In my last post I wrote about The Great American Bake Sale. This is a national campaign that encourages everyone to help end childhood hunger in America by hosting a bake sale in their community and sending the proceeds to Share Our Strength.
Bake sales are a popular way to make money for small organizations. Most people enjoy participating in bake sales and love to sample other people's baked creations. An organization my son once belonged to held a huge annual fall bake sale always made around $1,500 every year. Fall was a good time of year for a bake sale because people bought baked goods to use during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.
I recommend visiting the website of the Great American Bake Sale to get ideas for your next bake sale. On the website you can read the blog which features recipes and stories about the different types of bake sales that groups have held
Here are some ideas and tips for bake sales:
Pricing - A Girl Scout Troop held a bake sale and did not have individual pricing on their baked goods. Instead, they asked for donations in the amount that people felt they wanted to give. The troop ended up making far more money that way. Some people would give a $20.00 donation in exchange for a small baked treat. One gentleman gave them a check for $100.OO and had to persuaded to take a bake sale item.
Items to sell - Pans of brownies at $8.00 were fast sellers for a Cub Scout Troop. Selling larger items, such as cakes and pies is more lucrative than selling baggies of a couple of cookies. Speaking of cookies, chocolate chip cookies are everyone's favorite bake sale cookie.
Incentives - Some children in Madison, Connecticut, were creative by including a raffle ticket and a delicious baked good to each customer for a one dollar donation. At the end of the bake sale, a ticket was picked and the lucky winner received a huge M&M ice cream cake.
When you visit the website at www.greatamericanbakesale.org you can register for a bake sale. I contacted Share our Strength and found out that they are changing the time frame for the yearly bake sales. The next season starts in the spring of 2007.
