eBay: The First 10 Years.

Posted on May 27, 2008 at 03:42 PM by Bobby Rizigliano | Comments (0)

Yes, you read that correctly: ten years. eBay was created in September 1995, by a man called Pierre Omidyar, who was living in San Jose. He wanted his site - then called 'AuctionWeb' - to be an online marketplace, and wrote the first code for it in one weekend. It was one of the first websites of its kind in the world. The name 'eBay' comes from the domain Omidyar used for his site. His company's name was Echo Bay, and the 'eBay AuctionWeb' was originally just one part of Echo Bay's website at ebay.com. The first thing ever sold on the site was Omidyar's broken laser pointer, which he got $14 for.

Entrepreneurial Marketing: Getting Noticed on eBay and Beyond

I thought this was a great article by Stuart Lisonbee, Doba Education Specialist

Search for a product on eBay or any number of other online marketplaces, and you're likely to find yourself inundated with product listings that look pretty much the same. All things being equal, you're going to click the item offering the lowest price, right? Or maybe you weigh price and trustworthiness, and you order the product from the big-name retailer that offers the lowest price. After all, when prices are comparable, why would you risk ordering from an unknown merchant?

How Much Money Can You Make on eBay?

Posted on Oct 29, 2007 at 03:11 AM by Ryan Horne | Comments (2)

Have you ever read an article about eBay talking about the insane incomes people make? It's not unusual to hear of people earning thousands of dollars or more each and every month on eBay alone.

Next time you're on eBay, take a look at how many PowerSellers there are, you are sure to find quite a few. Now think about this. Every single one of one of them must be making at least $1,000 per month, because that is the requirement eBay has set for becoming a PowerSeller. Silver PowerSellers make at least $3,000 each month, while Gold Sellers make more than $10,000, and the Platinum level is $25,000. The highest rank you can have is Titanium PowerSeller, and to qualify you must make at least $150,000 in sales every month!

Internet marketeers promise you their version - at a fee.
For xx$ they will reveal "golden nuggets" about so and so, and how you can achieve this and that in only xx days.

What would you say if somebody offered you this information FOR FREE?
If that person told you the very truth: that the results are defined by your willingness to ACT upon what you read?

You might even think the person was insane for revealing it for free, but nothing could be further FROM the truth.

The market is big enough for all of us, so keep reading. :-)

Ebay - How Does It Work Continued

Ebay is a great place for someone who has some "stuff" to sell. Once you have gotten your feet wet so to speak, you may be interested in opening up an Ebay store. This is a great idea around the holidays. What you need to do is visit Ebay yourself and see what people are buying. Ebay will list the best sellers for that week on the home page of their website, but a good rule of thumb is to find something inexpensive, fun, usable, go to Ebay and do a little bit of research. . .

Don't Get Caught by the Mobile Phone Matrix Scams

Posted on Jul 14, 2006 at 06:00 PM by Michael Ralph | Comments (0)

The mobile phone matrix scam has fast become one of the largest growing scams on the internet at the moment and is abundant on many of the internet auction sites, these mobile phone scams offer mobiles for as little as £20. This sounds very enticing and people readily sign up, however the majority of the members never actually see the promised goods.

How do they work?

The definition given by trading standards (of a matrix scheme) in their report into current scams sums it up very nicely :

Consumers who buy the product become members of a waiting list to receive their chosen ‘free gift’. The matrix works by sending the person at the top of the list their ‘free gift’ only after a prescribed number of new recruits has signed up – the prescribed number varies according to the choice of ‘free gift’ but can be as great as 100. Once the ‘free gift’ has been sent, the remaining members each move up one place on the waiting list. The person who has moved to the top then has to wait until the prescribed number of new recruits has signed up again in order to receive their ‘free gift’. Although it is not compulsory for members to sign up new recruits, they are encouraged to do so in order to move themselves up the waiting list faster. This has led to some members placing misleading adverts on internet auction sites offering the ‘opportunity to buy a mobile phone for £20′, in order to seek new recruits.

