan pays for loss of earnings, medical expenses and various other costs for the policy holder and his passengers even if the insured was responsible for the situation. Before you purchase this type of cover, you would be advised to take a look at your current policies and see whether or not the areas covered by the proposed plan are not already duplicated in other insurance plans. By checking carefully you may discover that certain costs like medical bills and other expenses are already part of your current cover.
So, the good news is that in some cases, no further cover will be required whereas you may have to arrange a small policy in others. Drivers that have more than their fair share of accidents are more likely to require personal injury protection even though it may cost them more. Fortunately most drivers will probably find themselves covered by their own health insurance policy which will also protect family members that happen to be passengers. Needless to say, if you find that the cover afforded by the personal injury protection is insufficient for passengers then you will have to top this cover up.
Remember, the safety of a passenger in your car is always going to be your responsibility. If you live in a state that does not have mandatory personal injury protection you may want to add this into your portfolio. Your personal circumstances will dictate just how much insurance you need so the better your health is and the less claims you have made, will help to reduce the policy costs overall. Younger drivers however, do not fair so well if they are inexperienced with little insurance cover in place but they are often in greater need of good health insurance cover to protect themselves and any family they have.
