In fact it is the off-page optimization that can get your website to the top. But this does not mean that on-page optimization can be ignored because off-page optimization is far more effective when on-page optimization is in place.

10 Google Search Engine Ranking Tips
Posted on Jul 3, 2006 at 01:11 PM by Michael Ralph
| Comments (0)
I know many of you watch your Google results almost daily, I recently found the following tips on getting into a good position with Google and I thought I'd pass them on to you!
1.. Wait a few days. During an update, it is common that ranking drops, but in a matter of days, the site often crawls its way back to the top.
2.. Diversify. Instead of making Google your principle traffic supplier, arrange it so that you expect 10-20% of hits will come from there. There are lots of other search engines that accept paid inclusion and paid placement. In addition, good old-fashioned marketing techniques in the real world can make a big difference.
3.. Content continues to reign supreme. Most Googlites (Google users) view the web as a library rather than a shopping mall. Update your webpage content every day, at least 200-300 words worth, making sure it is relevant and compelling. Remember that people aren't searching for your content, they are searching for their own-a concept that changes with each user depending on their personal paradigms. So varied, updated content can help match up with some unpredictable keyword choices.
4.. Avoid duplicate content. This is incredibly important if you're running several websites at a time, or using "doorway" pages to your main site. Having pages with identical content is a surefire way for Google to drop your listing.
5.. Site design is the stepchild of good online marketing. Though an algorithm is clueless about how nice your site looks, people viewing it do notice and this will increase your click-throughs. Sites heavy on HTML and light on text, however, are a bad idea, as search engine spiders pick up text mostly. A good balance of design and simplicity coupled with easily read content is probably the best bet. Even better, have lots of breaks in text to accommodate the majority of net readers that scan pages, rather than read them in their entirety. It takes 25% longer to read from a computer screen than from paper.
6.. Remember that there is a balance of keywords required. If your pages use the keywords excessively, red flags pop up all over the Google world and they might tag you for spamming. A good rule of thumb is to keep keyword density below 20% of content.
7.. Linking in the Internet world is what networking is to the outside world. Always include links to other sites that relate to your subject matter and try to utilize link swapping as much as possible. Other people want their site recognized too, so most are more than happy to trade links with you. The more your site is referenced on other sites, the more it affects your page ranking.
8.. Try to keep the gloves up. Don't try to trick the algorithms with"black hat" techniques like hidden image links and burying the link inside the background. This will get you banned for sure. Avoid Java script redirection and IP cloaking.
9.. It is impossible to create a page that pleases everybody. Try to think in terms of target users, who the typical viewer of your site is going to be. If you sell baby car seats, don't have content about the Chinese socio-economic politics.
10.. It's so important I have to say it again. CONTENT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF YOUR WEBSITE. Content content content content.
Four Simple Methods to get your Web Site Google Banned.
Posted on Jun 26, 2006 at 01:41 PM by Michael Ralph
| Comments (0)
There are many Black Hat techniques that people use to try and influence Googles ranking of their sites, the simple thing to remember is that THEY DO NOT help your rankings, are simply a waste of your time and sooner or later will lead to a Google ban for your site. Sure there are sites that use these techniques and are getting away with it but they will eventually get penalised as Google always manages to find them eventually.
As I said please avoid using these techniques :
Alt Image Tag Stuffing
This is a way that webmasters try to 'force fill' keywords into their website, thus the search engines can see these keywords and their site visitors see no difference at all to layout and an excessive use of certain words.
What happens is that webmasters insert graphic's that relate to their subject and then add an alt image tag to it. The search engines see this but a visitor will only see it if they hover over the graphic and a pop up will appear.
What you tend to find is that mis-informed webmasters add multiple instances of the keywords that they are targetting with a view to increasing key word density when the search bots visit the page.
The real purpose of an alt image tag is if the web site graphic doesn't load then the text will appear instead of the graphic, this is particularly important if a visually impaired visitor gets to your site.
My advice would be to keep it simple, use your keyword once and use the tags to present an accurate description of the graphic.
Hidden Text
Hidden Text is simply text that visitors to your site cannot see when they visit your webpage(s). Its used for the same reasons as described in the alt tag example. All that is involved is the webmaster adds the text (usually keyword spam) to the page in the same colour as the background and as such it becomes invisible to the human eye but gets picked up by the search engine bots.
Meta Tag Stuffing
Meta Tags are vital parts of the make up of a web page but again abusing them with a view to influencing the search engine bots can cause you problems. Basically the keyword tag is loaded with hundreds, even thousands, of the exact same keyword into the tag. For example, the tagetted keyword is DVD and the meta tag looks like:
The important thing to remember is that Google does not use this tag to rank your page due to wide scale abuse so why bother, it is also a pretty rediculous thing to do.
Title Tag Stuffing
The same principle as above but using the title tag, use your keyword once in the title as that is sufficient.
If you have to resort to black hat techniques then the set up of your site is wrong and they will eventually lead to the site being panalised. Its a pure waste of effort, they dont work and could kill your site.