So basically the early members are paid out only when sufficient new members have joined under them, the maths behind this are absolutely staggering. I have used a simple example of a scheme that operates on a ten tier matrix with an entry price of £20 and a gadget price of £150.

Member #1 pays: they are, “the member to get the mobile phone ”

Member #2 pays: Scammers Fund is £40.

Member #3 pays: Scammers Fund is £60.

Member #4 pays: Scammers Fund is £80.

Member #5 pays: Scammers Fund is £100.

Member #6 pays: Scammers Fund is £120.

Member #7 pays: Scammers Fund is £140.

Member #8 pays: Scammers Fund is £160.

Member #9 pays: Scammers Fund is £180.

Member #10 pays: Scammers Fund is £200.

Once the member count reaches 10 member #1 ‘cycles’ and receives their gift, so the mobile phone matrix website makes £50 (£200 scammers fund - £150 cost of gadget). Member #2 then moves into prime position and the process starts over again. When member #2 ‘cycles’, the website will make another £50 and another 10 members will have had to have joined.

Using that example, the figures seem quite good, however the majority of these mobile phone scam sites offer mobiles worth £300-£600 and as such they need to increase the tiers (or the entry price) so as to cover thier costs and make money. If they operated a 100 tier scheme then the 100th member would need another 1000 to have joined before they see their gadget! Some sites have been found to be operating 1000 or 10000 tier systems!

Here today, gone tomorrow!

The mobile phone matrix scheme, like all pyramid selling schemes, eventually gets to a point where it is unable to attract sufficient numbers of new members. It then collapses and those still waiting for their gadget are left holding the can as they cannot move forward without new members. What tends to happen now is that the people held in the tiers of the matrix try to promote the scheme further through the use of websites, forums and the auction sites and this further compounds the problem and just lines the scammers pockets further.

Remember, these mobile phone matrix sites only make their main money in the beginning as people join, once this starts to dry up the scammers move onto other things leaving the lists to collapse. Also it is key to remember that most of these scammers never actually send the goods even if you get to ‘cycle’ and the majority of names and claims made by the sites are all fake.

Final thoughts

Please remember that these mobile phone matrix schemes are ILLEGAL, if you see one on a site or an auction site then please report it to trading standards (for singular websites) and also report it to the auction sites (most have rules regarding these sites).

The simple way not to get taken for a ride is not to get involved in the mobile phone matrix’s in the first place.

I will sum it up in one statement when dealing with mobile phone matrix schemes :

If the deal sounds to good to be true, THEN IT IS

Just a little update...

Paypal now state in their terms and conditions:

"You may not use PayPal to send or receive payments for any form of multi-level marketing programs (including online payment randomizers), as well as matrix, pyramid and Ponzi schemes, "get rich quick" scheme, or other similar ventures."

AND

The Uk Office of Fair Trading (OFT) recently included Matrix Schemes in a list of top ten scams as part of "Scams Awareness Month".

This gives you an indication of the scams widescale reach, please please avoid them all.

Ebay stores/shops – are they really worth it?

Posted on Jul 9, 2006 at 07:11 PM by Michael Ralph | Comments (0)

Wherever you look on the internet there is someone that has an opinion on what works and what doesn't on Ebay, well I am no different but whereas most opinions banded around have no basis mine are all based on the hard facts from actually ‘doing it' or ‘having done it'.

The question that gets asked regularly is: “Ebay stores/shops – are they really worth it?”

Well the simple answer is, in my opinion, damn right they are! Why? You ask, well let me explain. Ebay has got huge traffic passing through its sites on a daily basis, not many selling venues can compete with it and as such this is what you want to capitalise on.

Most Ebay sellers that claim to want to make a living off Ebay simply think that listing an item for sale will ensure a profit that can be turned into a business…how wrong they are! Nothing in life is free, this is especially true when starting up and maintaining a business.

Why would someone expect that using an Ebay store/shop to make a living would be any easier than making it from your own web site?

