Basically a digital camera is a device use to capture pictures without the use of film. With numerous functions they do not need the complicated mechanical components of a standard film camera. Since the images captured are in electronic form, this is a language recognized by computers. These images are stored as pixels; essentially a small dot digitally represented by 1's and 0's which certain equipment can read.

In many respects this type of camera is similar to its conventional cousin with a series of lenses which capture an image. Instead of film the digital camera captures the light with the aid of a system which records the light rays digitally. A charge couple device is the light capturing device in the quality models that is used to convert light into electrical signals and as far as the user is concerned, an image is saved just like an ordinary device. While other low-end models use complementary metal oxide semiconductor or CMOS as an image device, most developers do not believe that it will replace the CCD for higher end cameras.

In order to bring digital photography to the masses, the price had to come down; an expensive part of the system is the capture device, so by replacing the CCD with the CMOS device it enabled the price to be reduced. A digital camera works where millions of tiny solar cells, each of which forms a part of the whole image; both CCD and CMOS do this task using different methods. Shopping for one of these types of camera can be daunting but a few tips can make all the difference. From the point of view on having good quality photos, search for a high megapixel version as it will be worth it for the image you will capture with it; they can also provide prints that are larger without any degradation.

Better photos will be taken with a digital camera that has an optical zoom and not just a digital zoom; even a camera with a three times optical zoom is worth having. Rechargeable batteries are the best you can use with the NMIH versions able to be charged at anytime, even if they are not fully discharged; this will save money on batteries that are disposable. If it is possible, try to buy a model with many functions as you will be able to create some stunning effects; just like some of these here:

  • Picture frame effects
  • B/W image conversion
  • Mosaic effect shots

With large megapixel models, image storage is another issue to look out for and a storage card will be necessary. With higher resolution models now the norm, forget anything lower than 1GB of storage space if you want to save the image at the highest resolution.

If you are going to be taking your camera everywhere, choose a handy and portable model. Professional photographers may need heavy, bulky equipment but there is no requirement for a keen amateur to do so! There has only been room for a few basic hints and tips here but they should help with your choice of camera. The digital camera has reinvented photography for the masses and this is a trend that looks set to continue.