Thieves - identify the leaches!
It is so very depressing, but certainly a tragic fact that people STEAL from you.
When you enter a link such as "www.domain.name/?id=xxxxx", some people won't click on the link, but will happily copy and paste the rest of it into their browsers without the identification number. You should DO something about this. See what you CAN do...

Search Engine Optimisation versus Viewer Optimisation

Every webmaster knows the value that the search engines can bring to their site, you here a lot being said about the value of being ranked number one in the search engines. I say don't get to tied up in getting to number one and just concentrate on getting a good position for your chosen keyword/phrase and supplement it with good positions for other less competitive but related keywords/phrase.
A few tips I would like to pass on are:
Diversify your traffic supplier targeting. Instead of making Google your principle traffic supplier, expect to get 20-40% of hits from them. The erst you should aim to get from other search engines, there are literally thousands out there but the biggest two are Yahoo and MSN. Of these two MSN is easier to get into and can provide a great number of visitors with a little 'specific search engine targeting', there is multitudes of information about targeting specific search engines and a quick 'Google' will ironically tell you how.
Content continues to reign supreme. Most Googlites (Google users) view the web as a library rather than a shopping mall. Update your web page content every day, at least 200-300 words worth, making sure it is relevant and compelling. Remember that people aren't searching for your content, they are searching for information relating to a word, phrase or subject. Remember, a concept changes with each user depending on their personal expectations and views. So varied, updated content can help match up with some unpredictable keyword choices.
Avoid duplicate content. This is incredibly important if you're running several websites at a time, or using "doorway" pages to your main site. Having pages with identical content is a surefire way for Google to drop your listing.
Remember that there is a balance of keywords required. If your pages use the keywords excessively, red flags pop up all over the Google world and they might tag you for spamming. A good rule of thumb is to keep keyword density below 20% of content.
Linking is what the Internet is all about, this is how information is exchanged and the basis upon which the search engines and the internet itself were built. Always include links to other sites that relate to your subject matter and try to utilize link exchanges as much as possible. Other people want their site recognized too, so most are more than happy to trade links with you. The more your site is referenced on other sites, the more it affects your page ranking.
Try to keep the gloves up. Don't try to trick the algorithms with"black hat" techniques like hidden image links and burying the link inside the background. This will get you banned for sure. Avoid Java script redirection and IP cloaking.
One of the most important things to remember with search engine optimization for ranking is that you CAN overdo things, search engines are computer programs and as such react to information in a different manner than a human visitor would. Excessive SEO can result in a page that holds no value to a visitor and although it will rank high will not get the benefit of this ranking as when a human gets there they will simple close it down and go to one that is easier to understand and makes sense. Its all about finding the balance between search engine optimization and viewer optimisation.