One of the biggest issues raised about Ebay is its fees, personally I am quite happy with them all things considered but hey not everyone is like me. Ebay stores/shops allow for listings to be made at a fraction of the cost of standard listings, for example, a no bells and whistles standard auction listing costs $0.20/£0.15 for 10 days whereas with a shop it costs $0.02/£0.03 for 30 days thus giving three times the potential exposure for a fraction of the outlay. The only drawback is that these items do not appear in the main auction search listing, however there are ways to get around this and as a bonus shop/store listings actually get crawled by the search engines.

To illustrate the example:

1000 regular listed items cost $200/£150 for 10 days, whereas for the same money in an ebay store/shop you can actually get 10,000/5000 items listed for a month. That alone should convince you of their worth, sure makes the $15.95/£6.00 monthly fee worthwhile.

“Well no one will see the items I am listing if they don't appear in the search listings, therefore I am wasting my money”

This is the typical response to what I have just said above. I actually agree with this statement if all you do is list them in your Ebay store/shop and do nothing else to get them noticed, whereas a simply solution is to use what the brick and mortar stores have been doing for years and employ loss leader tactics. What you want to do is list a product from your range that is popular as a standard auction ie. not within your Ebay store/shop and aim to sell it at a small loss or hopefully cost, this auction will be the teaser for the viewer and a simple line of text in your listing that states “Please visit our Ebay Shop for other great deals” (within Ebays TOS) can direct them to your Ebay store/shop and start the traffic building.

The key is then to ensure that you lock these viewers into your Ebay shop, once they are locked into your products/services that your Ebay store/shop offers then they will come directly to your shop to see what's what first meaning that you can take advantage of a lower listing fee and still get the views/sales.

Put simply then, I recommend an Ebay store/shop to anyone that is serious about developing Ebay into a business opportunity, the two reasons above should be enough to make you recognise the power that they have but just in case I have put together a few more Ebay store/shop tips to help you develop your ebay business..

1. Assign a unique domain name to your Ebay store/shop, this can then be cross linked from your own web site to increase search engine awareness and develop traffic to BOTH sites.

2. Make sure that your Ebay store/shop matches the look of your own web site, after all you are trying to establish yourself as a brand and a brand image is very important when selling any product.

3. Ensure your ebay store/shop utilises the keywords that you are targeting, this will allow the search engines to rank you for the terms you are looking to be ranked for. After all good search engine ranking can seriously drive traffic numbers.

4. Use keyword navigation categories, what I mean by this is that you should utilise the keywords that your web site is targeting as your Ebay store/shop categories. Obviously make it user friendly as well and utilise your full allowance of categories to increase your keyword densities.

5. Always link to your Ebay store/shop from other sites such as forums and other related web sites that you may have, why not consider running an advertising campaign using pay-per-click techniques to drive traffic to your Ebay store/shop.

Points three, four and five are very important because by sending traffic from outside Ebay to your Ebay store/shop can actually reduce your Final Value Fees(FVF)! This reduction is not small either because the US site reduces your FVF's by 75%, this is only applicable to the US site at the time of writing although most US options filter through to the UK site pretty quickly.

Lastly like running your own web site, always monitor your stats. Your shop has a good stats package and it is vital that you use this to monitor where your traffic is coming from so that you can maximise the effort of targeting this source, this information alone will help you too greatly increase your Ebay store/shop sales and make you more money.

Ebay Linking - What are you allowed to do?

Posted on Jun 25, 2006 at 03:15 PM by Michael Ralph | Comments (1)

More and more people are realising that Ebay is not only a marketplace to sell and buy products but also an extremely valuable source of traffic to your own website, the thing is like any business entity Ebay realises this and has various measures in place to prevent an abuse of this.

The purpose of this article is to clear up what you can and cannot do, thus staying within Ebays own guidelines and keeping your account intact. So what does Ebay consider to be a link:

A link is any mechanism used to take you off the eBay site, whether static or clickable. This applies to any format used for a link that includes, but is not limited to, text, images, logos or icons.

