According to the latest data, there is a constant growth in the demand for mechanical and quartz watches, especially the ones produced by the prestigious Swiss Watchmaking companies. However, some of watch owners, especially in North America face the problem of the shortage of well-qualified watchmakers.
However, in the recent years the situation has been considerably changed for the better by improved curriculums introduced in American schools of watch-making and an approved certification system. There has been also organized a special campaign aimed at informing potential students of the existing career opportunities and wage benefits.
What are the main factors creating the need for highly-qualified watchmakers? First of all, there is naturally the need for standardized certification system. It should be mentioned that watchmakers learn their trade due to a wide range of experiences. One of the recently conducted surveys proved that just 35 percent of the watchmakers responding gained their training at a formal school of watch-making.
The other types of widely spread training include on-job training, studying trough apprenticeship or some repair training courses, and even self-teaching. Consequently, rather a small number of the practicing watchmakers have been certified as master watchmakers.
The AWA (American Watch Association) as well as its member watch-making companies do everything possible to make available the high-quality watch-making curricula, for example the one based upon the Swiss WOSTEP program, at the main US watch-making schools. The AWA also supports the uniform standards for watchmakers' certification process necessary to provide truly quality service for watch consumers looking for professional service and repair.
There is one more factor to be considered - aging workforce. It is unavoidable that in the following 10-20 years, almost one-half of the watchmaker workforces will retire or pass away.
As a result, with more and more owners of complicated watches, and an elderly generation of watchmakers close to retirement, today there is a great need for highly qualified watchmakers. Therefore, young people who are meditating over the best career opportunities should consider the sphere of watch-making, especially if they find out that watchmakers are supposed to earn attractive wages ( the middle annual earnings of a watchmaker make up about $42,500, with the highest ones reaching more than $100,000).
It is no longer true that watch-making is a declining realm of the past - just the opposite. That is why the conclusion is absolutely clear - the need for highly qualified certified watchmakers is going to continue to grow for years to come.
