This is an update on Dr. Mani's 24 hour Blogathon.
The blogathon is over and almost $22,000 has been raised! Last year during the 2005 Heart Kids Blogathon $7,125 was raised, so that is quite an increase over last year. You can still donate to this worthy cause. The following is a recap of the blogathon.
On Saturday September 9th, Indian heart surgeon Dr.Mani Sivasubramanian held a blogathon to raise money for children in India who are born with heart defects. The doctor, known to many as Dr. Mani, stayed awake for a 24-hour, day-and-night blogging marathon.
Dr. Mani founded a nonprofit organization in 2003 to raise money to sponsor life-saving treatments for poor children. Dr. Mani's hobby is internet marketing and he uses his expertise in internet marketing as the major source of funding for his nonprofit organization.
There are an estimated 1 million children with heart birth defects in India alone. Fewer than 3% will receive an operation necessary to save their lives - unless they get help. The cost of cardiac surgery in India is approximately $2,200. Even though that is much lower than other developed countries, it is still an astronomical figure for families in India with a monthly income of $300 or less.
The 2006 blogathon was the fourth annual Heart Kids Blogathon. The foundation has raised over $40,000 in 3 years and has already funded 13 heart operations with more to follow.
Dr. Mani's foudation spends no money on marketing and depends on a loyal, rapidly growing group of volunteers, donors and supporters, guided by the doctor-marketer, to handle almost every aspect of spreading the word about this global effort.