When designing your auction listing you need to be aware that Ebay policy allows your listing to contain,

"...text descriptions, graphics, pictures and other content relevant to the sale of that item."

What this means is that the listing must be solely for the purpose of selling the item, and not for general business advertisements. Now reading this you would think that they have completely closed the door but they have in fact still left you with plenty of options, what you need to realise that these cannot be direct solicitations to sell outside of the Ebay marketplace. So what exactly can you link to from your auction listings, well you are allowed to:

Link to a page that further describes the product for sale, that page may contain links to other pages that offer items for sale outside of eBay. This is permitted, provided the intent of the link is to further describe your item. If you have a logo for any of these links, it may be no greater than 88x33 pixels and it may not flash or otherwise move.

So provide a detailed description of the product and also include your standard menu bar, this not only makes your page part of your sites look and feel but also presents the reader the opportunity to click around and you are also not enticing people to do so.

You are allowed to place one link, and one link only, to your email address so bidders can ask for extra information. Your email address may be a link that opens an email client or web form (no links are permitted off of the web form however). This link must only provide a contact service, making the link direct to sales pages or product offers is in conflict with Ebay policy.

So provide an email contact address that is related to your website, ie. is specific to your domain name. Most internet users are savvy enough to realise that this address is linked to a website and will take a look if they are curious enough.

You are also allowed to link to pages that contain further pictures of the item for sale, these photo pages may also contain “discrete” links to other pages that offer items for sale outside the eBay online marketplace, but may not contain descriptions of or links to specific items on other sites.

So make sure the page fits in with your website and has your usual menus in place and people will take the opportunity to look around your site, DO NOT place descriptions or enticing strap lines to encourage the clicking away from Ebay. You will find that this is not needed and you will generate hits/visitors anyway. Also bear in mind that this page is allowed to have images of other items that you have for sale on Ebay so use it to highlight your offer and also increase traffic to your other auctions on Ebay.

You are also allowed to watermark your images with the address of your website, this is because the images are yours and as such you own the copyright. If they are not your images and are generic images that you don't have copyright to then you are not allowed to firstly use them and secondly watermark them as your own.

You are allowed to link to your Ebay Shop, other items you have for sale on Ebay and your About Me Page. Your About Me Page is a key means to help develop traffic to your own site and further details of this are discussed at another of my articles about driving Ebay Traffic from your About Me page to your website.

You are allowed to provide credit to any third part solutions and services that you use to help you generate your listing, for example if you use any of the Free Ebay Templates that we provide then you are allowed to leave in the link acknowledgement that is within the HTML already. The key to this remaining within Ebay policy is that the credit must be:

• No more than 10 words of text (HTML font size 3)

• A logo (88 x 33 pixels)

Importantly it can also only be one of these and not both and must also conform to the below:

• The credit may not contain promotional material about additional services or other information about the company. It should only identify the service provided by the company.

• The credit may link only to the third-party company's website containing information about the eBay service.

• The service being credited should only be one that the seller is using within that particular listing.

• If an image hosting service is used, sellers may display a credit for the image hosting service provider.

A lot of sellers are starting to use links to pages away from Ebay that detail the terms and conditions of the sale, firstly it is Ebay policy to have these within the listing itself but any such pages that are linked to CANNOT include ANY links to pages outside of the Ebay Marketplace. The simple solution is just to list these in the listing itself and not run the risk of breaking policy.

All the above should maximise the traffic opportunities that Ebay can provide, you must also exercise restraint when using them as going overboard and linking every other sentence for example will be deemed as soliciting off Ebay sales even if the links are allowed in Ebay policy. One of two per listing is more than enough.

Dropshipping and Ebay - Why are you not doing it?

Posted on Jun 20, 2006 at 06:56 AM by Michael Ralph | Comments (1)

One of the most difficult things to do when looking to start an online business is to find that elusive supplier that will supply you, put simply you need a source of real products to sell. Drop shipping is a perfect way to achieve this and lets you develop the perfect online business.

