Credit Card Abuse: Like Your Balance, it Keeps Going On, and on, and...
Posted on Feb 27, 2008 at 05:45 PM by therandywriter
It's hardly surprising that credit card defaults have risen 30 percent, given the challenges consumers face simply navigating the minefield of fees, penalties and other questionable practices amounting to credit card abuse.
In a society increasingly moving away from cash, credit card companies have been earning a justified reputation for taking advantage of an era where credit is treated with somewhat of a laissez-faire attitude, as opposed to the respect and caution with which we used to approach credit card debt not that long ago.

Have You Had Enough Credit Card Debt?

There is something strange about what happens to all of us psychologically when we see our credit card debt just keep climbing and climbing with no end in sight. For some reason, our emotional reaction is often one of ambivalence or even acceptance as though having a mountain of debt to credit card companies is a part of life and no big deal.
But it is a big deal. When a huge portion of your monthly budget goes to servicing debt, it's a big deal because that money could be going toward a better house, a new car or even just for something fun for you or your family. Whatever it might buy is a lot better than it just being thrown away as interest on a ridiculously high credit mountain.

Do you suffer from credit card abuse?

As much as consumers are beholden to their credit cards, with an abundance of credit card debt and conditioned towards monthly payments, dependence isn't enough; it appears as though credit card companies won't rest until consumers are completely held hostage by credit card abuse.
There's no other way to describe some of the unjust, unfair, unethical and unwarranted fees and penalties levied against well-meaning and responsible consumers. How else could one describe some of the outrageous practices credit card companies try to pass off as good business?

Have there been unwanted MasterCards in your mailbox?
Posted on Feb 20, 2008 at 07:39 AM by therandywriter

Citibank and CitiGroup has come under increasing fire by disgruntled consumers upset with the sudden appearance of a Citi MasterCard in their mailbox. While banks and credit institutions do not have the legal right or authority to foist credit cards on consumers without prior consent, a massive grab by Citibank into a pool of 3.5 million inactive Macy's account holders resulted in unwanted Citi cards.
Here's what happened. CitiGroup purchased the credit accounts of retail stalwart Macy's in 2006, and invited active account holders to switch from their Macy's card--which can be used only at Macy's, obviously--to the new Citi MasterCard. Unlike the Macy's card, the Citi credit card can be used anywhere.

Credit Card Management

When the economy or personal issues and problems result in a high credit card debt, we often find our debt spread over three or four or more cards. So you may have a Visa, several MasterCards, a Discover card and a Capital One card and maybe many more each carrying several thousands of dollars of debt. The result is an ugly parade of bills from each company each needing a minimum payment that pays the interest and takes just a small amount off of your debt.

Much has been written about the recent switch to Citibank Mastercards from Macy's Department store cards, which many believe is not only morally reprehensible on a number of fronts, but could also negatively impact an individual's credit score.
Citibank defends the practice as being perfectly legal, and at least one Citibank insider agrees that while no laws were broken in her view, the methodology used by Citibank was somewhat suspect, if not 'dumb.'
Several questions remain.

Pre-paid Credit Cards repairs bad credit

If you are having difficulty with your credit score and rating, or having a hard time getting a credit card you might want to consider a pre-paid card. Nowadays it is virtually impossible to purchase anything without a credit card. Lenders today are offering Pre-Paid Visa and Master Cards, which work like credit cards. The procedure works like put money into an account and then you are able to use the cards like a regular credit card. No one will know the difference. Prepaid credit cards can be purchased at many stores or online. The downside is you have to pay a small fee when you open an account. You want to be careful with which card you choose since some are expensive. After the account is open, you have to pay a small fee every time you make another deposit on your account. The upside about prepaid cards is that it can help repair your credit. Another advantage is, if your credit is bad then the prepaid may be the only the solution for repairing credit. The best solution is to continue paying your bills and avoid spending money on items you do not really need. Most people spend a fortune during the course of a decade on various items all to sell them later in a garage sale, or else toss them in the garbage when they realize they did not need it in the first place. It pays to consider all aspects of any decision made to avoid complications. Bad credit is an obstacle and in order to defeat the obstacle you have to take steps to resolve the issues.

Good question. Credit cards can be both good and bad it all depends on how you use them.
For those who like the idea of borrowing thousands of dollars each month without interest (when you pay your credit card balance in full each month) then using a credit card is ideal.
Remember credit card companies only charge you interest when your balance is not paid in full when the bill is due. Just think about the advantages of borrowing thousands of dollars for a period of between 30 to 60 days and having it cost you nothing. Granted, credit cards offer the cheapest form of credit but there are pitfalls.

You wait for the mail carrier, hoping to receive a letter that says; “Guaranteed credit card approval” arrives. In contrast, you do not have to linger around if you own a computer and have access to the Internet. Just sign online and type in keywords that are relative to credit cards you are searching for and you will find a list of cards online. If you have become aware of some of the credit card offers, which include low introductory rates with cash back or points, then you know that some cards offer more than other cards. Credit cards are similar to borrowing cash. If you apply for a credit card at your local bank the representative will request you to fill out an application and then sign a series of papers. Similar to applying for a loan, credit cards applications take about two weeks to hear an answer. You will take delivery of a letter in the mail typically because most lenders don’t care to provide you an answer over the phone.

When it comes to everyday purchases most of us pull out our bank debit card first. But is using your debit card actually better than using you credit card?
I think so. Let me explain. First of all, there's no getting away from the fact that debit cards are convenient. They are easy to use and are cheaper than writing a cheque. (Besides who writes cheques anymore?) Plus, you don't have the hassle of making sure you have an adequate amount of cash on you for whatever it is you wish to buy. That said, you're also taking money right out of your bank account and putting it into someone elses.