The perfect online business is one in which you are selling a product whereby you DO NOT HAVE ANY STOCK and you DO NOT PHYSICALLY HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE PRODUCT and all you do is COLLECT THE MONEY AND PASS THE CUSTOMERS DETAILS ON.

THIS IS DROP SHIPPING AND ANYONE CAN DO IT!

Read the following example :

You decide that you want to sell Mobile Phones, you then realise that to do this the traditional way you would have to hold a large amount of stock so that you have the range and product available for your customers. Without a massive amount of working capital you have no chance, also by the time you get your business noticed the lines you are carrying are out of date and not worth what you paid for them.

However, now consider this:

You sign up to a Mobile Phone drop shipper, they give you a list of products that they can supply. You now go away and advertise this list on your online store. You take an order from your web site for a Motorola phone, you have this advertised at $200.. You then collect the customers details via your web site, all good shopping cart software provides this feature, and then contact your drop shipper and buy the same phone for $150 and pass them your customers details. That is the end of the sales process for you, what happens next is :

The drop shipper SENDS THE PRODUCT TO YOUR CUSTOMER and usually it goes under plain packaging or some drop shippers can also put YOUR COMPANY DETAILS on the packaging when they send it to your customer.

That's $50 PROFIT for VERY LITTLE WORK!

Just 10 orders a week will give you $500 profit.

Drop shipping is fast becoming the easiest way of starting your own online business because it offers a very simple formula for success. The drop shipper sets the price that you pay, you then set the price that your customers pay and the difference between the two is your profit!

SIMPLE ISNT IT.

Because it is that simple a lot of people are jumping on the drop shipping band wagon and it is not unusual to see lots of different web sites using the same pictures and sales copy to sell the same product, usually because they just simply publish the promotional materials that the drop shippers provide for them.

It is important at this stage to remember that the internet was based upon the ability to share information and content. It is this simple word, CONTENT, that will help you to distinguish yourself from the rest and will also ensure that your search engine rankings are developed to increase the traffic (ie. customers) to your web site

This is simply using information and content to ADD VALUE to your web site, customers want to be able to learn about the product before they purchase and having content specific to your area will allow this distinction in the mind of the customer. In order to make a success of your online business you have to make your customers want to come back. Think of your favourite web sites, why do you keep revisiting them? Simple, because they provide you with something that is of VALUE to you.

Drop shipping allows you to develop your business in this manner because instead of worrying about stock levels and shipping you get to focus on listening to the market and discovering the products your visitors want - and then being able to rapidly add them to your site.

Its CONTENT SPECIFIC TO A WANT.

Drop Shipping is EASY - Have I said that?

BUT, don't get carried away. When you see the products that the drop shippers offer you simply think I can sell that, that, that and that and before long your list of things that you want to sell is massive and this is counter productive. In order to make drop shipping successful for you I would suggest to

FOCUS ON ONE PRODUCT AT A TIME

Build this up, when this is established then it gives you the ability to go into other areas a lot easier and your current customer base will give you a good source of potential new customers straight away. A great way is to focus onto a product that you like, know a lot about or use personally in a hobby etc. This gives you the opportunity to develop your web site as an authority on the subject and as such ADD VALUE.

Like any business venture there are some points that should be raised before you build your online empire the easy drop shipping way :

Don't just use the first drop shipper you come across as they may not give you the best deal on this particular product. Like all things shop around a number of drop shippers to find the one most suitable to your needs.

Some drop shippers operate a handling fee over and above shipping costs, this is usually quite a reasonable fee and needs to be factored into your pricing structure.

Some drop shippers try to charge you a monthly 'members' fee as another means to make money from you, in my opinion these should be avoided as the only time you should have to pay a dropshipper is in connection with a specific order. You will find that the majority that charge a members fee are the ones that offer no true value to your business anyway.

As with any developing business the question of credibility is key, unfortunately there are a number of con artists out there that are aiming to take your money for nothing in return. A key phrase to remember is :

IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE - IT IS!

Research is key, for example :

How long have the drop shippers been in business? Do they respond to your information requests quickly and professionally? Do they offer buying accounts? What payments do they accept? (if just Western Union run a mile)

This list is endless, that is why I only recommend two other sources of drop shippers information. Both these lists are maintained by professionals that constantly update their lists and only recommend the best, most reliable and trustworthy dropshippers.

As you can imagine the idea of drop shipping fits in with online auctions, in particular eBay, perfectly as eBay will provide you with the traffic and all you have to do is make that ad stand out from the rest (my FREE resources on my site will help you) and all the rest of the work is done for you.

You just concentrate on developing your business and using ebays traffic to make money and you cannot lose.

If you have no idea what drop shipping is. Here's a simple explanation of how drop shipping works:

* A drop ship distributor is a wholesale company that will ship one product at a
time directly to your customer.
* You don't need to pay for an item unless it is sold.
* You don't store any inventory.
* You don't package and ship merchandise.
* You simply place an ad on eBay, Yahoo Auction or your website then take
order.
* Your customer pays you for the product and you pay the cost of the product to the drop ship company. The difference is your profit.

Ebay Successful Tips

EBay is a worldwide web site. Generally people sell on EBay to supplement their income, liquidate an estate, to rid of unwanted items from their collections, or use it in lieu of a yard sale to sell things that they no longer want or need. Becoming even more common are those sellers who purchase new products at wholesale prices and re-sell them on EBay for a profit. You don't have to sell full-time on EBay though. You can sell as many or as few items as you want. It's a great money making hobby. Keep your day job and sell on EBay in the evenings and on the weekends.

It’s a heady feeling when you win your first eBay auction: a mixture of happiness and perhaps just a little fear. After all, there seems to be so much to do before you can actually get your item. What do you do next?

The simple answer is: you send payment to the seller, as quickly as possible. The quicker you pay, the more your seller will like you, and the sooner your item will arrive. But how you go about it? That all depends on how you plan to pay.

When and How to Withdraw Your eBay Bid (and Why You Might Not Want To)

Posted on Apr 24, 2006 at 10:55 AM by Johnson | Comments (0)

eBay are a little strict about letting you withdraw your bid. They call it a ‘bid retraction’, and have a stringent set of conditions that you must meet before you are allowed to do it. Here are eBay’s three acceptable reasons for withdrawing a bid.

You made a typographical error: This means that you accidentally typed the wrong amount into the bid box, bidding a far higher price than you meant to. This can be scary: imagine bidding $100 and accidentally adding an extra ‘0’! You are entirely allowed to withdraw your bid in this situation, and bid again if you want to.

When you buy something from an eBay seller, you are giving them your money and hoping that you will get something in return. However many guarantees of safety eBay might make to you, nothing is certain: if you just give your money to scammers all the time without doing any checks then the chances are you won’t get all of that money back.

That’s why you should always check the seller’s reputation, or ‘feedback rating’. This is a quick and easy-to-read summary of their history as an eBay seller, which gives you some idea of whether or not you should trust them with your money. Design Tips for eBay Templates

Posted on Feb 19, 2006 at 11:38 AM by Cedrick Reese | Comments (0)

Templates are the design elements that you might have noticed some sellers using on their auctions, like the borders around the edge, and the different fonts. Many sellers who are new to eBay don’t bother using them, and you might not have either – generally, a descriptive listing and a good picture will do the job just fine.

If you want to really finish your auctions off and make a really good impression on your buyers though, it’s useful to have a good template. Here are a few tips on what to do and what not to do.

If you?ve ever read an article about eBay, you will have seen the kinds of incomes people make ? it isn?t unusual to hear of people making thousands of dollars per month on eBay. Next time you?re on eBay, take a look at how many PowerSellers there are: you?ll find quite a few.
